Background / History
Yamcha once survived as a bandit in the Diablo Desert, robbing travelers. After meeting Son Goku and becoming Bulma's boyfriend, he abandoned banditry and turned over a new leaf. He is also the creator of the Wolf Fang Fist 13.
He enters the 21st World Martial Arts Tournament convinced that Son Goku is his sole serious rival and that they will meet in the finals. His confidence collapses when he draws Li Shu in the first preliminary match instead 17.
Personality
Yamcha is highly confident in his martial arts and initially dismisses Li Shu as an obstacle beneath his notice. His focus on defeating Goku leaves him unprepared for Li Shu's far greater speed and power 17 18.
Despite the humiliation of a first-round loss, he accepts defeat sincerely and immediately resolves to surpass Li Shu. He studies Li Shu's subsequent fights, develops a plan to counter the side kick that defeated him, and demands a rematch 19. However, he is easily persuaded that Li Shu's strength came from Super Holy Water and departs for Korin Tower seeking it 20.
