Background / History

Konan was an orphan in the war-torn Land of Rain who survived by stealing food with Yahiko. The pair lived in a hidden mountainside cave, where they carefully stored stolen provisions and avoided drawing attention with fire. Despite their hardship, Konan remained compassionate, worrying about the baker they had stolen from and hoping to repay him when they were older 97.

A Sunagakure squad discovered their cave and intended to kill Yahiko while taking Konan captive. Terrified and powerless, Konan was saved when the wandering samurai Ryōken annihilated the squad with a single sword strike 97 98. She and Yahiko subsequently invited him into their cave, offered him their stolen bread, and eventually asked him to teach them ninjutsu 98 100.

Under Ryōken's guidance, Konan extracted Chakra and devoted herself to Paper Release. She and Yahiko soon fought a Sunagakure team together; Konan defeated a Chunin by disguising explosive seals within paper shuriken, though the squad's captain severely injured both children afterward 101 103. Ryōken healed them with Water Release Body Forging, which later became part of their training 107 108.

When Ryōken departed for the Land of Earth, Konan chose to remain with Yahiko in the Land of Rain. She wished to stay with Ryōken but refused to abandon Yahiko's effort to change their homeland and judged herself too weak to be anything but a burden 166.
