Background
Obito first encounters Uchiha Ye during the Uchiha Clan Downfall Night. Ye recognizes both Obito’s identity and codename, then exploits his knowledge of Kamui to evade pursuit. Obito is immediately unsettled by Ye’s familiarity with his abilities and resolves to capture him for answers 3.
Operating under the identity of “Uchiha Madara,” Obito joins Akatsuki to monitor Orochimaru, recruit capable members, and build his own strength. He initially tolerates Ye’s entry into the organization, but secretly has Zetsu monitor him as Ye’s rapid growth and unknown origins make him an uncontrollable threat 7 12 29.
Appearance
Obito commonly operates concealed behind a mask and changes its design according to the situation.
- Wears a tiger-pattern mask when departing to kill Uchiha Ye 55.
- Uses a white mask bearing a Rinnegan-and-three-tomoe pattern while confronting Mifune 147.
- His damaged mask is shattered during his later battle with Ye, exposing his grim expression 198.
- His right Mangekyō Sharingan visibly bleeds when he overextends Kamui or Susanoo 60 61.
Personality
Obito is calculating, secretive, and accustomed to manipulating events from the shadows. He considers intelligence decisive, researches Ye’s past, deploys Zetsu as a spy, threatens Danzō, and negotiates with Ōnoki when Akatsuki faces international pressure 29 77.
His confidence deteriorates after Ye repeatedly counters abilities Obito considered decisive. Ye’s knowledge of Kamui, Izanagi, and Obito’s vulnerabilities turns Obito increasingly angry, desperate, and impulsive; even Zetsu observes that he has lost his former calm and control 57 59 158 159.
Despite his caution, Obito is fiercely committed to the Eye of the Moon Plan and to creating a world for Rin. This fixation drives him to risk his eyes, seal Moryō within himself, and pursue greater power even after becoming isolated from Akatsuki and the wider Ninja World 61 167 203.
Abilities & Skills
Mangekyō Sharingan and Kamui
Obito’s Mangekyō grants space-time techniques centered on the Kamui Dimension.
- Can make attacked body parts intangible by transferring them into the Kamui Dimension 59.
- Can move between the real world and Kamui, as well as absorb or release targets and objects through spatial vortices 59.
- Combines Kamui with Fire Style in Fire Style: Blast Wave Wild Dance 55.
- Uses Kamui to draw Ye into the Kamui Dimension and detonates stockpiled Explosive Tags there 57.
- Cannot remain intangible while absorbing, releasing, or attacking; he also cannot move during those openings 59.
- Intangibility has a limited duration of roughly five minutes 59.
- Inside the Kamui Dimension, he cannot use intangibility to avoid physical damage 57.
- Jin’s Kamui Sharingan makes using intangibility especially dangerous, as Jin can attack or enter Obito’s dimension directly 196.
Izanagi
Obito uses Izanagi to rewrite fatal outcomes at the cost of a Sharingan.
- Converts unfavorable events during its active period into illusion, allowing him to reappear after being killed 58.
- One use is stated to grant ten minutes of effective invincibility 58.
- Later uses spare Sharingan for repeated five-minute periods of invulnerability, but loses an eye after each use 200.
- His final remaining Sharingan makes him markedly more cautious, as another loss would remove his last resurrection opportunity 200 202.
Susanoo
Obito manifests multiple forms of Susanoo through his Mangekyō Sharingan.
- Skeletal Susanoo — A blue-green chakra skeleton used after Ye’s attacks exhaust his other defenses 60.
- Second-form Susanoo — A complete warrior with flesh and meridians, formed after Zetsu replenishes his chakra 61.
- Tengu Armor Susanoo — A heavily armored third form whose pressure exceeds that of a Tailed Beast 196.
- Yata Divine Mirror — Absorbs incoming attacks, including Ye’s Magma Hounds and massive lava palms 61 197.
- Yata Mirror Magatama — Chakra magatama that can travel through spatial vortices and carry Spirit Binding Seal markings 60.
- Sustained use causes severe ocular strain, bleeding, physical exhaustion, and susceptibility to being overwhelmed by prolonged attacks 60 61 197.
Wood Style and Moryō’s Power
After acquiring Moryō, Obito develops Wood Style specifically to oppose Ye.
- Absorbs Moryō’s body with Kamui, then later confirms that he has sealed the demon within himself 167 196.
- Wood Style: Deep Forest Emergence — Produces vast chakra-draining branches that can fill an enclosed area or create an enormous forest 196 198.
- Wood Style: Wood Dragon Technique — Creates a massive wooden dragon head capable of intercepting Kamui by replacing its target 196.
- Wood Clone — Uses a wooden duplicate to evade Ye’s lava attacks 197.
- Sage Art Wood Release: True Several Thousand Hands: Hundred-Handed Wood Buddha — Summons a hundred-meter wooden Buddha as a desperate full-power technique 198.
- Moryō’s chakra grants immense reserves, but Ye’s Magma Hell can burn through Deep Forest Emergence despite its regenerative properties 196.
Fire Style and Sealing Techniques
- Fire Style: Phoenix Sage Fire Technique — Fires agile projectiles from multiple angles 57.
- Spirit Binding Seal — Applied through explosive attacks and Susanoo projectiles to restrain or threaten Ye’s elemental form 57 60.
- Uses large stores of Explosive Tags in the Kamui Dimension as prepared ambush weapons 57.
Relationships
- Uchiha Ye — Primary enemy and the obstacle Obito considers most dangerous to the Eye of the Moon Plan. Ye repeatedly exposes his techniques, defeats him in battle, and ultimately kills him 29 55 203.
- Zetsu — Spy, partner, and battlefield support. Zetsu monitors Ye, merges with Obito to heal and replenish chakra, and assists his schemes to acquire Moryō and recruit allies 45 61 167.
- Nagato / Deva Path Pain — Akatsuki ally turned adversary. Nagato discovers Obito’s manipulation of Akatsuki and attempts to eliminate him, forcing Obito and Zetsu to flee 100.
- Uchiha Itachi — A fellow Akatsuki member whom Obito considers predictable because he understands Itachi’s history and weakness, unlike Ye 45.
- Hiruko — A prospective ally who seeks Ye’s Sharingan for the Chimera technique. Hiruko abandons their partnership after accusing Obito of cowardice and excessive caution 186.
- Moryō — Demon whose body and soul-related power Obito seeks and seals within himself to strengthen his campaign against Ye 167 196.
- Biwa Jūzō and Momochi Zabuza — Former Akatsuki members who seek revenge because Obito’s control of the Fourth Mizukage intensified Kirigakure’s Blood Mist Policy 102.
Story Role / Major Arcs
- Uchiha Clan Downfall Night — Pursues Ye after their first encounter, but Ye escapes by exploiting his knowledge of Obito’s inability to materialize freely while pursuing 3.

Trivia
- Obito’s greatest concern is not simply Ye’s strength, but Ye’s unknowable origins, abilities, and growth ceiling; he explicitly considers this more dangerous than Itachi’s known weaknesses and limits 45.
- He intends to use Ye’s Sharingan after killing him, but Ye instead acquires Obito’s left eye from Kakashi, creating a direct counter to Kamui intangibility 55 76.
- Hiruko openly calls Obito a coward after Obito refuses to attack Ye without further preparation 186.
