Background / History
Early Life and Career
Orochimaru graduated from the Ninja Academy at six and studied under Sarutobi Hiruzen alongside Jiraiya and Tsunade. The three fought Hanzo together and received his acknowledgment as formidable shinobi 299 281.
His fascination with immortality began in childhood. After he found a snakeskin, Hiruzen told him that snakes represented immortality and good fortune. Hiruzen later attributed Orochimaru’s distorted fear of death to the loss of his parents 235.
Orochimaru became a decorated veteran and frontline commander. After Hatake Sakumo’s suicide, Konoha’s leadership chose to promote Orochimaru as a new public benchmark, redirecting attention from Sakumo’s death. Despite his pride in his contributions, he resented the village’s treatment of him 7 43.
Alliance with Uchiha Kei
Orochimaru’s early standoff with Uchiha Kei ends when Kei initiates conversation and praises him. This earns his goodwill. During the same encounter, Uchiha Fugaku asks whether Orochimaru will accept Itachi as a disciple, but receives no commitment 7.
Kei later recruits him by exploiting Hotaru’s natural affinity for snakes. Orochimaru experiences involuntary affection toward her, and Kei explains why. After recognizing the mechanism and Kei’s strategy, Orochimaru agrees to join his side and take Hotaru as his disciple 43.
Kei’s principal objective is Orochimaru’s Cursed Seal research, which he regards as a weakened form of Sage Mode. Learning that Orochimaru has begun experimenting on Anko prompts this interest. Orochimaru offers his accumulated ninjutsu knowledge and experience, but Kei presses for practical benefits, particularly sealing charms 44.
During the confrontation between Konoha and the Uchiha clan, Orochimaru becomes a sought-after intermediary because of his connections to both camps. The attention from competing clans irritates him. Jiraiya returns and invites him to a memorial service for the Second Great Ninja War 64.
Departure from Konoha
After the Third Hokage’s death, Orochimaru expresses disappointment that Kei could not give his former teacher a dignified end, while acknowledging Kei’s circumstances. Disillusioned with Konoha’s decay and the disrespect he has received, he announces his intention to leave 113.
The new female Daimyo of the Land of Fields invites him to establish a ninja village. When Kei questions his reasons for going, Orochimaru explains that the young Daimyo is the daughter of his friend, the previous ruler, and that he should look after her. He leaves a box behind before departing; the conversation also hints at his resurrection research 113 114.
Retrospective Shinobi History
Later historical and analytical chapters discuss a separate sequence of familiar shinobi events.
| Period / Event | Orochimaru’s involvement |
|---|---|
| Konoha Year 57 | His forbidden experiments are exposed. He escapes with Yamato’s assistance, begins building a village, and performs his first reincarnation 174. |
| Konoha Year 58 | Attempts to seize Pain’s Rinnegan, fails, and joins Akatsuki 174. |
| Konoha Year 61 | Fights Itachi and leaves Akatsuki. The account adopts this corrected date rather than an earlier, conflicting chronology 409 413. |
| Otogakure’s establishment | Founds the Hidden Sound Village in the Land of Fields 208. |
| Konoha Crush | Allies with Sunagakure, isolates Hiruzen inside the Sound Four’s barrier, and reanimates the First and Second Hokage. Hiruzen dies, while Orochimaru loses the use of his arms 219 281 331. |
| Defeat by Sasuke | Sasuke attacks his deteriorating body, defeats him inside the reincarnation ritual’s mental space, and absorbs his White Snake power 226. |
| Sealing by Itachi | Emerges when Sasuke’s chakra is exhausted, only to be sealed by the Totsuka Blade. An escaping white snake is destroyed by Amaterasu 235 387. |
| Fourth Shinobi World War | Returns through Anko’s seal, reanimates the Hokage, and helps the Five Kage 235 222 338. |
Appearance
- Serpentine eyes: His eyes are described as increasingly snake-like during his encounter with Kei 7.
- Pliable body: Modifications allow his body to become unusually soft and flexible 303.
- White Snake form: Can transform into a giant serpent covered in white scales 303.
- Signature rope outfit: Retrospective commentary traces his shimenawa-rope clothing to a Kusagakure disguise taken during the Chunin Exams. After changing the trousers, he retains the style, which the Sound Four also adopt 384.
Personality
Orochimaru pursues knowledge, perfection, and immortality without accepting ordinary ethical limits. Human experimentation, child trafficking, killing his teacher, and instigating war are described as means to his ambitions rather than acts committed for the pleasure of killing 235.
His recruitment combines personal attention with intimidation. He identifies what vulnerable people need—stability for Kimimaro, power for Sasuke, and parental care for Kabuto—and offers it while fostering dependence. Secrecy about his organization’s size and resources further discourages rebellion 402.
His later cooperation with Sasuke is explicitly framed as a change in outlook, not moral redemption. Sasuke’s rapid growth, Kabuto’s defeat despite extensive enhancements, and Itachi’s understanding of life and death force him to recognize his limitations. He then chooses to cultivate Sasuke as the “wind” capable of changing the shinobi world 235.

Interpretations in Later Commentary
- Revolutionary scientist: Chapters 402 and 403 interpret his research as an attempt to break hereditary monopolies on power through reproducible enhancements and widespread instruction 402 403.
- Sharingan as a political tool: Chapter 403 argues that he wants its copying ability to acquire and distribute clan secret techniques, rather than pursuing only its strongest ocular attacks 403.
- Hashirama’s ideological successor: The same commentary compares their opposition to clan exclusivity, while distinguishing Hashirama’s unification from Orochimaru’s coercive experimentation 402 403.
- Sound Four as anti-Itachi preparation: Later analyses interpret their chakra absorption, sound-based genjutsu, battlefield control, and specially chosen summons as deliberate counters to Itachi 421 422.
