Background
Yu Xiaogang is the son of Yu Yuanzhen, sect master of the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan. Despite being a direct descendant of one of the Upper Three Sects, his mutated martial soul, Luo Sanpao, leaves him unable to break past level 29. At age twenty-four, he is driven from the clan after becoming unable to justify further expenditure of its resources on him. He travels to Spirit City seeking a way to overcome his bottleneck and prove he is not worthless. 6
Upon arriving in Spirit City, Xiaogang publicly accuses Ling Feng of fabricating his ten-thousand-year third spirit ring. His repeated theories—that Ling Feng is using a disguise skill, a spirit bone, or a second martial soul to commit fraud—are disproven by a Purple-Robed Bishop’s inspection. Pressured by the bishop, Xiaogang invokes his lineage to avoid punishment. 6 7
He later joins Spirit Hall and becomes fixated on Bibi Dong after learning that she is the Pope’s disciple and researches twin martial souls. Believing that their respective martial-soul problems make them suited to one another, he studies twin martial souls in hopes of gaining her attention and obtaining access to Spirit Hall’s deeper inheritance. 12 14
Appearance
Yu Xiaogang is a young man with a buzz cut and a gloomy demeanor.
- His skin is left pale, festering, and later scabbed after being afflicted by Ling Feng’s Death Spider Poison. 12 16
- He is described as looking increasingly disheveled and pathetic during his time in Spirit City. 16 26
Personality
Yu Xiaogang is proud of his Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan heritage despite being estranged from it. He is highly sensitive to insults concerning his cultivation, mutated martial soul, and lack of achievement; when threatened, he repeatedly relies on his father’s status and clan affiliation for protection. 6 7 28
His desire for recognition develops into desperation. Envious of Ling Feng’s talent and closeness to Bibi Dong, Xiaogang assumes Ling Feng is exploiting her status while pursuing Bibi Dong himself for access to cultivation resources and Spirit Hall’s secrets. 15 16 17
He is opportunistic in scholarship. After finding the Rakshasa Meditation Method, he publishes it alongside theories drawn from Spirit Hall archives, seeking fame rather than verifying whether the technique is safe for others. 22 23 27
Abilities & Skills
Luo Sanpao
Yu Xiaogang’s mutated martial soul is Luo Sanpao, an external spirit described as a malformed derivative of the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon lineage. 10 23
- His inherited techniques manifest as fart-based abilities rather than their intended draconic forms. 7
- Thunder Dragon Claw and Thunder Fury become foul-smelling gaseous attacks through Luo Sanpao. 7
- He can use Luo Sanpao’s two spirit skills only three times per day. 7
- Luo Sanpao is a prototype of the Golden Sacred Dragon and strongly rejects the evil-aligned power cultivated through the Rakshasa Meditation Method. 23
- It can replenish Xiaogang’s spirit power by consuming radishes. 10
Spirit Theory
Xiaogang has studied spirit theory through the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan’s archives and Spirit Hall’s library.
- He researches twin martial souls to seek Bibi Dong’s attention and solve his own cultivation problem. 14
- He publishes the Rakshasa Meditation Method with additional personal theories, earning widespread recognition as a “Master of Spirit Theory.” 23 26
- Qian Xunji judges much of Xiaogang’s work to be copied from Spirit Hall archives, poorly reasoned, or seriously flawed. 27
Rakshasa Meditation Method
Xiaogang discovers the method in Spirit City’s library, unaware that Ling Feng deliberately arranged for him to find it. 21 22
- The technique initially increases his rate of spirit-power absorption. 23
- Its evil and dark attribute conflicts with Luo Sanpao, causing severe pain and spirit-power regression. 23
- His spirit power falls from level 29½ to level 28 after practicing it. 23
- Despite the backlash, he publishes the method to gain fame and leverage with Bibi Dong. 23
- The technique proves compatible with several sinister or poisonous martial souls, contributing to his public reputation even as it remains harmful to him. 26
Relationships
- Yu Yuanzhen — Father and sect master of the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan; Xiaogang invokes his name to avoid punishment in Spirit City. 7
- Ling Feng — Rival and source of Xiaogang’s humiliation. Xiaogang repeatedly accuses him of fraud, envies his talent, and suspects him of exploiting Bibi Dong. 6 7 15 16 26
- Bibi Dong — Object of Xiaogang’s interest. He seeks her attention because he believes she can help resolve his martial-soul defect and grant him access to Spirit Hall’s secrets. 12 14 26
- Rakshasa Bibi Dong — Her past attachment to Xiaogang has faded; she watches his behavior without defending him and comes to doubt his motives. 6 8 17
- Qian Xunji — Pope of Spirit Hall. He considers Xiaogang’s theories unimpressive but initially retains him for political reasons connected to the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan. 27
- Luo Sanpao — His mutated martial soul; its incompatibility with the Rakshasa Meditation Method causes Xiaogang’s cultivation to regress. 23
