Background
Lu Yu chose to follow Luffy after recognizing him as the “child of destiny,” believing that staying near him would eventually lead Lu Yu to what he sought. Luffy and Zoro later joined the rest of the crew in asking Lu Yu to make them stronger. 168 190
Luffy trained under Lu Yu, improving the speed and power of his attacks. Although he hoped to continue training directly with Lu Yu, he was assigned to Rayleigh instead. 196 238
Personality
Luffy is direct, impulsive, and difficult to deter once he has chosen a goal. He rushes toward Ace in Impel Down and Marineford, charges straight through Dressrosa’s defenses, and jumps from King’s Plateau rather than look for a safer route. 246 262 411
He is fiercely protective of his friends and treats alliances as relationships between equals rather than obligations. He insists on rescuing Ace and Sanji, thanks allies such as Bartolomeo for their help, and rejects the idea that an alliance should be built on subservience. 244 463 701
Despite his recklessness, Luffy inspires intense loyalty. Fighters from the Corrida Coliseum, the Tontatta Tribe, the Happo Navy, and other allies rally around him during the conflict with Doflamingo. 420 433 606
Abilities & Skills
Gum-Gum Fruit Physiology
Luffy’s rubber body lets him stretch, inflate, rebound from attacks, and reshape his limbs for combat.
- Inflates himself to block Franky’s gunfire and withstands a powerful mechanical punch that sends him hundreds of meters away. 207
- Uses elongated limbs for mobility, including evading Machvise while his foot is trapped. 413
- Can use Gum-Gum Ball to roll through enemies and protect himself while escaping Silver Fortress. 619
- Uses attacks including Gum-Gum Rocket Launcher, Elephant Gun, Jet Whip, Gatling, Bazooka, and Leo Bazooka. 265 625 463 603 557
Haki
Luffy uses Armament Haki to strengthen his body and attacks, and Supreme King Haki to overpower opponents.
- Hardens his body parts with Armament Haki, including while using Third Gear against Pica. 424
- Fuses Armament Haki with Gear Fourth’s elastic attacks, making his strikes stronger and more difficult to evade. 553 555
- His Supreme King Haki can force opponents into fear and submission; he later uses it directly against Wizeber. 196 732
Gear Fourth: Bounce Man
Bounce Man is Luffy’s Gear Fourth form, created from his experience fighting massive beasts during Rayleigh’s training.
- Enlarges his muscular body while retaining powerful elasticity and rebound. 552
- Moves through the air by bouncing and can rapidly evade Doflamingo’s string attacks. 553
- Uses curving, pursuing attacks such as Gum-Gum Culverin and Gum-Gum Python. 553
- Its Haki expenditure and physical strain impose a time limit, leaving Luffy weakened when the form ends. 554 555 557
Relationships
- Lu Yu — His current boss, brother, protector, and early trainer. Lu Yu places Luffy under Rayleigh’s instruction, safeguards him during the Ace rescue operation, and remains a decisive ally. 434 238 257 579
- Roronoa Zoro — Crewmate and frequent combat partner. Luffy relies on Zoro during Dressrosa’s push toward Doflamingo. 167 411 413

- Bartolomeo — Devoted admirer and ally. His barriers repeatedly create escape routes for Luffy, while Luffy calls him “Chicken Head” or “Chicken Can.” 463 625
- Sanji — Crewmate whose forced departure becomes Luffy’s immediate priority after Zou. 701 706
- Silvers Rayleigh — Luffy’s Haki instructor after Lu Yu assigns him to train under Rayleigh. 238 243
