Background / History

Arrival in Tokyo

Manaka first appears in Lan Ze’s apartment after he completes the standalone game Moon World. He initially regards her as a game character who has become real, while she insists on her reality and expresses feelings for him. Their domestic arrangement includes an agreement over household chores 1 4.

Her connection to the Root predates these events: she has possessed it since birth. She deliberately restricts her own powers because knowing her future would make life boring. Consequently, her early suspicions about Lan Ze’s activities develop through observation and magical traces rather than unrestricted foreknowledge 13 15.

Seventh Singularity

Manaka notices the aura of the Beast of Regression around Lan Ze before learning about his relationship with Tiamat. She later intervenes against Goetia in the Seventh Singularity, physically overpowering him and bombarding him with magic. Her intervention prevents Tiamat from needing to release her Spirit Core’s restraints, which could have undone the group’s efforts to restore her self-control 13 43 44.

Goetia’s defeat exposes Manaka’s identity as Beast VI to Lan Ze. Seeing him with Tiamat also explains the unfamiliar Beast scent she had repeatedly detected on him 44.

Back in Tokyo, Manaka tries to keep Tiamat from finding their home by concealing its traces behind several magical barriers. Tiamat nevertheless arrives, and Lan Ze welcomes her into the household. Their rivalry subsequently makes room for shared activities, including competitive gaming 49 52.

Holy Lance Curse and Fuyuki

When the Holy Lance alters Lan Ze’s body, Manaka tracks him to Vortigern’s castle. She examines the magic within him and supplies power from the Root, but her promise of a quick solution to the curse is not fulfilled immediately. She instead helps retrieve the Holy Grail and investigates whether the corruption has also affected his physical body in reality 96 97 98 100.

During the subsequent Holy Grail War, she confronts Ryougi Shiki and demands that she stop pursuing Lan Ze. Their dispute escalates into a battle involving ancient monsters, threatening Fuyuki until Lan Ze intervenes. Manaka later makes the Holy Grail wish that removes the Holy Lance’s erosion from him 146 147 148 149 154.

She initially tries to leave Shiki behind on the return to Tokyo. After Shiki finds the apartment anyway, Manaka allows her to stay, reasoning that keeping her nearby makes supervision easier 158 163 165.

Temple of Time

Manaka watches Lan Ze’s later duel with Goetia, ready to intervene if his life is endangered regardless of their agreement to fight one-on-one. She subsequently joins the battle in the Temple of Time 236 256.

At Lan Ze’s request, she enables Goetia to see the doctor’s true identity through his Spirit Origin. A later passage confirms that she reactivated Omniscience and Omnipotence during the battle, allowing her to locate the other women and inspect Lan Ze’s magical energy afterward 258 261.

Appearance

  • Apparent age: Looks approximately thirteen or fourteen; her actual age is not given 10.
  • Hair: Short, pale golden or light-blonde hair 8 97.
  • Eyes: Sapphire blue 49 169.
  • Build and complexion: Petite, fair-skinned, and repeatedly compared to a porcelain doll 97 124 169.
  • Clothing: Wears Western-style dresses, including sundresses and a green dress; white stockings also feature in her early appearances 8 52 97 165.
  • Mannerisms: Often stands with her hands behind her back and maintains an elegant smile, even while threatening someone 10 97 146.

Personality

Manaka cultivates the bearing of an elegant princess and takes pride in appearing mature. Her confidence comes from her extraordinary strength, but her everyday attentiveness is equally pronounced: she knows Lan Ze’s class schedule and recognizes departures from his usual habits. She also helps with messages and household responsibilities 4 8 15.

Her strongest emotional vulnerability is jealousy. She treats her long acquaintance with Lan Ze as grounds for priority over other women, calls herself his “main wife,” and is particularly threatened by Shiki’s similar connection to the Root. Her insecurity also extends to her slower physical development 146 158 162 262.

Her protectiveness can become controlling. She confines Lan Ze to his room to enforce rest and admits to thoughts of locking him away. Nevertheless, she restrains her lethal impulses because he likes kind-hearted girls, gradually accepts other members of the household, and eventually speaks openly to him about her insecurity 147 165 246 262.
