Background / History

Doflamingo was born into the Donquixote Family, one of the nineteen royal lineages that became the Celestial Dragons after the World Government’s founding. His father, Donquixote Homming Saint, renounced their status and left Mary Geoise so the family could live as ordinary humans. Doflamingo rejected this life from the outset, demanding the deference and privileges he believed were owed to him. 353 477 482

The family’s attempt to live among common people ended in persecution. Local residents, carrying hatred toward the Celestial Dragons, burned the family home, beat Doflamingo and his brother Rosinante, and later tried to execute the surviving family members. Their mother died from illness during this period. 481 483

At eight years old, Doflamingo manifested Conqueror’s Haki while being tormented by the townspeople. Trebol found him afterward, called him a man “chosen by heaven,” and gave him a Devil Fruit and a gun. Doflamingo used that gun to kill Homming Saint, blaming his father for stripping the family of its power and security. 545

Doflamingo later formed the Doflamingo Pirates with Trebol, Diamante, Vergo, and other followers who pledged to acknowledge him and help fulfill his ambitions. He expanded the crew’s black-market operations, relocated their base toward Reverse Mountain, and trained Trafalgar Law as a prospective future right-hand man. 484 547

He viewed Law as similar to his younger self and intended to recruit him permanently. However, Corazon—Doflamingo’s younger brother and a Marine spy—betrayed the Family to protect Law and prevent Doflamingo from acquiring the Op-Op Fruit. Doflamingo responded by activating Birdcage across Minion Island, taking control of its inhabitants, and personally shooting Corazon. 490 497 500

By the Dressrosa conflict, Doflamingo ruled the country behind an image of peace while maintaining control through the Donquixote Family, the Toy House, and fear. When his deceptions were exposed, he trapped the entire nation inside Birdcage and turned civilians, pirates, and Marines against one another through a bounty game. 326 407 408

Despite his brutality, Doflamingo places value on those he considers part of his Family. He was reluctant to suspect Corazon’s betrayal and expressed regret at having to erase Law, whom he had expected to become his right-hand man. 490 442

Doflamingo anticipated the Straw Hat–Law alliance and initially believed he had complete control over their movements. The collapse of the Toy curse and the return of Dressrosa’s suppressed citizens disrupted that confidence. 371 398

Cyrus apparently beheaded him, but the “death” was revealed to involve Doflamingo’s string-clone ability. Doflamingo then escalated the conflict by splitting the royal palace and openly declaring his nationwide bounty game. 400 405 407

Birdcage and Final Battle

Doflamingo trapped Dressrosa inside Birdcage, controlled civilians, and placed bounties on Luffy, Law, Sabo, King Riku, and their allies. He used clones, Bellamy, awakened strings, and the shrinking cage to isolate and exhaust Luffy. 407 408 473 555

Law critically damaged Doflamingo with Gamma Knife, but Doflamingo temporarily repaired his internal injuries with strings. Luffy’s Gear Fourth initially overwhelmed him, but Doflamingo’s awakened ability and Birdcage kept the battle going. 543 544 553 555
