Background

Xiao Wu and her mother, Xiao Rou, flee through the Star Dou Forest while pursued by powerful human soul masters. When Xiao Rou is overwhelmed, she throws Xiao Wu away so that her daughter can escape and survive. 83

Xiao Rou is later captured by the Great Ming Empire after Spirit Hall's pursuit is interrupted. Xu Nian'an coerces her cooperation by threatening Xiao Wu, then claims to have made Xiao Wu his goddaughter. 84 89 122

While studying at Nuoding Academy, Xiao Wu briefly reunites with her mother.
