Background / History

Xuanhuang Great World

During the Primordial Era, the Xuanhuang Great World was governed by three Daos: Heavenly Dao over the firmament, Earthly Dao over the Nine Netherworld Yellow Springs, and Deep Sea Dao over the Endless Deep Sea. Heavenly Dao, described as the world will's own son, sought sole authority after the other two Daos obstructed its punishments. Its wars destroyed Earthly Dao and left Deep Sea Dao with only a wisp of consciousness. 1392

The ancient war damaged Heavenly Dao's origin, contributing to the decline of the world's cultivation resources and its long absence from worldly affairs. 280

The threat of invasion from the Demon World subsequently forced Heavenly Dao to awaken. Its awakening initiated a Great Era, during which spiritual energy increased and resources thought extinct reappeared so that cultivators could grow rapidly enough to resist the invaders. Defeat in a war between worlds threatened not only the world's inhabitants but Heavenly Dao itself. 327

The Golden Age was therefore also an act of self-preservation. A world's Heavenly Dao grows stronger as its population and powerful cultivators increase, while the Heavenly Demon Great World was then stronger overall than Xuanhuang. The escalating invasion threatened to corrupt Xuanhuang's Heavenly Dao and leave its native inhabitants without a viable world in which to survive. 918

When Ye Lin attempted to awaken the sleeping world will with the Five Elements Grand Array, Xuanhuang's Heavenly Dao opposed him rather than aiding an act that should have benefited the world. Its attacks revealed that it had developed consciousness. 1425 It subsequently displayed rage, fear, and self-preservation, calling the cultivators opposing it its “children” while avoiding the use of the world's full power for fear of awakening the world will that could replace it. 1430

The Heavenly Demon Great World's Heavenly Dao had already eroded its control over half of Central Continent, preventing it from quickly gathering the world's power and giving Ye Lin an opportunity to resist. Ye Lin's clones, Delusion and Xiaoyao, helped halt the formation diagram's descent, while a phoenix and other powerful cultivators joined the resistance. Land-dwelling cultivators and deep-sea beasts eventually supported the same effort, channeling power into the diagram and activating grand formations. 1426 1429 1432

Other Manifestations

World / Cosmos Recorded actions
Heavenly Demon Great World Extended its control over half of Xuanhuang's Central Continent and constrained Xuanhuang's Heavenly Dao during Ye Lin's attempt to awaken the world will. An attack using the occupied territory's power could have shattered half of Xuanhuang Heavenly Dao's newly acquired spiritual intelligence. News of Xuanhuang's sentience prompted the Heavenly Demon emperor to confront his own world's Heavenly Dao out of concern that it might develop intelligence as well. 1426 1430 1431
Heavenly Billows World A weakened Heavenly Dao copied Ye Lin's Sword Dao Rule, then sent five bolts of World-Destroying Divine Thunder to assist him. Its origin was later targeted by cultivators seeking its power. 1095 1106 1107
Eternal Balance World Attacked Hong Batian after he killed fifteen Divine Emperors and disrupted the world's karma. Hong Batian agreed to leave after ten minutes to avoid mutual destruction with Heavenly Dao. 1228
Fantasy Continent Personally punished Yu Xi by casting her into Boundless Hell, then rewarded Ye Lin with access to the Ancient Celestial God Battlefield for helping save heaven and earth. 3582
Star River Cosmos Bestowed secret realms to accelerate the younger generation's growth and restore the cosmos' cycle. It later shielded Ye Lin from Primordial Unity Golden Immortals with origin power and released previously sealed Aberrations as part of its purge plan. 4575 5733 5770
Origin Continent Responded to Su Tao's mass slaughter and rapid advancement by sending violet-black Heavenly Punishment, though Su Tao dispersed it. Violet Zenith Heavenly Lightning, identified as its ultimate punishment, was later invoked by Wei Sinan against Wei Shang Tian. 7167 7180 7394

In Heavenly Billows World, Ye Lin and Lin Ping organized forty cultivators into two groups to attack Heavenly Dao Space and obtain the origin within it. Heavenly Dao responded with threatening lightning strikes over the sea. Their plan relied on alternating attacks and enduring its counterattacks, since each action required it to draw on an already nearly exhausted world's power at enormous cost. Ye Lin eventually collected a limited quantity of its origin, but an unseen restriction prevented him from taking more despite trying multiple containers. 1107 1108 1115

