"The car was borrowed."
"What did you borrow a taxi for?" Jonathan glared at him and said angrily, "Do you know how many deliveries I've had to make myself every day since you left?"
To be fair, Jonathan's little shop was in a remote location and barely got any customers. No one was willing to work as a delivery driver there, except William, of course.
William thought, You'll have plenty more chances to make deliveries yourself in the future. But he said, "Boss, look, I'm back from vacation. I promise I'll work hard from now on!"
Jonathan rolled his eyes. "I don't believe a word you say. If you take another vacation this long, I really will have to fire you!"
"Sure, sure." William nodded like a pecking chicken, thinking, Go ahead and fire me if you've got the guts. It's all just cover for my identity anyway. I don't care whether I'm a delivery driver, a courier, or a barber.
Jonathan led William into the restaurant. To his surprise, business had been good lately, and there were lots of customers. The only waiter was swamped.
"Business is good today!" William remarked.
"Of course. You should see who owns this restaurant." Jonathan said proudly. "You came at just the right time. We've got someone coming in for an interview as a new waiter."
"A new waiter?" William looked incredulous, thinking, Who'd be dumb enough to work as a waiter in this dump?
Jonathan continued, "William, you've been with our restaurant for a while. Would you be willing to interview this person?"
William frowned. What was there to interview a restaurant waiter about? As long as they could carry plates, that was enough.
Seeing how reluctant William looked, Jonathan smiled mysteriously. "The applicant this time is a woman."
So what if
