History
Conflict with the Uchiha Clan
Long-running disputes between the Leaf leadership, other village factions, and the Uchiha Clan brought the village close to open conflict. The Uchiha had been pushed to the village’s fringes; Xuan Yu predicted that the clan would be the first to fall and that the struggle would weaken every side 19 30 61.
During the crisis, Xuan Yu intervened on behalf of the Uchiha and threatened the Leaf with destruction unless they could leave peacefully. Hiruzen and clan head Uchiha Fugaku negotiated their departure instead of continuing the confrontation 74 76.
| Settlement term | Agreement |
|---|---|
| Property | The Leaf would pay 1.9 billion ryo for the Uchiha’s village properties; the clan retained ownership of Naka Shrine 78. |
| Police Force | The Uchiha would withdraw, handing its responsibilities to the Leaf garrison within three days 78. |
| Departure | The clan would leave the village and establish South Leaf Village on land Fugaku had purchased elsewhere in the Land of Fire 76 98. |
The settlement did not end the hostility. Uchiha bodies returned from Leaf forces had been tortured and stripped of their Sharingan, deepening Fugaku’s anger and the clan’s resentment 89 90 92.
Threats after the split
A Ghost Lantern technique later covered the Leaf’s sky. Hiruzen estimated that its detonation could rival more than one hundred million Explosive Tags; Xuan Yu dispelled it, but the incident terrified villagers and shinobi 84 86.
Obito subsequently attacked Kakashi in the Hokage’s office. Kakashi was taken to the Leaf Village Hospital in critical condition, and Hiruzen sought Tsunade’s help. With threats mounting around the Land of Fire, Jiraiya returned to the Leaf, and Hiruzen asked him and Tsunade to remain through the anticipated Fourth Great Ninja War 138 139 140 150.
