Background / History

Founding and Supremacy

The Heavenly Blade Ascendant founded the sect approximately a century before Li Chuan joined. He was reputed to possess strength beyond Gang-Qi. At the time, Sanyuan Prefecture’s major powers were known as the Four Gates and Seven Sects 98.

After the Cloud Wild Sword Sect’s master mocked his blade skills, the Ascendant killed him and established the Heavenly Blade Sect’s supremacy. At its height, the sect controlled the tax revenues of nineteen of Sanyuan Prefecture’s fifty-six cities 98 180.

The Patriarch’s Disappearance

The Ascendant disappeared, and the sect publicly announced that he had traveled to Flat Sand Prefecture in search of martial opportunities. Reports of his activities gradually ceased, but no definite news of his death arrived 204.

Without its founder, the sect surrendered resources and contracted. Its standing fell from first to third among the Five Gates, while its remaining fifteen-city tax holding attracted resentment from rivals. Guan Shan and the sect’s Gang Force elders nevertheless preserved its position among the Five Gates 98 109 204.

Guan Shan later told Li Chuan that the Patriarch was not dead, contradicting the account Li Chuan had previously received 226.

North Wind’s Defection

Under Zhao Ciyuan, Four Peaks had once been the sect’s strongest branch. Its outstanding disciple, North Wind, defected to the Yaoguang Demon Sect shortly before a Vajra Sect selection. His departure devastated Zhao, who subsequently withdrew from active competition over sect affairs 250.

Zhao later explained that North Wind turned to demonic cultivation after his wife was murdered, seeking rapid strength through Human Refining Pills. Although officially an enemy, North Wind later spared Li Chuan and apparently prevented further pursuit of him, suggesting that his attachment to his former sect had not entirely disappeared 255.

Li Chuan’s Recruitment and Rise

Lu Qiuhan offered Li Chuan a coveted admission place in exchange for helping remove Magistrate Wei. He subsequently entered Four Peaks, while his traveling companion Liu Peiran joined Third Peak 80 97 99.

Li Chuan initially received little attention because of his inferior bone constitution and county background. His victories gradually changed his treatment, culminating in his appointment as a chief disciple and victory in the Heavenly Blade Tournament 99 115 196 210.

His later defeat of Han Tuo at the Heroes’ Gathering challenged the Cloud Wild Sword Sect’s dominance among the younger generation. The resulting resource allocation gave the Heavenly Blade Sect forty percent of the resources being divided for the coming year 240.

  • Continuing assessment: A biennial disciple assessment helps the sect identify and retain promising martial artists 125.
  • Chief disciple succession: Four Peaks’ Minor Assessment also serves to select its next chief disciple 187.

Family Influence and Sect Traditions

Despite its formal independence, the sect is deeply entangled with aristocratic families. These families send talented representatives into the sect, where they eventually rise into influential positions. The Recommendation System balances competing family interests but also favors disciples with powerful backing 132.

Exceptional disciples receive concentrated support from the leadership. After Li Chuan’s tournament victory, the peak masters and sect master provide weapons, defensive items, and cultivation access according to sect tradition. Zhao warns that investing heavily in the wrong successor can also inflict a serious loss on the organization 211.

Internal rivalry does not eliminate collective loyalty. Wan Ling, Cheng Xiuge, and Li Jingci defend Li Chuan when Hou Jingzhao insults him, while Guan Shan refuses to exchange a disciple’s dignity for a favorable ore agreement 205 206.

Martial Arts and Inheritance

The sect teaches sword, spear, and other fighting styles as well as blade arts. Its blade techniques are nevertheless regarded as its strongest discipline 100.

Art / Inheritance Characteristics
Heavenly River Blade Technique Created by the Heavenly Blade Ascendant. Emphasizes overwhelming force, ferocity, and uncompromising downward attacks. At the Extreme Realm, it produces Heavenly River Blade Force 100 187.
Geng Metal Art The most powerful and most difficult internal art offered to Li Chuan when he joins. Its first and fifth layers each cost one hundred taels 100 186.
Shadowless Blade Technique Advanced blade art practiced by Li Chuan and Cheng Xiuge. Its perfected “Blood Delay” application is fast enough that bleeding lags behind the inflicted wound 207 208 210.
Nine-Yang Blade Art Li Jingci’s perfected blade art, used to defeat Wan Ling 209.
River-Burning Blade Technique Supreme top-tier blade art learned by Li Chuan before leaving for the Vajra Sect 242 258.
Profound Nether Sunken Abyss Record Peerless internal method Zhao Ciyuan personally gives Li Chuan for his cultivation of Profound Nether Geng Metal power 211 244.
Great Sun Radiant Heaven Record Peerless internal method corresponding to Red Bright Geng Metal True Qi; entrusted to Li Chuan as part of the Patriarch’s cultivation path 242.
Chaos Evolving Heaven Technique: Two Modes Chapter Higher inheritance connected to the Patriarch, given to Li Chuan by Zhao Ciyuan 255.
Innate Great White True Gang Legendary power associated with the founder’s fusion of yin and yang Geng Metal cultivation 180 187 242.
  • Blade-art ceiling: The sect does not possess a complete peerless blade technique, although the Scripture Pavilion contains incomplete chapters of some peerless martial arts 173 226.
  • Scattered inheritance: The Chaos Evolving Heaven Technique’s Four Symbols Chapter is located in Flat Sand Prefecture; a later reply to Li Chuan’s inquiry places it within the Vajra Sect’s inner sect 258 279 280.

Grounds and Cultivation Resources

The sect’s grounds are vast enough to impress Li Chuan as comparable in scale to a metropolis 99.

Facility Function / Access
Scripture Pavilion Extensive martial collection, reputed to be the largest in Sanyuan Prefecture. Its fourth floor holds supreme arts and is normally restricted to chief disciples and elders 98 154 173.
Mission Hall Posts assignments with their locations, rewards, and requirements; provides disciples with a way to earn cultivation funds 102.
Upper Courtyard Core disciple residential area; Inner disciples need permission to enter 99.
Martial Arts Arena Public training ground containing blade marks useful for practice 115 186.
Heavenly Blade Lecture Altar Also called the Blade Altar. Hosts free lectures and martial instruction from Gang Force elders 116.
Blade Stele Forest Open ground filled with blade-mark steles left by Gang Force elders, Guan Shan, the founder, and some visiting experts 186 187.
Training Rooms Graded cultivation facilities. Grade-A rooms cost one thousand taels per day and can normally be purchased only by elders, peak masters, and the sect master 184 220.
Medicine Hall Supplies the Core disciples’ monthly Golden Marrow Soup allowance 127.
Cloudwater Pavilion Highest point of the sect, overlooking cloud seas, birds, and the grounds below 207.

Blade Stele Forest Fees

Visitor Entry Fee Duration
Ordinary disciple 1,500 taels 187 Twelve hours 187
Chief disciple 1,000 taels with a chief disciple token 187 Twelve hours 187

The forest originated as a custom: elders left a blade mark upon reaching Gang Force. A later sect master enclosed the site and introduced admission fees. The founder’s short, cracked stele stands behind Guan Shan’s and gives different viewers different insights, although most gain nothing useful from it 187.

— Guan Shan 206

“The Heavenly Blade Tournament is meant to foster your fighting spirit, not to forge life-and-death enemies.”
— Ye Fengmian 210

  • Other sects once eagerly left blade marks in the Blade Stele Forest, but that practice disappeared as the Heavenly Blade Sect weakened 187.
