Background & History

Li Shu arrived in the Dragon Ball world with an Undying Body and instantly acquired Japanese language proficiency. He intentionally starved himself nearly to death to test the achievement system, earning Ki Sense in the process. Soon afterward, Son Gohan found him on Mount Paozu; Li Shu claimed to be an orphan and was taken into Gohan’s home alongside Son Goku. He disclosed that he was a Saiyan and offered to teach Goku how to retain his sanity during Great Ape transformations. 2

He spent five years on Mount Paozu, sparring with Goku while avoiding especially painful training. After Son Gohan’s death, Li Shu comforted Goku through his grief. Goku eventually learned to control his Great Ape state while retaining his mind. 4

Seeking system rewards and Senzu Beans, Li Shu followed Korin to Korin Tower. He defeated Bora respectfully, flew to the tower’s summit, and received a Beginner Senzu Bean Can and Dimensional Storage Space. He repeatedly challenged Korin for the Super Holy Water, ultimately distracting the cat guardian with yarn; drinking the water earned him a Dojutsu draw and Battle Eye. The pain of awakening Battle Eye left him unconscious for more than a month, causing him to miss Shenron’s summoning. 7 8

Personality

Li Shu is calculating, opportunistic, and highly conscious of system mechanics. He deliberately engineers situations that may trigger achievements, upgrades useful items through risky probability-based attempts, and studies the conditions behind hidden missions. His desire for strength often takes the form of efficient preparation rather than conventional discipline. 2 15 34 47

He is intensely afraid of pain, a weakness made worse by the hundredfold pain sensitivity imposed by his Undying Body. He avoids unnecessary suffering, relies on Senzu Beans and painkillers when possible, and seeks Pain Immunity through the Dragon Balls. Even so, he can remain conscious and fight through extreme pain when cornered. 26 29 32 33

Li Shu can be courteous in formal combat, as shown in his fight with Bora and his treatment of Yamcha after defeating him. However, his pursuit of achievement progress also leads him to intimidation, torture, and vigilante punishments against criminals and Red Ribbon Army soldiers; these methods disturb Goku. 7 18 38 40 45

Abilities & Skills

Undying Body

Li Shu’s core survival ability prevents death and restores catastrophic bodily damage.

  • Could not die even after intentionally starving himself nearly to death. 2
  • Survived being bisected by Colonel Silver’s sword; his body restored itself without visible blood loss. 37
  • Does not remove pain; instead, it causes him to experience pain at roughly one hundred times normal intensity. 32
  • Does not prevent stamina depletion, particularly while using Super Saiyan Form. 50

Saiyan Physiology

As a Saiyan, Li Shu possesses a tail, grows stronger through battle, and can access transformation-based power increases.

  • Retains memories and reason while transformed into a Great Ape, unlike Goku’s earlier loss of control. 2 4
  • His combat power rose from 78.75 to 99 after the final battle with Goku. 26 31
  • Saiyan Bloodline Lv. 1 increased his Great Ape multiplier to twelvefold, allowing him to reach combat power 945. 24 30
  • His Super Saiyan Form increases combat power by 50 times, but it drains his stamina rapidly. 32 50

Battle Eye

A Dojutsu obtained after drinking Korin’s Super Holy Water.

  • Displays numerical combat power above other beings. 9
  • Allowed Li Shu to compare himself with Master Roshi, Goku, Krillin, Yamcha, and other opponents. 10 12 17
  • Upgraded to Battle Eye Lv. 1 before the World Martial Arts Tournament. 17
  • Later enabled him to see his own combat power without a reflective surface. 30

Battle Nose

A danger-sensing Nose Technique acquired through a lottery.

  • Detects dangerous intent and identifies the direction and proximity of an incoming threat. 21
  • Allowed Li Shu to react to Master Roshi’s attack from above and evade his Afterimage Technique. 21
  • Helped him detect the Red Ribbon Army’s ambush around Muscle Tower. 44

Ki Sense and Flight Technique

Li Shu gained Ki Sense through his starvation achievement and developed flight from it.

  • Mastered the Flight Technique before visiting Korin Tower. 5 7
  • Initially withheld flight training from Goku to avoid changing the expected course of events. 5
  • Later taught Goku to fly and demonstrated a standing flight posture. 33 34
  • Can sense unfamiliar ki signatures, including concealed enemies. 48

  • Afterimage Technique — Learned from Son Gohan and recognized as a technique that disrupts an opponent’s judgment. 21
  • Tail Whip — Used his Saiyan tail to strike Goku and escape a painful restraint. 29

Kun Fist

An unconventional technique that overwhelms targets with an aura of extreme awkwardness.

  • Begins with conspicuous basketball-like dribbling motions. 25
  • Emits an “Awkward” fist intent that disrupts opponents’ movements and concentration. 25
  • Incapacitated Krillin so thoroughly that he lost the ability to continue fighting. 25
  • Made Li Shu a crowd favorite among female spectators, though he relies on Thick Skin to endure the embarrassment. 25 27

Moon Creation Technique

A technique obtained after winning the 21st World Martial Arts Tournament.

  • Creates a moon, allowing Li Shu to trigger Great Ape transformation without waiting for a natural full moon. 32
  • Carries the practical drawback of destroying his clothing during transformation. 32

Achievement System

Li Shu receives quests, check-in rewards, lottery chances, and upgrade opportunities through an internal system.

  • Achievement Points can upgrade skills, bloodline traits, consumables, and equipment, although upgrades can fail despite stated high success rates. 10 15 16
  • He discovered hidden achievements may be triggered by altering established events or interacting with non-original figures. 34
  • He later concluded that strong emotions can help trigger achievement missions. 36 47
  • His long-term “Punish the Evil and Promote the Good” mission requires 300 resolved incidents and offers the Great Hero title plus 5,000 Achievement Points. 39 41
