Background / History

Xu Tong escaped from a psychiatric hospital after impersonating a doctor and successfully performing an emergency operation. Soon afterward, he took a black invitation card from a motorcyclist killed in front of him; the card led him to the Script Murder Experience Hall. 1

His first Script World placed him in an isolated mountain village filled with straw-bodied figures and Paper Dolls. He worked with Li Bo when necessary, identified the village’s anomalies, killed one of its cooks, and ultimately defeated the Paper Doll Zhou Yu by dragging her into a water vat. 6 7 12 Rather than simply leave, Xu Tong negotiated with Old Man Li: he would help save Zhong Nan’s soul if every imprisoned wandering soul was released first. 13

After returning to reality, Xu Tong forced Li Bo to surrender the Ghost-Charming Bell and half of his gold bars. He then used the proceeds to alter his appearance and evade attention from the police. 15 16

Xu Tong inherited the Paper Craftsman Manual from Old Man Li and sought out Old Man Song to improve his craft. After persistently persuading him, he became Song’s tacit apprentice and was given a place to live beside the old craftsman’s home. 17 19 20

During the Black Forest Hill Script World, Xu Tong posed as a timid newcomer while infiltrating Yang Zixuan’s Jieren Crowd team. He exploited Zhang Hu’s greed, obtained stronger prop cards, betrayed and killed Zhang Hu, then formed a pragmatic alliance with Yang Guanjin and Mad Dog. 28 33 35 Later captured by Huo Ying’s Miao forces, he entered the Ascension Bureau as a coerced pathfinder and became separated from the others with Captain Wang. 42 46

Appearance

Xu Tong is first seen wearing a white lab coat and surgical mask while posing as a doctor. He is described as having slender fingers, and later deliberately rebuilds his public image through expensive clothing after escaping the hospital. 1 16

Personality

Xu Tong is observant, theatrical, and intensely curious. He notices artificial behavior in the Experience Hall receptionist, studies clues others ignore, and treats deception as a performance to be judged. Even while Zhong Nan threatens Li Bo, Xu Tong critiques Zhong Nan’s portrayal of a victim rather than reacting with visible fear. 2 11 12

He is ruthless when survival or profit is involved. Xu Tong kills enemies without hesitation, intimidates Li Bo into surrendering valuable items, and betrays Zhang Hu immediately after receiving Script Points and prop cards from him. 6 15 33 He also uses an intentionally timid persona to make experienced players underestimate him. 28 34

Despite this cruelty, Xu Tong is capable of calculated compassion. He insists that Old Man Li release the wandering souls before receiving help, stitches Mad Dog’s life-threatening wound, and repeatedly protects Captain Wang during the descent into the Spirit Gu King Tomb. 13 25 48 50 His help is rarely selfless: he prefers capable allies and openly evaluates people by their usefulness. 15 34 36
