Background

Zhou Yan was the only son of Pill Hall Elder Zhou Zelin. His family supplied his cultivation resources, allowing him to train without taking missions, and his status made him one of the most prominent young core disciples of the Four Peaks. 128 142

He associated closely with Yin Taohua and Su Yang, who deferred to him within the Upper Courtyard. Zhou considered connections and allegiance more important than solitary cultivation, viewing his own faction as the proper path to status and resources. 128 133

His father’s longstanding conflict with Pill Hall Elder Lu Yuan shaped his interest in Li Chuan. Knowing Li Chuan was aligned with Lu Qiuhan and the Lu family, Zhou attempted to recruit him both as a useful subordinate and as a means to undermine his father’s rival. 128

Zhou’s confidence was supported not only by his family background but also by Zhou Zelin’s long-term cultivation and instruction. Zhou Yan carried himself with the entitlement of a powerful elder’s son. He reacted with displeasure when Li Chuan did not introduce himself first and spoke to him with an expectation of obedience. 128

He was ambitious, highly conscious of reputation, and convinced that background and connections determined a cultivator’s future. After Li Chuan rejected his recruitment, Zhou and his companions dismissed him as short-sighted for choosing independent training over joining their circle. 129 133

His confidence became increasingly obsessive after his public defeat by Li Chuan. He repeatedly rationalized Li Chuan’s achievements as the result of external aids or favorable circumstances, then fixated on forcing Li Chuan to kneel during the minor assessment as revenge for his own humiliation. 148 167

When Li Chuan revealed that he had also opened five Main Meridians, Zhou’s confidence collapsed beneath the pressure of their impending rematch. Rather than face Li Chuan, he fled the challenge, suffered a breakdown, and briefly contemplated suicide. 171 172

After Li Chuan became a core disciple, Zhou offered him a place in his faction, promising influence, intelligence, and protection. Li Chuan refused twice in favor of independent cultivation, leaving Zhou outwardly composed but privately offended. 128 129

Competition for the Marrow Cleansing Fruit

Believing Peak Master Zhao Ciyuan’s prize was effectively intended for him, Zhou trained for the Four Peaks Grand Competition and defeated Jiang Ran through a concealed major-mastery Sinking Edge Eight Strikes. 132 156

At the Four Peaks Minor Examination, Zhou discovered that Li Chuan had also reached the fifth Main Meridian. Despite publicly proceeding with his challenge, he disappeared before taking the arena and was declared to have failed. His assessment reward was revoked, and his quota of Lead-Cleansing Pills was deducted for three months. 171 172

Humiliated and unable to face the sect, Zhou fled into the mountains. There, North Wind offered him Yaoguang Demon Sect power and implanted the Black Insect in his heart, setting Zhou on the path of demonic cultivation. 172

Demonic Advancement and Death

Zhou returned to the Four Peaks appearing calm and resigned, while secretly relying on the Heart-Eating Insect, Human Pills, and Yaoguang Demon Sect methods to advance at an extreme pace. He eventually reached an unstable Ninth Main Meridian and Late Core Formation. 174 176 185 187

Believing his superior realm could finally secure victory, Zhou followed Li Chuan into North Wild Mountain and launched a concealed, full-strength attack while Li Chuan gathered a Purple Swallow Fruit. Li Chuan countered his strike, disarmed him, and killed him with Frost Without Trace. 186

Afterward, Li Chuan used the Heart-Eating Insect and Zhou’s demonic affiliation to make his death appear attributable to the Yaoguang Demon Sect, while Zhou Zelin chose to cover up his son’s betrayal of the righteous path. 187

Posthumous Fall of the Zhou Family

Following Zhou Yan’s death, the Zhou family publicly claimed that he had returned home to train, while Zhou Zelin privately suspected that his son had died and had joined the Demon Sect. 187

Later, Li Chuan anonymously informed Prefect Fu Yun that Zhou Zelin’s wife, Lin Yue, was a Yaoguang Demon Sect protector and that Human Pills were hidden beneath the Zhou Residence. Fu Yun’s forces searched the Earth Altar, exposed Lin Yue’s identity, and discovered more than a dozen Human Pills. 253 254

The entire Zhou household was arrested, and Fu Yun ordered the family executed under the laws against collaboration with the Demon Sect. The Zhou Residence and the family’s public standing were destroyed, completing the downfall of Zhou Yan’s lineage after his death. 254