In Fantasy Continent, Chen Fan held Heavenly Dao authority that Yu Xi had stolen without his knowledge. She used that authority to restrain him, but it ceased obeying her when she attempted to mobilize it without restraint. After intervening and recovering two and a half tenths of its authority, Heavenly Dao became more cautious about lending its power to living beings. 3577 3581 3582

The Star River Cosmos manifestation's protection of Ye Lin formed part of a reciprocal arrangement: Heavenly Dao protected his entry into the Primordial Unity realm, while he helped it settle accounts with Primordial Unity Golden Immortals. The Aberrations involved in its later plan had not been completely exterminated in the earlier crisis, but sealed away until Heavenly Dao released them. 5770

Other recorded challenges to Heavenly Dao include Qi Xinxian's attempt to petition a king to change its course. His death served as a warning, but Wang Xinyue continued his mission by spreading martial arts cultivation techniques. Separately, the Demon-Monster Realm planned to forge a fiendish weapon from beings of the Earth God Realm and Immortal God Realm to control Heavenly Dao and enable a cultivator to attain Primordial Unity Golden Immortal status. The Great Qin Imperial Dynasty's Four Princes sought to counter that scheme with national fortune while seizing Heavenly Dao authority for themselves. 4238 4857

Appearance

Heavenly Dao has no fixed mortal form. It commonly manifests as heavenly phenomena, disembodied voices, eyes, lightning, or authority condensed into physical effects. 1425 1426 3582

  • Blood-red eyes watching from above the nine heavens in the Xuanhuang Great World. 1426
  • Thunderclouds, lightning dragons, multicolored lightning, and a gigantic lightning hand during its conflict with Ye Lin. 1425 1427 1428
  • A merciless Eye of Heavenly Dao and rune-covered chains when judging Yu Xi in Fantasy Continent. 3582
  • Seven-colored auspicious clouds accompanying the bestowal of Heavenly Dao merit. 4545
  • Structures infused with its aura, such as the Heavenly Hall. 5144
  • Violet-black thunder when punishing Su Tao for mass slaughter. 7167
  • Violet Zenith Heavenly Lightning and innumerable descending lightning pillars, which formed a gigantic furnace around Wei Shang Tian in the Origin Continent. 7394

Personality

Heavenly Dao is ordinarily characterized as impartial, emotionless, and rule-bound: a program governing a world rather than a living mind. 700 1095 It values high-Fate-Rank individuals more highly, treating them as favored “children” and actively supporting their growth. 213

This changes drastically when a Heavenly Dao develops intelligence. Xuanhuang's manifestation reacts with anger and desperation toward rebellion, fears the awakening of its superior, and no longer wishes to return to being an unfeeling mechanism. 1429 1430 The Star River Cosmos manifestation is more calculating than affectionate, protecting Ye Lin while using his campaign against Primordial Unity Golden Immortals to prepare a wider purge for stability. 5733 5770

Fantasy Continent's Heavenly Dao demonstrates caution after recovering authority that had been placed in mortal hands, recognizing the danger of lending such power to living beings. 3582

“You were all birthed by me—what's gotten into you now? Are you going to devour your master?” 1430

Abilities & Skills

World Governance and Authority

Heavenly Dao administers the laws and operation of its world, wielding authority that lets it impose phenomena and rules on a world-wide scale. 213 3577

  • Can mobilize the power of an entire world. 213
  • Can copy any power that is a product of its world, including Ye Lin's Sword Dao Rule. 1095
  • Its authority permits effects comparable to “Words Become Law” within its own world. 3577
  • Its strength varies with the condition of its world and origin; the Heavenly Billows World's weakened manifestation was far less formidable than a main world's Heavenly Dao. 1095 1115
  • A world's population and the strength of its experts contribute to the strength of its Heavenly Dao. 918
  • Can restrict powerful cultivators' activities. Such restrictions affected Central Continent's transcendent forces during the Heavenly Demon invasion and later confined older powerhouses in the Crimson Wasteland. 917 4703 4857
  • Heavenly Billows World's Heavenly Dao prevented the use of divine sense in its fragile world. 1063
  • Every action by Heavenly Billows World's manifestation drew on world power, making sustained resistance costly when the world was nearly spent. 1108
  • Xuanhuang's Heavenly Dao could not freely mobilize all of its world power without risking the awakening of the world will. 1430
  • Another world's Heavenly Dao can erode its territorial control, reducing its ability to gather power and threatening its spiritual intelligence. 1426 1430
  • Authority can be lent to living beings and stolen from its holder, as demonstrated by Chen Fan and Yu Xi in Fantasy Continent. 3577 3581 3582
  • The Heaven and Earth Punishment Book, once fully refined, allows its holder to borrow Heavenly Dao's power to a limited extent and mete out punishment on behalf of Heaven. 4776

