Background / History

Chenxiang was born to the Third Holy Mother, Yang Chan, and the mortal scholar Liu Yanchang. Liu Yanchang died at the Holy Mother Temple on Mount Hua before Chenxiang was born. When Chenxiang was seven, his uncle Erlang Shen found him and his mother; after Chenxiang was captured to force her compliance, Yang Chan accepted imprisonment beneath Mount Hua in exchange for Erlang Shen allowing Chenxiang to grow up in the human world. 47 48

After taking his mother's Lotus Lantern and descending from the Heavenly Palace, Chenxiang wandered the human world. Storytellers' tales of Sun Wukong's conflict with Erlang Shen made the Great Sage Equal to Heaven his ideal master; Chenxiang sought strength so that he could defeat Erlang Shen and free his mother. 47

Before meeting Lu Bian, Chenxiang was targeted as a sacrifice to a lake demon and unsuccessfully tried to buy instruction from a wandering Taoist. Lu Bian rescued him, recovered the gold leaf the Taoist had taken, and ultimately chose to help him seek justice rather than leave the child alone. 46

Personality

Chenxiang is courageous and intensely determined. Even while pursued by demons and separated from his mother, he remains focused on becoming strong enough to challenge Erlang Shen. 46 47

He quickly places deep trust in Lu Bian, whom he considers the kindest person he has met besides his mother. He is also compassionate: while watching a monkey perform for a street entertainer, he worries about the animal and wants it treated well. 47 50

His academic comprehension is comparatively weak despite his exceptional physical talent, requiring Lu Bian to teach him patiently and repeatedly. 48

Abilities & Skills

Half-Divine Physiology

Chenxiang's half-human, half-god heritage gives him exceptional physical potential.

  • Lu Bian considers his innate physical talent greater than that of an ordinary human. 47
  • His cognitive understanding does not match his bodily aptitude. 48

Magnetic Field Cultivation

Lu Bian trains Chenxiang in the Ultimate Boundless Qigong and begins guiding him toward the Perfect Realm.

  • Reaches Electric Current Propulsion after six months of training. 48
  • Spars against Lu Bian, who suppresses his own strength to Electric Current Propulsion during their practice. 48
  • Studies the Ultimate Boundless Qigong and Lu Bian's self-created Dog Beating Technique. 48

Animal Abilities

Over three months, Chenxiang develops techniques modeled on animals.

  • Eagle vision — enhanced sight. 48
  • Bat hearing — enhanced hearing. 48
  • Gecko wall-climbing — ability to climb walls. 48

Equipment / Items

  • Lotus Lantern — His mother's treasure, which Chenxiang stole before returning to the human world. Its protection made him fearless when captured for sacrifice; Lu Bian believes even a water-monkey demon would be reduced to ashes by one flash of its power. 47
  • Lu Bian's donkey — Often carries Chenxiang during travel and accompanies him when he visits the market. 47 50

Relationships

  • Lu Bian — Guardian, teacher, and familial caretaker. Lu Bian refuses to formally become Chenxiang's master, but promises to teach him all his skills so he can rescue his mother. 47 48
  • Yang Chan / Third Holy Mother — Mother. She accepted imprisonment beneath Mount Hua to protect Chenxiang and secure his chance to grow up. 47 48
  • Liu Yanchang — Father. A mortal scholar who died before Chenxiang was born. 47
  • Erlang Shen — Maternal uncle and the one responsible for imprisoning Yang Chan. Chenxiang intends to defeat him and free his mother. 46 47
  • Sun Wukong / Great Sage Equal to Heaven — Chenxiang's ideal master. He wants to learn Sun Wukong's skills because storytellers said the Great Sage could rival Erlang Shen. 46 47
  • Lu Bian's donkey — A regular companion and playmate during Chenxiang's time living with Lu Bian. 50
