Background / History
Rocks first boarded the Black Pearl intending to steal it. Magnus defeated him effortlessly, then chose to train him instead. Rocks accepted the arrangement because he wanted to learn the sea-splitting move he had witnessed, while privately vowing to surpass and repay Magnus for every blow he received. 2
Initially serving as the Black Pearl’s helmsman, Rocks defended the ship against Cassius’s attempted takeover. He endured Magnus’s harsh physical training for months, including being tied up and dragged through the sea, which drastically increased his stamina. 5 7 15
In Elbaf, Rocks fought Haierdin, the eldest son of King Harald. Rather than meeting the Giant head-on, he preserved his stamina, evaded Haierdin’s attacks, and used Soru to exploit an opening and win. The victory earned him the opportunity to study the Six Powers under Magnus. 15 16
Rocks continued training alongside Ripley and later Edward Newgate. He progressed rapidly through the Six Powers and Haki, but his proximity to veterans, Giants, and exceptional prodigies made him constantly aware of the gap he still needed to close. 30 49 69
Appearance
Rocks is a human man in his early twenties, standing under two meters tall. In contrast to Newgate’s massive build, he relies on speed, technique, and Haki rather than physical size. 38 167
- Early in his voyage, he was comparatively neat and refined, with a distinctive “D”-shaped smile. 5 167
- After leaving the White Wolf Pirates, rough travel and a prolonged period living in Margra’s sewers leave him bearded, unkempt, and ragged enough that people struggle to recognize him from his bounty poster. 167 187
- He keeps an ordinary, repeatedly repaired sword because it carries memories of his past. 96
Personality
Rocks is intensely ambitious and measures himself against the strongest people around him. His central goal is to surpass Magnus, first as a disciple and later as an independent pirate captain. He refuses to settle for safety or subordinate status when he believes greater strength is still possible. 2 149 155
He is cautious and adaptable in combat. Against Haierdin, he avoids a losing clash of strength; against injured CP0 agents, he uses hit-and-run tactics; and against Saint Kurt, he deliberately sacrifices his hearing to counter an ability based on spoken commands. 15 31 133
Despite his rough manner and self-serving rhetoric, Rocks possesses a personal sense of integrity. He leaves the White Wolf Pirates without taking his share of its money, considering it wrong to profit after Magnus trained and supported him. His time under Magnus also gradually makes him more attentive to civilians caught in larger conflicts, though he refuses to openly credit Magnus for the change. 155 209
Abilities & Skills
Haki
Rocks is proficient in all three forms of Haki and fights according to Magnus’s philosophy of developing one’s own body and will rather than depending on a Devil Fruit. He has no known Devil Fruit ability. 30 198
- Armament Haki — Reinforces his fists, fingers, and weapons; he used it in combat against Ripley and Marine Vice Admiral Honeydew. 31 57
- Observation Haki — Develops from an inconsistent early state into a mastered ability during his fight with Saint Kurt. It allows him to continue fighting effectively after disabling his own hearing. 69 135
- Conqueror’s Haki — Awakens during the Sabaody battle. By the Osgood Island conflict, he can combine his Conqueror’s Haki with Newgate’s to obstruct enemy teleportation. 135 212
- Limit: His advanced Haki applications, including Internal Destruction and Future Sight, remained beyond his grasp during his first clash with Glindwin. 167
Six Powers
Rocks learns the Six Powers under Magnus and incorporates them into a mobile close-quarters fighting style. 16 30
- Soru — His signature movement technique; enables sudden bursts of speed, evasions, and repositioning behind opponents. 15 41 135
- Iron Body — Used defensively to harden his body, though it proves ineffective against attacks far beyond his endurance, such as Ripley’s Haki-infused punch. 31
- Finger Pistol — Uses concentrated force in his fingers to strike opponents at close range. 38
- Iron Body Impact — Combines Iron Body with an offensive strike against Bennet of the Heart Pirates. 41
- Life Return — An ultimate Six Powers technique he comprehends after the Sabaody conflict, aiding his recovery from severe injuries. 149
Hand-to-Hand Combat and Swordsmanship
Rocks is primarily a physical fighter who supplements his strikes with Haki, Six Powers, and swordsmanship. He is capable of defeating opponents through direct combat even when outnumbered or facing Devil Fruit users. 41 115 198
- Defeated “Rock” Butler, despite Butler’s Devil Fruit powers, with swordsmanship and Haki. 115
- His ordinary short sword broke when it clashed with Saint Kurt’s Haki-enhanced staff. 135
- Later wielded a long sword capable of firing a cannon-like slash powerful enough to send Kong flying thousands of meters. 210
- Limit: His stamina can be depleted by extended battles; after defeating Bennet, he was unable to continue fighting until Magnus intervened. 42
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Frost Hide — A repeatedly repaired ordinary sword that Rocks retains for sentimental reasons; it was later broken in battle against Saint Kurt. 96 135
- Ship from the Kingdom of Margra — Granted to him after the kingdom mistook him for a representative of the White Wolf Pirates. 167
Relationships
- Magnus — Mentor, former captain, and ultimate rival. Magnus trained Rocks from the moment they met, promoted him to official crew member, and accepted his departure with the promise of a future challenge. 2 104 149
- Edward Newgate — Former fellow trainee and close combat partner. Rocks initially overwhelmed Newgate, later fought beside him repeatedly, but their bond became strained after Rocks left the White Wolf Pirates; Newgate eventually defeated him in a fight and rejected recruitment into the Rocks Pirates. 38 41 150 187
- Ripley — Fellow White Wolf Pirate and training rival. Ripley’s overwhelming strength and Mini Fruit abilities repeatedly pushed Rocks to improve his Haki and fighting style. 31 95 96
- Barbaric — First major recruit of the Rocks Pirates. Barbaric can see into people’s hearts; although he initially reported Rocks to local authorities, he later helped him escape Glindwin and remained with the crew. 167
- Shiki — A younger pirate associated with the White Wolf Pirates who later supports Rocks at Osgood Island. Rocks views him as useful but cautions him against relying too heavily on his Devil Fruit. 208 210
- Gol D. Roger — Rival and occasional ally. Their crews developed a feud after mutual ship damage and retaliation, but Roger saved Rocks during the first Osgood Island operation; they later cooperated during the second infiltration. 197 205 208
- Glindwin — CP0’s highest-ranking operational officer and a major obstacle in Rocks’s independent journey. Glindwin initially defeated Rocks in Margra, but Rocks later overcame a senior CP Organization opponent and rose sharply in reputation. 167 171
