Background

Madara was regarded as the strongest Uchiha in a thousand years. He brought his Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan to its limit, later achieved Polarity Unification through Hashirama Senju’s power, and awakened the Rinnegan. In his own assessment, this placed him beyond Indra Ōtsutsuki and among the highest Six Paths-level beings beneath Kaguya and Hagoromo. 16 180 207

His lifelong benchmark was Hashirama Senju. Even with the Nine-Tails under his control and inexhaustible Chakra, Madara was unable to overcome Hashirama’s Wood Release, Sage Mode, Wood Human, Wood Dragon, and True Several Thousand Hands. He did not hate Hashirama for this defeat, but remained unable to abandon his desire for a decisive one-on-one victory. 184

Madara is supremely confident in the decisive value of personal strength. He dismisses elaborate schemes as the work of weak “rats” and considers absolute power sufficient to render such plans meaningless. This confidence leads him to treat Orochimaru’s request to observe the battle as a trivial reward for reviving him. 184

He is intensely drawn to powerful opponents. Ryusuke’s use of Hashirama’s Sage Art Wood Release shocks him, but the discovery rapidly becomes excitement: Madara sees Ryusuke as a more promising opponent than even Hashirama was at the same age. 184 186
