Background / History
Irisviel was created by the Einzbern family as an artificial human and raised within Einzbern Castle. Justeaze von Einzbern calls himself her creator, while Yubis directs her conduct toward Lan Ze after his summoning. Her intended purpose was to serve as the Holy Grail’s wish-granting vessel by collecting the mana and souls of fallen Servants. 104 139
Having been unable to freely leave the castle, Irisviel initially has little experience of the outside world. Her first trip through Fuyuki leaves her delighted by ordinary shops and streets; Lan Ze’s offer to take her shopping plants in her the desire for freedom. 106
She later reveals that Illya was created from her vital blood as a spare Lesser Grail capable of collecting Servant souls. Irisviel did not know of Illya’s existence until she began dreaming of a little girl, but she accepts the child as her daughter and wishes to meet her. 141 169 170
Appearance
Irisviel is a silver-haired woman with red eyes, pale skin, and a gentle, elegant bearing. She is often described as delicate and mature, though her excitement over unfamiliar experiences can make her seem childlike. 104 106 192
- Long silver hair, sometimes falling over her neck or face. 106 109
- Red eyes noted for their tenderness. 137
- Usually wears white clothing, including a thin white slip dress; she later wears a red dress and Ryougi Shiki’s pink kimono. 114 117 138
- Her resemblance to Illya is pronounced; Illya is described as a miniature version of her. 141 192
Personality
Initially, Irisviel is respectful, gentle, and trusting toward Lan Ze, treating him as a king rather than merely a Servant under instructions from the Einzbern family. She readily follows his plans, including his attempt to secure Command Spells at the Holy Church. 104 106
Her sheltered upbringing leaves her naïve about the outside world, but she is intelligent and attentive. She assists Lan Ze’s research into the Jewel Sword, deduces that Matou Sakura’s altered state may be responsible for a magical influence on her, and later uses diplomacy to defuse tensions among Lan Ze’s companions. 113 114 123 154
As she develops personal desires, Irisviel becomes increasingly assertive, playful, and jealous. She uses Command Spells for intimate purposes, insists that Lan Ze is more than her Servant, refuses to abandon him after their contract is disrupted, and eventually binds him with Silver Thread Eagle while asking for exclusivity. 114 131 138 173