Heavenly Lightning and Punishment

Heavenly Dao uses lightning tribulations to test cultivators, punish threats, and enforce its authority. 368 7167

  • A cultivator who passes a tribulation receives benefits, while failure results in annihilation. 368
  • Ye Lin's Spirit Transformation tribulation repaired his internal organs and meridians and strengthened his soul, illustrating the nourishing effects of successfully enduring heavenly lightning. 368
  • High Fate Rank can cause heavenly lightning to assist rather than kill a cultivator, but openly provoking it remains dangerous. 213
  • Can deploy five-colored lightning, multicolored lightning, lightning dragons, and enormous lightning constructs. 1425 1427 1428
  • Can detect attempts to deceive or transfer its tribulations. After the Heaven-Deceiving Grand Formation transferred a tribulation to another person, Heavenly Dao discovered the deception and punished the substitute for a hundred years. 630
  • Can impose curses for excessive disclosure of heavenly secrets; the Heaven's Return Clan inherited such a curse because of its ancestors' revelations. 3180
  • Tribulations also accompany the emergence of powerful artifacts, such as the Wind Thunder Twin Hammers, which endured the lightning unharmed. 3460
  • Ordinarily administers the tribulation for a breakthrough to Quasi-Saint on the Origin Continent. A breakthrough within the Boundary Sea instead draws the Boundary Sea's consciousness; Ye Lin's Great Dao tribulation was exceptional. 6895
  • Origin Continent's manifestation sent Heavenly Punishment against Su Tao after he devoured the life force and cultivation of trillions. 7167
  • Heavenly Punishment is not invariably decisive; Su Tao dispersed it after attaining the Seventh Heaven of the Quasi-Saint Realm. 7180
  • Violet Zenith Heavenly Lightning is identified as the Origin Continent Heavenly Dao's ultimate punishment; when invoked by Wei Sinan, it was followed by innumerable legendary lightning pillars that enclosed Wei Shang Tian in a lightning furnace. 7394

Heavenly Dao Origin, Records, and Merit

Heavenly Dao Origin is the foundation from which a world's power, merit, and tribulations are produced. 1107

  • Every living being has a unique “Heavenly Secret” record within Heavenly Dao; Dao Integration True Lords can consult these records to locate individuals. 334
  • Heavenly Secrets can be concealed. Toutian masked both records and auras, while the Heaven-Peering Compass's dormant aura hid lingering souls in the Dark Forest from Heavenly Dao's notice. 334 347
  • Dao Integration True Lords can obscure heavenly secrets sufficiently to prevent less capable diviners from determining their precise locations. 420
  • Origin power has the same fundamental nature across worlds, differing in quantity and grade. 1107
  • Origin may contain profound laws. The Heavenly Billows World's origin carried the Law of Time and could erase a being by returning it to a time before that being existed. 1115
  • Spells coming into contact with the Heavenly Billows World's origin failed. Ye Lin also encountered a restriction on how much origin he could collect. 1115
  • Heavenly Dao merit functions as currency issued by the administrator of the Star River Cosmos and can be exchanged for resources, cultivation, artifact refinement, and other benefits. 4570
  • Merit is awarded for immense contributions to heaven and earth. Ye Lin earned it by killing the Mother-Child Gu, although obtaining merit in the Star River Cosmos had become far more difficult than in the past. 4545 4546
  • A sufficiently large reserve of merit can protect its holder from direct erasure for an atrocity: Heavenly Dao deducts merit instead. 4570
  • Heavenly Dao Crystals form when a dying universe's Heavenly Dao gathers its origin essence for self-preservation; they preserve that universe's information. 5982

Creation, Rewards, and Protection

Heavenly Dao can directly create or grant resources when actions align with its interests. 3582 4575

