Background / History

Taking disciples

Mu En tracked the Evil Soul Master known as the Demon Bear after the latter had wiped out and consumed a Shrek team that included Mu En's grandson. He arrived too late to prevent Zhang Lexuan's capture, but watched Xue Mingqing charge a seven-ringed opponent to save her. Impressed by the six-year-old's courage, judgment, and sense of justice, Mu En destroyed the fleeing Demon Bear with a casual release of Soul Power. 29

After seeing Xue Mingqing's ice-and-wind Snow Sword martial soul, Mu En offered to accept him as a disciple. Xue Mingqing accepted after consulting Feng Qingyang; Zhang Lexuan also became Mu En's disciple. Mu En brought both children to Shrek Academy overnight and arranged for Xue Mingqing to spend four years training under him on Sea God Island. 29 30

Preparing a successor

Mu En openly judged Xue Mingqing's character above his talent, describing him as righteous, strategic, and not reckless. Believing his own time was limited, he sought Sea God Pavilion support to invest resources in Xue Mingqing's development. 32

After Xue Mingqing displayed a thousand-year first soul ring, Mu En proposed him as the next-generation successor of Sea God Pavilion. The elders approved the proposal and committed resources to his cultivation, while Song Yunzhi was assigned as his guardian. 35 36

Mu En personally oversaw Xue Mingqing's demanding physical training. His regimen deliberately pushed Xue Mingqing to the edge of his limits without damaging his foundation, producing exceptional bodily strength and a stable cultivation base. 41 72

He also arranged increasingly demanding practical training for Xue Mingqing after his formal enrollment, including a full-power assessment against Rank 55 Soul King Wu Ming and daily sparring sessions intended to sharpen his disciple's battle experience. By the time Xue Mingqing officially enrolled at Shrek, Mu En's health had deteriorated, leaving him with less than ten years to live. Despite this, he continued to treat Xue Mingqing as his successor and concealed the boy's extraordinary foundation to protect him from hostile attention. 73

Mu En became increasingly disappointed with Shrek's senior figures, particularly Xuan Zi's stagnation and Yan Shaozhe's pettiness. He feared that neither possessed the character needed to preserve Shrek after his death. 36 70

After learning that Yan Shaozhe had hired the Evil Soul Master Ghost to intercept and murder Xue Mingqing, Mu En personally sealed Yan Shaozhe's Soul Power at the Soul King level. Xuan Zi's survival and return

Mu En's ninth soul skill initially defeated Xuan Zi so completely that the latter vanished from the battlefield without a trace. However, Xuan Zi survived the punishment, retained Rank 98 cultivation, and eventually fell into evil under the weight of his resentment and obsession. 199 200 329

As an Evil Soul Master, Xuan Zi orchestrated the destruction of Shrek's tournament team in the Bright Battle Mountain Range and continued to target Xue Mingqing. Withdrawal from Shrek affairs

Following Xue Mingqing's departure from Shrek and the elders' increasingly possessive, self-serving policies, Mu En became thoroughly disillusioned with Sea God Pavilion. He withdrew from its administration, ceased interfering with its reforms, and left Shrek's eventual prosperity or decline to its remaining elders. 206 312

Even in seclusion, Mu En retained enough concern to review Shrek's tournament roster when Bei Bei requested it. He judged the lineup competent but predicted that it was destined to lose to Heavenly Soul Royal Academy and Xue Mingqing. 313

Return to Star Luo City

Four years after Xue Mingqing left Shrek, Xue contacted Mu En through a jade pendant and revealed that Xuan Zi had survived, become a Rank 98 Evil Soul Master, and infiltrated Star Luo City. Though weakened and approaching the end of his life, Mu En immediately understood the severity of the matter. 351

Mu En accepted responsibility for the consequences of his past leniency and resolved to travel personally to Star Luo City to settle Xuan Zi's threat. He arrived overnight and again became Xue Mingqing's safeguard during the Continental Advanced Soul Master Academy Elite Tournament. 352 354 355

At Xue Mingqing's request, Mu En agreed to allow news of Xue Mingqing's enrollment at Heavenly Soul Royal Academy and participation in the tournament to circulate, supporting his disciple's decision to expose himself as bait for enemies in the shadows. Though he did not understand every secret behind Xue Mingqing's plan, he chose to trust him. 355 356

Final battle and death

Mu En confronted Xuan Zi outside Star Luo City. Their battle continued for an entire day and night in the No-Man's Wasteland, five hundred li from the city. The clash of holy and evil Soul Power devastated the surrounding region, flattening mountains and carving new chasms. When it ended, Mu En stood motionless in the ruins, his holy aura gone: his physical life had ended. Xuan Zi had disappeared, leaving his fate uncertain to the outside world. 363 365

Mu En had exhausted the last of his lifespan and sacrificed his remaining strength to cripple Xuan Zi. Feng Xuan secretly removed the catastrophically injured Xuan Zi from the battlefield and hid him in the Wind Demon Tower. Star Luo Emperor Xu Jiawei, who respected Mu En despite his disagreements with Shrek Academy, recovered Mu En's remains and sent word to Shrek. 365 368

Remnant soul and final reconciliation

Feng Xuan also preserved Mu En's remnant soul within the Wind Demon Tower. Mu En witnessed Feng Xuan kill Xuan Zi and refine his remains. Unaware of Feng Xuan's identity and expecting to be destroyed himself, Mu En calmly asked for a swift end. Instead, Feng Xuan knelt before him, addressed him as “Teacher,” and apologized for the suffering his schemes had caused. 370

When Feng Xuan removed his disguise, Mu En was shocked by his near-identical resemblance to Xue Mingqing. Feng Xuan explained that he and Xue Mingqing were two bodies divided from one person through a forbidden separation of the Wind and Snow Origin martial soul. Their apparent opposition had been staged to evade the Heavenly Dao and the gods' control. Mu En listened to his account and recognized that Feng Xuan's ruthless methods had not extinguished the righteousness in his heart. 371 372

Near the end of his soul's existence, Mu En asked Feng Xuan to protect Bei Bei, whose body and martial soul Xuan Zi had ruined. Feng Xuan accepted the request and acknowledged his own part in the events that had harmed Mu En's family. Mu En then withdrew into the tower's Nine-Layer Pure Land Loft to await his soul's final dispersal. 372
