Background / History
Doflamingo was born into the Donquixote Family, one of the nineteen royal lineages that became the Celestial Dragons after the World Government’s founding. His father, Donquixote Homming Saint, renounced their status and left Mary Geoise so the family could live as ordinary humans. Doflamingo rejected this life from the outset, demanding the deference and privileges he believed were owed to him. 353 477 482
The family’s attempt to live among common people ended in persecution. Local residents, carrying hatred toward the Celestial Dragons, burned the family home, beat Doflamingo and his brother Rosinante, and later tried to execute the surviving family members. Their mother died from illness during this period. 481 483
At eight years old, Doflamingo manifested Conqueror’s Haki while being tormented by the townspeople. Trebol found him afterward, called him a man “chosen by heaven,” and gave him a Devil Fruit and a gun. Doflamingo used that gun to kill Homming Saint, blaming his father for stripping the family of its power and security. 545
Doflamingo later formed the Doflamingo Pirates with Trebol, Diamante, Vergo, and other followers who pledged to acknowledge him and help fulfill his ambitions. He expanded the crew’s black-market operations, relocated their base toward Reverse Mountain, and trained Trafalgar Law as a prospective future right-hand man. 484 547
He viewed Law as similar to his younger self and intended to recruit him permanently. However, Corazon—Doflamingo’s younger brother and a Marine spy—betrayed the Family to protect Law and prevent Doflamingo from acquiring the Op-Op Fruit. Doflamingo responded by activating Birdcage across Minion Island, taking control of its inhabitants, and personally shooting Corazon. 490 497 500
By the Dressrosa conflict, Doflamingo ruled the country behind an image of peace while maintaining control through the Donquixote Family, the Toy House, and fear. When his deceptions were exposed, he trapped the entire nation inside Birdcage and turned civilians, pirates, and Marines against one another through a bounty game. 326 407 408
Appearance
Doflamingo is most notably associated with red sunglasses, which are shattered after his defeat. 571
- Red sunglasses. 571
- Frequently wears a confident or sinister smile, even while threatening enemies. 353 407
- Uses a pistol in addition to his string-based combat. 500 540
Personality
Doflamingo is calculating, cruel, and deeply convinced that violence and cruelty are inherent to humanity. His childhood persecution and resentment toward his father shaped his contempt for ordinary people and his desire to destroy the existing world order. 477 479 545
He treats manipulation as both entertainment and strategy. In Dressrosa, he weaponizes civilians by offering bounties for designated targets and forcing everyone inside Birdcage into a “kill or be killed” game. He also controls Bellamy as a puppet specifically to make Luffy fight someone he does not wish to hurt. 407 473
Despite his brutality, Doflamingo places value on those he considers part of his Family. He was reluctant to suspect Corazon’s betrayal and expressed regret at having to erase Law, whom he had expected to become his right-hand man. 490 442
Abilities & Skills
String-String Fruit
Doflamingo wields the String-String Fruit, producing and controlling white strings for offense, defense, movement, restraint, and large-scale manipulation. 553 555
- Fires cutting and piercing attacks such as Bullet String, Finger Pistol Bullet String, Five Color Strings, and Thousand Arrows Piercing the Heart. 405 439 569
- Uses Spiderweb Wall and Shield White Thread as defensive barriers. 541 555
- Can bind and directly manipulate targets with strings, including Bellamy and Luffy. 473 569
- Uses Parasite to force people to attack others against their will. 497
- Can create Body Thread attacks and deliver kicks powerful enough to split the royal palace in half. 405 546
String Clone
Doflamingo can create a puppet-like duplicate made entirely of strings.
- A severed “Doflamingo” can prove to be a string puppet rather than his real body. 405
- Attacks can pass harmlessly through the clone as its body disperses into threads. 440
- Uses clones to pressure opponents from multiple directions and keep enemies away from his real body. 405 474
Devil Fruit Awakening
Doflamingo’s Devil Fruit has awakened, allowing him to convert his surroundings into strings. 555
- Transforms streets, buildings, and the ground into controllable white strings. 555 569
- Creates overwhelming terrain-wide attacks that restrict Luffy’s movement and prevent close combat. 555 556
- Can use the converted environment to bind targets and launch concentrated barrages. 569
Birdcage
Birdcage is Doflamingo’s island-scale string barrier and control technique.
- Enclosed Minion Island after Corazon’s betrayal, preventing anyone from escaping or entering. 497
- Its strings could not be cut by the weapons used by trapped inhabitants. 497
- Later enclosed Dressrosa, cut off outside communication, and progressively contracted toward the center of the country. 407 541
- Doflamingo accelerated its contraction to force Luffy into a final confrontation, endangering the entire population. 561
- Disappeared only after Doflamingo was knocked unconscious. 571
Haki
Doflamingo possesses Conqueror’s Haki and Armament Haki.
- Awakened Conqueror’s Haki at eight years old, knocking out the people around him during his childhood trauma. 545
- Clashed evenly with Luffy’s Conqueror’s Haki, generating red-and-black shockwaves that shook the palace. 545
- Uses Armament Haki to harden his body in combat. 405
Self-Treatment
Doflamingo can use strings inside his own body as emergency treatment.
- After Law’s Gamma Knife damaged his internal organs, he stood back up by using internal threads to repair them. 544
- He admits this is not true recovery, but it allows him to continue fighting after severe internal injuries. 544 556
Combat Training
Doflamingo has learned and incorporated the combat methods of his officers.
- Uses techniques associated with Diamante, Gladius, and Lao G. 479
- Can fight Trafalgar Law directly with Haki-enhanced strikes and kicks. 479

Dressrosa Takeover Crisis
Doflamingo anticipated the Straw Hat–Law alliance and initially believed he had complete control over their movements. The collapse of the Toy curse and the return of Dressrosa’s suppressed citizens disrupted that confidence. 371 398

Birdcage and Final Battle
Doflamingo trapped Dressrosa inside Birdcage, controlled civilians, and placed bounties on Luffy, Law, Sabo, King Riku, and their allies. He used clones, Bellamy, awakened strings, and the shrinking cage to isolate and exhaust Luffy. 407 408 473 555
Law critically damaged Doflamingo with Gamma Knife, but Doflamingo temporarily repaired his internal injuries with strings. Luffy’s Gear Fourth initially overwhelmed him, but Doflamingo’s awakened ability and Birdcage kept the battle going. 543 544 553 555
