Background / History
Dugu Bo reached the Titled Douluo realm through his own cultivation. His Jade Phosphorus Snake Emperor produces toxins whenever he cultivates, gradually poisoning his own body. The Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well helps sustain him despite this condition 13 28.
His son died from accumulated toxins, leaving Dugu Bo deeply depressed. He subsequently devoted himself to his granddaughter, Dugu Yan, and the search for a cure, hoping to prevent her from suffering the same fate 16 36.
Discovering Yu Hengqing’s Cleansing Lightning
After Dugu Yan’s first spar with Yu Hengqing, Dugu Bo discovered that her accumulated poison had decreased by one-tenth. He checked the result three times before investigating what she had done differently 15 16.
Dugu Bo approached Yu Yuanzhen and offered medicinal treasures to arrange another spar. To conceal the family’s poisoning problem, he claimed that Dugu Yan’s martial soul had shown signs of evolution. Observing the second match confirmed that sparring with Yu Hengqing reduced her toxins 16.
The resulting arrangement provided Yu Hengqing with a Nine-Grade Purple Ganoderma as compensation for future sparring sessions. When Yu Hengqing moved his training to Thunder Valley, Dugu Bo agreed to bring Dugu Yan there weekly 17 19.
Supporting Yu Hengqing
Dugu Bo and Dugu Yan joined Yu Hezai at Thunder Valley while waiting for Yu Hengqing’s return. When Yu Hengqing arrived, Dugu Bo summoned his martial soul and checked the surroundings for danger; his relief was tied to Yu Hengqing being Dugu Yan’s only known means of removing her toxins 28.
Yu Hengqing proposed treating Dugu Bo by condensing his accumulated poison into a core. In exchange, he requested access to the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well. Dugu Bo accepted the proposal and subsequently gave him a Ruyi Treasure Bag containing poisons and medicinal herbs, taught him poison use, and stayed to assist with his divine trial 28 29.
Return to the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well
After making theoretical progress on the Poison Core Method, Dugu Bo took Yu Hengqing to the Sunset Forest. Too impatient to travel by carriage, he carried the boy under his arm and reached the well that afternoon 33.
His initial experiments failed, prompting him to seek ancient texts. On returning, he identified why the extracted toxins kept dispersing, but suspended further attempts because the solution required multitasking he had not yet mastered. He then escorted Yu Hengqing home to the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Sect 34 36.
Personality
Dugu Bo is known for being reclusive and arrogant, but he will negotiate and spend valuable resources for Dugu Yan’s welfare. He initially conceals the family’s poisoning problem from outsiders, then becomes more open with Yu Hengqing after receiving the Soul Core Method 16 31.
His outward composure contrasts with his affection for his granddaughter. He comforts her gently, prioritizes her treatment over his own, and accepts that even an unsuccessful experiment on himself could provide useful experience for her future cure 16 28 36.
He is proud of his poison expertise without being careless. At the well, he avoids experimenting on unique herbs he does not understand and warns Yu Hengqing that some areas threaten even his own life 33 34.
Abilities & Skills
Poison Expertise
Dugu Bo researches, prepares, and teaches the use of poisons 29 31.
- Poison instruction: Teaches Yu Hengqing during his stay in Thunder Valley 29.
- Passing on formulas: Once Dugu Yan’s toxins begin diminishing, he teaches her any poison mixture she is capable of preparing 31.
- Defensive miasma: Surrounds the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well with poison. Those below Titled Douluo strength would succumb within a quarter of an hour; even Dugu Bo finds the barrier troublesome 33.
- Antidotes: Provides Yu Hengqing with a Detoxification Pill before crossing the miasma 33.
Jade Phosphorus Snake Emperor
His martial soul produces poison as a special form of soul power, but its accumulation also causes his chronic illness 28.
- Recurring symptoms: Overcast or rainy weather brings a numbing itch in his ribs lasting more than an hour, with attacks at noon and midnight 28.
- Unresolved drawback: No completed cure or successful Poison Core condensation is documented by his return from the well 36.
Poison Core Method
Dugu Bo adapts the Soul Core technique supplied by Yu Hengqing, replacing the soul power normally condensed into a solid core with his accumulated toxins 28 34.
- Intended benefit: Concentrate the poison into a core rather than allow it to remain dispersed throughout his body 28.
- Initial failure: Extracting a sliver of toxin causes severe pain; it dissipates and rejoins his body before reaching his dantian 34.
- Diagnosis: The poison already inside his body attracts the extracted toxin back into itself 36.
- Required solution: Enclose the extracted toxin in soul power to isolate it, demanding simultaneous control of multiple processes 36.
- Wider contribution: An improved Soul Core method taught by Dugu Bo is later used by Yu Yuanzhen, who successfully condenses a core and advances to level 97 37 38.
Protective Soul Power
- Soul power barrier: Shields Yu Hengqing while crossing the poisonous miasma and approaching the well’s extreme cold 33 34.
- Limits: The barrier does not eliminate every hazard near the central pool; Yu Hengqing still needs martial soul possession to withstand the cold 34.
Equipment / Items / Resources
- Ruyi Treasure Bag — A blue storage pouch capable of holding living things. Dugu Bo gives it to Yu Hengqing with sealed poisons and medicinal herbs inside 29.
- Nine-Section Jade — A creature he keeps coiled around his hand and feeds dried mice 29.
- Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well — His medicinal resource site in the Sunset Forest, protected by poisonous miasma 33 34.
- Cultivated medicinal herbs — Grows valuable plants around the well’s outer edge, including Purple Vein Ginseng. Ordinary medicinal plants cannot withstand the energy concentration near its core 34.
Relationships
- Dugu Yan — Granddaughter and foremost concern. He arranges repeated sparring sessions to purge her toxins and expands her poison training once her condition improves 16 19 31.
- Unnamed son — Died from accumulated toxins; his death drives Dugu Bo’s determination to find a cure for the family 16 36.
- Yu Hengqing — Treatment partner, poison student, and recipient of his support. Their cooperation begins with Dugu Yan’s cleansing and develops into Poison Core research and access to the well 28 29 34.
- Yu Yuanzhen — Negotiating partner whose sarcasm and bargaining irritate him. Their cooperation secures Dugu Yan’s sparring arrangement and later helps transmit the improved Soul Core Method 16 19 37.
- Yu Hezai — Shares camp duties and watches over Yu Hengqing with him during the Thunder Valley training 28 30.
- Bi Ji — Her stated level-98 healing-type Titled Douluo strength intimidates him. He recognizes the significance of her healing abilities and the six-level gap between them 30.
Notable Quotes
“Yan-yan, the toxins in my body are not so easily cured. I want you to understand that sometimes, the greater the hope, the greater the disappointment.” 28
“If I were afraid of failure, I would never have cultivated to become a Title Douluo on my own, nor would I have endured so many years of torture!” 28
Trivia
- Dugu Bo coins the term “immortal herb” for the unusual plants growing near the well’s central pool, although his knowledge of their individual properties is limited 17 34.
- He does not bring Dugu Yan into the well because he fears accidental poisoning from its defensive miasma 33.
- On returning to the well, he notices its increased energy concentration but does not investigate further. He later leaves without noticing that several herbs are missing 36.
