Background / History

Irisviel is an Einzbern homunculus created as the vessel for the Greater Grail in the Fourth Holy Grail War. Though she spent a decade in a cultivation tank, she states that she had only been alive for eight days after emerging from it. Her artificial upbringing initially leaves her inexperienced with ordinary life, emotions, and interpersonal boundaries. 288

Ahadon initially betroths Irisviel to the man he believes is Emiya Kiritsugu, intending for the marriage to secure the Einzbern family's position in the Holy Grail War. After Kira Yoshikage kills Ahadon and reveals that he is not Kiritsugu, Irisviel accepts Kira's control rather than resisting him; she believes preserving the Einzbern workshop and its long-held wish is more important than herself. 286 287 290

Unlike ordinary Einzbern homunculi, Irisviel was implanted with a self capable of autonomous action and situational judgment. This allows her to develop genuine feelings and make decisions beyond simple obedience, though her initial worldview remains shaped by her role as a tool and Grail vessel. 290

Her relationship with Kira gradually gives her a stronger sense of self. She stops reflexively assuming fault for everything around her, learns to enjoy books and bathing, and comes to understand happiness, love, and motherhood. 289 292 294 She later gives birth to their daughter, Illyasviel von Einzbern. 294

During the Fourth Holy Grail War, Irisviel accompanies Saber in Fuyuki, provides intelligence against enemy Servants, and eventually becomes Saber's Master after Saber destroys the Holy Grail under Emiya Kiritsugu's Command Spell. 303 324 She also accepts Mordred as her Servant after Matou Kariya can no longer sustain her. 316

Following the war, Irisviel becomes the ninth head of the Einzbern family.
