Background / History
Tiamat is a Creation Mother Goddess who had fallen out of step with the planet's established ecosystem. She regards humans as “aliens” who would kill her if she did not drive them away; her fear stems from being abandoned as something the world no longer needed 16.
While sleeping in the Imaginary Number World, she encountered Lan Ze after his Dark Night Sun Ship crashed near her. He entered her dreamscape, where she treated him as her child and developed an intense attachment to him 12 22. Lan Ze's acceptance and confession of affection became deeply important to her, as she had not received such affection since her return 17.
Lan Ze eventually escorted Tiamat out of the dreamscape and into Mesopotamia. Although Uruk initially regarded her as a possible threat, Gilgamesh allowed her entry, while Ishtar immediately recognized her as her mother 28 29. Tiamat experienced ordinary pleasures—including anime, games, modern technology, cooking, and her first date in Uruk—through Lan Ze's guidance 26 31 32 52 73.
Her separation from Gorgon and the King of Magecraft's actions triggered her transformation into Beast II. Even while rampaging, Tiamat instinctively used the Sea of Life as a shield and attempted to suppress her own destructive power rather than harm humanity 38 40. Lan Ze brought her back from the Sea of Life, allowing her to retain reason while sealing down her Spirit Core; she subsequently aided the fight against Goetia 41 42.
After leaving the game world, Tiamat lived with Lan Ze in Tokyo. Her bond with him became increasingly complicated: she continued to call him her child while openly acknowledging him as her lover 50 66 152. She later appeared in multiple Holy Grail War incidents to retrieve and protect him, terrifying other Beasts with the difference in their power 131 132 227.
Appearance
Tiamat usually appears as a beautiful, gentle woman with a voluptuous figure and an absent-minded expression. Her appearance changes substantially depending on whether her Beast power is sealed or active.
- Long cyan- or blue-toned hair; occasionally described as black in later appearances 31 129 248.
- Clear crimson, star-like eyes 28 72.
- Distinctive horns, often concealed beneath a bowler hat when she dresses for outings 31.
- A small visible canine tooth when she sings or speaks 12 28.
- Commonly wears black dresses; one knee-length dress bears a butterfly-like pattern 28.
- Her sealed Beast state retains dark greenish-black scales 41 42.
- Her full Beast form possesses black scales, black-red body patterns, and steel-like wings 38.
Personality
Tiamat is gentle, naive, and profoundly maternal. She has difficulty with human language and customs, often communicating through variations of “Aaa,” though she gradually learns to use simple human words 12 28. Her long isolation and exile left her lonely and intensely dependent on the people she accepts, especially Lan Ze 16 22.
She is easily fascinated by ordinary modern experiences. Anime teaches her about dating, a handheld game console and television become favorite distractions, and she enthusiastically attempts to cook despite having little understanding of seasoning or human recipes 30 31 50 52 73.
Her tenderness coexists with possessiveness. Tiamat reacts darkly to perceived intimacy between Lan Ze and other women, marks him with her scent, restricts Ishtar's contact with him, and refers to him as a “bad child” when punishing him 23 75 82. She is nevertheless considerate of others' feelings, such as avoiding embarrassing Ereshkigal despite her jealousy 75.
In battle, her usual dazed demeanor disappears. Threats to Lan Ze or her children provoke cold rage and decisive violence, though she remains reluctant to cause broad destruction or endanger Humanity's Order 42 132 140.
Abilities & Skills
Creation Mother Goddess Authority
Tiamat holds the original authority of the Mother of All Beasts. Gorgon's comparable authority is explicitly only a portion granted by Tiamat.
- Her presence causes demonic beasts to fear her and flee 34.
- She can create lifeforms, including Lahmu-like creatures 16 17.
- Her magical pressure effortlessly nullifies Gorgon's pressure and attacks 34.
- She can manifest objects based on Lan Ze's imagination, including a television 23.
Song
Tiamat's singing is both her primary expression and a devastating magical weapon.
- Her songs inspire awe in living beings and can make them cheer or tremble 29.
- She uses song to disperse beasts, erase magical pressure, and fire destructive light cannons 34 35.
- Her song reverses magical explosions and disrupts Goetia's Demon God Pillars and magecraft 42.
- Her attacks are difficult to contain; even a simple song can function at the scale of a Noble Phantasm 140.
- Limit: Her large-scale attacks risk destroying the surrounding area, making her unsuitable for careless participation in the Holy Grail War 140.
Sea of Life / Tide of Chaos
Tiamat commands the Sea of Life, which changes character according to her state.
- Creates the Tide of Chaos, a massive protective barrier around her 40.
- In Beast state, the Sea of Life becomes lethal poison to humans and Heroic Spirits 40.
- Can conceal her presence so thoroughly that even Sajyou Manaka cannot detect her 102.
- Can bind targets with black mud and forcibly pull them toward her 75 99.
- Can shield and support Lan Ze during combat 40 43.
Immortality and Spirit Core Suppression
Tiamat has no death-line and is described as lacking the concept of death.
- Mystic Eyes of Death Perception cannot identify a death-line on her 165.
- Even Goetia acknowledges that she cannot be killed by overwhelming heat or destruction 42.
- She can voluntarily suppress her Beast Spirit Core and maintain sanity after awakening 41 42.
- Her sealed Spirit Core remains exceptionally large—at least Crowned level 41.
Mana Replenishment
Tiamat can replenish Lan Ze's magical energy through intimate contact.
- Her replenishment rate exceeds that of the Holy Grail 28.
- She repeatedly offers to restore Lan Ze's mana and stamina when he is depleted 27 50 95.
- Her attempts to replace Lan Ze's magic with her own can cause him distress 96.
Relationships
- Lan Ze / Haku — Regards him as her child and later openly calls him both child and lover. Her strongest attachment, protectiveness, and jealousy center on him 12 17 99 152.
- Gilgamesh — Recognizes him as her child; Gilgamesh is shocked and emotional upon seeing her, addressing her as “Mother” 129.
- Ishtar — Her daughter. Tiamat accepts her presence but forbids further intimacy between Ishtar and Lan Ze 29 31 82.
- Ereshkigal — Accepts Ereshkigal within Lan Ze's household. Ereshkigal admires Tiamat and shows concern for her well-being 31 73.
- Sajyou Manaka — Initially tense rivals over Lan Ze, but their relationship becomes more cooperative in domestic life. Manaka remains suspicious of Tiamat's romantic interest in him 50 72 99.
- Gorgon — Holds a derivative portion of Tiamat's Mother of All Beasts authority. Tiamat's presence and song overwhelm her 34.
- Goetia — A fellow Beast and opponent. Tiamat rejects his invitation to destroy and recreate the planet, choosing to protect Lan Ze instead 42 43.
- Kama — Kama fears Tiamat as a complete Beast whose power vastly exceeds her own; Tiamat pursues her after she harms Lan Ze 131 132.
- Mordred — Treated as one of Tiamat's children; Tiamat protects her from the other women's anger and binds her with the Sea of Life after her defiance 132 153.
- Minamoto no Raikou — Meets Tiamat in the Dark Temple and allows her private access to Lan Ze; Raikou is shocked and jealous of Tiamat's closeness with him 227.
