Background / History

Ma Hongjun awakened an Evil Fire Phoenix martial soul identical to Su Ming's, with innate level-nine soul power. Flender viewed the simultaneous emergence of the two as a major opportunity, enrolled both at Shrek Academy, and personally taught them to develop the martial soul's fire attribute as assault-type soul masters. 1

When Su Ming chose an evil-attribute first soul ring, Flender took Ma Hongjun to find a fire-attribute ring instead. Ma Hongjun endorsed Flender's position, calling Su Ming foolish for rejecting the established path and declaring that he would become a “true Golden Phoenix” through fire-attribute cultivation. 2

After returning with his first ring, Ma Hongjun proudly demonstrated Phoenix Fire Line and dismissed Su Ming's control-and-devour-oriented first skill as useless because it lacked direct explosive power. He repeatedly urged Su Ming to abandon evil-attribute cultivation and follow Flender's teachings. 2

By the time Su Ming reached level 20, Ma Hongjun was still level 18. He later supported Flender during the dispute over Su Ming's second evil-attribute ring, urging Su Ming to apologize and promise to use fire attributes for his third ring. 2 5

Appearance

Ma Hongjun is described as a chubby boy with short legs and small eyes. During martial soul possession, his form is compared to a “chubby chicken” surrounded by red-yellow flames. 1 2

He is also mocking and competitive toward Su Ming. He makes faces at him, flaunts his first ring, and frames his advice as brotherly concern while treating Su Ming's chosen path with contempt. 1 2 5
