Background

Sasuke was raised as the younger son of the Uchiha clan and was initially a popular, proud Academy student. His early rivalry with Ryusuke centered on the Top Student title; despite repeatedly requesting matches, Sasuke lost to Ryusuke throughout nearly four years of Academy competition. 6 12

At age seven, Sasuke survived the Uchiha Clan Massacre, which was attributed to his older brother, Itachi. He returned to school after five days having awakened the Sharingan, but the cheerful and competitive boy had become an orphan obsessed with restoring Uchiha honor and surpassing Ryusuke. 11 12

Personality

Before the massacre, Sasuke was confident, competitive, and accustomed to attention from classmates. He considered Ryusuke his foremost rival, repeatedly pursuing him in Academy tests and combat matches. 6 11 12

The massacre redirected his life toward revenge. He pursued strength at any cost, accepted Orochimaru’s influence, and defected from Konoha to kill Itachi.
