Background / History
Chen Yuan is the Headmaster of the Shu Mountain Sacred Land and resides on Seven Stars Peak. Though the Sect Master’s lineage is sparsely populated and Seven Stars Peak appears less prosperous than the Seven Main Peaks, Chen Yuan’s strength and authority allow him to retain control of the sacred land. 112 141
Before accepting Chen Changqing, Chen Yuan had taken four disciples. Three had fallen, leaving Jian Zhenzi as his only surviving disciple; Chen Changqing became his fifth and final disciple. 112 141 209 He later makes clear that he regards Chen Changqing as his successor. 113
Chen Yuan is himself a disciple of Wu Zhen, the Grandmaster of Chen Changqing’s lineage. Wu Zhen serves as Shu Mountain’s anchor and can suppress the ancestors behind the Seven Main Peaks; Chen Yuan attributes much of his ability to restrain them to his master’s support. 320
As Headmaster, Chen Yuan remains responsible for Shu Mountain’s major external affairs and representation. He convenes the sect’s council ahead of the Ten Great Sects Grand Competition, oversees the selection of Shu Mountain’s representatives, and later briefs the selected group on the Heavenly Void Land, the tournament’s venue. 895 902
Personality
Chen Yuan is proud of exceptional talent and highly protective of the disciples he accepts. He is quick to anger when Chen Changqing is believed to be in danger, threatening True Person Li Yuan after hearing that Chen Changqing had failed to emerge from the Universe Secret Realm. 165
Despite his status, he is openly delighted by Chen Changqing’s accomplishments and repeatedly expresses amazement at his rapid growth. He considers his closing disciple’s successes a source of personal pride rather than a challenge to his own authority. 318 393 549 830
He is also cautious beneath his outward confidence. Chen Changqing’s unprecedented cultivation speed, numerous opportunities, and possession of multiple Immortal Artifacts lead Chen Yuan to worry that an outside force, remnant soul, or evil cultivator might be involved. 462 666 Nevertheless, he respects his disciple’s privacy: after recognizing Chen Changqing’s extraordinary nine Golden Cores, he explicitly refuses to pry into the opportunities and secrets behind them. 119
Chen Yuan’s reprimands toward Chen Changqing are often tempered by paternal fondness and admiration. After Chen Changqing returns from Dragon-Severing Valley with two captured imperial princes, Chen Yuan scolds him for causing a disturbance but ultimately supports his actions and declares that Shu Mountain will protect him against the Great Chu and Yinyue Holy Dynasties. 881 882

Story Role / Major Arcs
Accepting Chen Changqing
After Chen Changqing defeats the newly advanced Golden Core Realm Bai Hao with one sword strike, Chen Yuan recognizes his potential and decides to recruit him personally. Chen Changqing accepts immediately, becoming Chen Yuan’s fifth and final disciple. 110 112
Chen Yuan grants him the Sect Master lineage’s identity token and a Quasi-Immortal Artifact, then expresses his intention to make him his successor. 113
Protecting His Disciple
When Li Yuan reports that Chen Changqing has not exited the Universe Secret Realm, Chen Yuan immediately suspects disaster and erupts in fury. He only calms after learning that Chen Changqing has not fallen. 165
Before the Hundred Dynasties War, Chen Yuan sends Chen Changqing three strands of irreplaceable Shu Mountain power through Empress Liuye, demonstrating the extent of his concern for his disciple’s safety. 243
Witnessing Chen Changqing’s Rise
Chen Yuan reacts with shock and pride as Chen Changqing returns from the Hundred Dynasties War at Nascent Soul Middle Stage, having secured first place for the Maple Leaf Dynasty and become the Nine Provinces Divine Dynasty’s Imperial Son-in-law. 318
He continues to guide Chen Changqing through the Seven Peaks Martial Tournament, the Xuanyuan Clan affair, and the Seven Peaks Grand Competition, while repeatedly acknowledging that his disciple’s development exceeds expectations. 319 320 549
Chen Yuan is again astonished when Chen Changqing returns from later travels with cultivation so deep that he can no longer perceive it clearly. 823
Concern Over Chen Changqing’s Secrets
As Chen Changqing’s advancement and collection of Immortal Artifacts become increasingly extraordinary, Chen Yuan grows concerned that his disciple may be affected by an unknown hidden danger. He brings Chen Changqing to meet Wu Zhen partly so the Grand-Ancestor can examine him. 462
This concern does not prevent him from trusting Chen Changqing. Earlier, upon discovering that his disciple had formed nine Golden Cores, Chen Yuan chose not to investigate the origin of this abnormality and affirmed that every cultivator has personal opportunities they cannot disclose. 119
Defending Chen Changqing After Dragon-Severing Valley
After Chen Changqing captures the Great Chu and Yinyue Holy Dynasties’ princes at Dragon-Severing Valley and brings them back to Shu Mountain, Chen Yuan summons and reprimands him for the incident’s widespread repercussions. 881
However, Chen Yuan soon abandons the pretense of sternness. He affirms that Shu Mountain should act according to its principles, insists that the dynasties must offer payment if they want their people returned, and promises to answer any provocation against Shu Mountain with his sword. 882
Preparing for the Ten Great Sects Grand Competition
Chen Yuan calls Shu Mountain’s senior figures together to discuss the Ten Great Sects Grand Competition, with Chen Changqing already secured as one representative. During the meeting, Daoist Wu Xing reveals a hidden Sword Treasury Peak disciple also named Chen Yuan, who has cultivated the forbidden Supreme Emotionless Sword. 895
The Headmaster opposes Wu Xing’s concealment of the forbidden art but permits the same-named disciple’s strength to be evaluated. This younger Chen Yuan later duels Chen Changqing and is invited to join Shu Mountain’s tournament team; these events concern the Sword Treasury Peak disciple rather than the Headmaster. 897 898 899
Chen Yuan subsequently explains that the tournament will be held in the Heavenly Void Land, an ancient ruin formed after the fall of the Immortal Plucker. 902
