Background

Chen Ya first appears at Crape Myrtle Pharmacy in Medicine Man Town, where she addresses Bai Tang as her master and works alongside A-Yao. When Luo Qingchen stays at the pharmacy, she asks him about the upper sect and whether she might someday ascend there. 99

As a Blood Medicine, Chen Ya faces exploitation and an uncertain future. She learns that her kidney may be removed and that, if she survives, she may be sold to a brothel. Rather than resigning herself completely, she begins training relentlessly to strengthen her body and improve her odds of survival. 101 102

Initially, Chen Ya tries to secure Luo Qingchen's protection by offering him her blood and attempting to seduce him. Luo Qingchen slaps her away while affected by the tampered Yin-Yang Universe Manual; Chen Ya nevertheless interprets later gestures, including a skewer of candied haws, as signs of his interest. 99 100

When a black-robed woman attempts to cut Chen Ya open in the street, Luo Qingchen intervenes and purchases her for five taels of silver. Jiang Hui, Chen Ya's former mistress, later repeatedly attempts to reclaim her and sell her to Green Pavilion. 106 107 130

After Jiang Hui assaults Chen Ya, Luo Qingchen returns to Medicine Man Town and kills Jiang Hui and her two companions. He declares Chen Ya to be his person, permits her to keep Jiang Hui's jade pendant, and orders her and A-Yao to clean the blood from the entrance. 131

Chen Ya continues cultivating while Luo Qingchen is absent, reaches the Blood Changing Realm, and hopes to follow him to the inner sect. After Luo Qingchen enters Medicine Peak, A-Yao voluntarily stays behind so Chen Ya can accompany him instead. Chen Ya is subsequently registered as Luo Qingchen's Blood Medicine and moves into his cave dwelling. 142 160 164 166

She can be harsh, vain, and cruel toward A-Yao, mocking her scars and appearance. However, Chen Ya also tends to A-Yao after Luo Qingchen's blood draw leaves her weak, later becomes protective of her in the Black Forest, and develops a sisterly bond with her. 101 102 140

Despite fear and despair, Chen Ya refuses to surrender to her circumstances. She trains through uncertainty, resists Jiang Hui when threatened, and actively pursues cultivation so she can ascend and remain near Luo Qingchen. 102 130 132
