Background / History
Usopp reached Skypiea with the Straw Hat Pirates aboard the Knock Up Stream. Excited by the Sea of Clouds, he impulsively jumped overboard, only to fall through the clouds and require a joint rescue by Luffy and Robin. The experience left him terrified of Skypiea’s hazards. 171
At Water 7, Usopp focused on saving the badly damaged Going Merry. He sought out Iceburg for repairs and struggled to accept that the ship’s damage was irreversible; soon afterward, the Franky Family attacked and left him gravely injured. Lu Yu found and healed him. 203 204 205
Following the Straw Hats’ setbacks against the Pacifistas, Lu Yu reprimanded Usopp and the crew for neglecting their training. Usopp was among the first sent away by Lu Yu for further training. 235 238
Personality
Usopp is imaginative, expressive, and prone to grandiose self-promotion. He readily adopts heroic titles such as “Usoland” and enjoys the recognition that follows, though the attention can quickly overwhelm him. 348 364 415
He is also intensely fearful of powerful enemies and dangerous situations. He repeatedly argues for caution, whether facing the Four Emperors or confronting threats in Dressrosa and Zou. 696 660
Despite this fear, Usopp repeatedly chooses to act when others depend on him. After initially fleeing from Trebol, he returned upon hearing the Tontatta Tribe’s defiance, admitted that he was not their legendary hero, and resolved to save them anyway. 394 396

- Used a Kanjuro-drawn projectile resembling his ultra-spicy-pill appearance to terrify Sugar into unconsciousness. 471

Dressrosa and Operation SOP

Zou
On Zou, Usopp remained wary of hostile forces and relied on Lu Yu’s strength for security. He also became emotionally attached to Kanjuro’s poorly drawn dragon, Ryunosuke, and angrily defended its efforts when Zoro and Law dismissed it. 641 640