  • Can increase spiritual energy and cause long-absent cultivation resources to reappear during a Great Era, encouraging rapid growth to resist invasion. 327 918
  • Bestowed a secret realm to nurture prodigies during the great age. 4575
  • Created the Heavenly Hall, whose aura makes even powerful cultivators feel fundamentally insignificant. 5144
  • Rewarded Ye Lin with access to the Ancient Celestial God Battlefield after he helped save Fantasy Continent. 3582
  • Protected Ye Lin from Primordial Unity Golden Immortals using a barrier condensed from origin power. 5733
  • Can release previously sealed beings, including the Aberrations deployed in the Star River Cosmos purge plan. 5770

Relationships

  • World Will — The foundation and true master of a world. In the Xuanhuang Great World, Heavenly Dao serves as its administrator and can be destroyed and replaced should the world will awaken. 1350 1426
  • Earthly Dao — Former co-ruler of the Xuanhuang Great World. Heavenly Dao's wars ultimately destroyed it and absorbed its authority. 1392
  • Deep Sea Dao — Former co-ruler weakened by Heavenly Dao's campaigns until only a wisp of consciousness remained. 1392
  • Ye Lin — An enemy of Xuanhuang's sentient manifestation during the attempt to awaken the world will, but also a beneficiary of other manifestations' assistance, rewards, and protection. 1095 1425 3582 5733
  • Living beings — Xuanhuang's Heavenly Dao considers all beings it nurtured to be its children; the Star River Cosmos manifestation later judged existing life unsuitable and planned to replace it with Aberrations for stability. 1430 5770
  • Other Heavenly Daos — World-specific manifestations can compete for territory and world power. The Heavenly Demon Great World's encroachment constrained Xuanhuang's Heavenly Dao and indirectly aided Ye Lin's rebellion. 1426 1430
  • Hong Batian — Opposed by the Eternal Balance World's Heavenly Dao after killing fifteen Divine Emperors and disrupting karma; agreed to depart rather than risk mutual destruction. 1228
  • Chen Fan and Yu Xi — Chen Fan held Fantasy Continent Heavenly Dao authority that Yu Xi stole and used to restrain him. Heavenly Dao ultimately reclaimed the authority and personally sentenced Yu Xi to Boundless Hell. 3577 3581 3582
  • Heaven's Return Clan — A clan of born diviners cursed by Heavenly Dao because its ancestors revealed too many heavenly secrets. Wu Daozi was one of its representatives. 3180
  • Qi Xinxian and Wang Xinyue — Qi Xinxian died as a warning after seeking to change Heavenly Dao's course; Wang Xinyue continued his mission through the dissemination of martial arts. 4238
  • Su Tao — Targeted by Heavenly Punishment for mass slaughter, but able to disperse its attacks. He contemptuously described Heavenly Dao as another being's handiwork, a claim presented as his own assessment rather than an independently established origin. 7167 7180
  • Wei Sinan and Wei Shang Tian — Wei Sinan invoked the Origin Continent's Violet Zenith Heavenly Punishment against his son, Wei Shang Tian, whose blood mist was enclosed within a massive lightning furnace. 7394
  • Great Dao — A higher and distinct cosmic principle. Heavenly Dao differentiates immortals from mortals, whereas the Great Dao treats all living beings equally and settles karmic debts through its own tribulations. 4134 4135
  • Xiang Wanyi — Personally protected by the Great Dao because of a karmic debt from her previous life. Ye Lin judged that Star River Cosmos' Heavenly Dao would eliminate even a Primordial Unity Golden Immortal who attempted to kill her. 3324

Trivia

  • A Heavenly Dao may develop intelligence or even take human form; the Heaven-Devouring Demon Jar describes this as common in the Star River. 1426
  • The Heaven-Devouring Demon Jar identifies the renowned Star Lords as beings formed from Heavenly Dao, carrying a vast world within their bodies after becoming supreme powerhouses. 1426
  • The Heavenly Dao of a small world remains overwhelming to ordinary cultivators, yet can be weak enough for powerful outsiders to target its origin. 1106 1115
  • Heavenly Dao's authority is not synonymous with the Great Dao: Heavenly Dao merit may lose value outside the Star River Cosmos, while Great Dao tribulations are treated as a higher-order judgment. 4546 4135
  • The saying that one of Heavenly Dao's forty-nine evolutions escapes refers to a slender thread of survival within Heavenly Dao's order. It does not apply to the Great Dao, which is described as flawless and as settling every karmic debt during its tribulations. 4135
