Yan is a young Spirit Hall core disciple who trains alongside Xie Yue in the Golden Hall's Grade-A cultivation area. He wears the red-and-gold robes of a core disciple. 7

Personality

Yan is proud, competitive, and highly sensitive to perceived slights. Su Ming's special treatment, rapid growth, and Hu Liena's attention provoke his resentment almost immediately; he regards Su Ming as arrogant and questions his place among Spirit Hall's elite. 8 20

He is persistent in pursuing a partnership with Hu Liena, continuing to press the issue even after she rejects him in favor of Su Ming. His confidence repeatedly turns into frustration when Su Ming proves stronger than expected. 20 24 25

Despite being warned about Su Ming's Great Soul Arena record, Yan enters the internal selection match intending to settle their rivalry. His defeat leaves him despairing and unwilling to accept the gap between them. 29 30 32

Defensive Soul Skill

Yan can maintain granite lava armor as a defensive measure in combat. Su Ming's Nine-Nether Resentful Phoenix Cry forces the armor to disintegrate after suppressing Yan's martial soul and extinguishing his first four soul rings. 30

Story Role / Major Arcs

Golden Hall newcomer

Yan meets Su Ming when Hu Liena brings the newly arrived disciple to the Golden Hall. While Xie Yue welcomes Su Ming, Yan notices Hu Liena's particular concern for him and reacts with visible discomfort. 7

After Su Ming enters a Grade-A Mimicry Training Room without looking back, Yan openly calls him arrogant. Hu Liena's defense of Su Ming only worsens Yan's dissatisfaction. 8

Elite Class One and arena rivalry

Yan objects when Su Ming is admitted to Elite Class One at level 39 under Bibi Dong's special decree. He then asks Hu Liena to be his duo-match partner, only for her to reject him publicly and invite Su Ming instead. 20

He continues pressuring Hu Liena to replace Su Ming during Su Ming's absence from the Great Soul Arena. When Su Ming returns and instantly defeats Qian Shan, Yan is stunned; after losing a bet to Hu Liena, he is told to stop raising the partnership issue. 24 25

Team selection defeat

Yan trains in seclusion in an attempt to reach level 44 and intends to confront Su Ming in the internal selection tournament. Xie Yue warns him that Su Ming and Hu Liena have already defeated opponents as strong as level 59 Soul Kings. 29

In their match, Su Ming's fourth soul skill extinguishes Yan's first four soul rings and strips away his granite lava armor. Su Ming then defeats him with Evil Phoenix God-Slaying Slash in a single attack. 30
