Background / History

Naraku was found as a newborn among the ruins of the Land of Whirlpools by Minato Namikaze and Kushina Uzumaki. His red hair resonated with Kushina's Uzumaki bloodline, but the Uchiha fan crest on his swaddling clothes led Minato and Fugaku to suspect he possessed both Uzumaki and Uchiha ancestry. The matter was kept secret, and Kushina came to regard him as her own younger brother. 11

At five years old, Naraku was already close to Kakashi through Minato's household. He also retained familiarity with Kakashi from a past life, having been a fan of him before arriving in the shinobi world. 1 Minato encouraged his training by giving him chakra-refinement materials, and Naraku immediately demonstrated exceptional chakra control. 3

During the Nine-Tails crisis, Naraku exhausted himself restoring Kushina's vitality and awakened the Sharingan. Kakashi and Guy later evacuated the unconscious Naraku alongside Naruto on Kushina's orders. 11

Following Minato's death and Kushina's hospitalization, Naraku devoted himself to sealing techniques, ninjutsu, and the Sharingan. He deliberately avoided becoming dependent on his sensory ability, treating it as a tool rather than a substitute for vigilance. 16 22

Personality

Naraku is calculating, curious, and intensely focused on growth. He studies enemy techniques in combat, infiltrates political targets for information, and makes long-term plans around threats such as Akatsuki, Obito, and the Tailed Beasts. 53 54 424

He is cautious even when overwhelmingly stronger than an opponent. Naraku allowed Nakashita So to activate the Spirit Sealing Prohibition because he wanted to understand the forbidden technique, yet remained prepared to break free at any time. 47 He also chose not to kill Obito during one encounter, believing stronger enemies would force others around him to grow. 258

Naraku can be ruthless toward those he considers genuine threats. He killed the Land of Fire's daimyo after the latter attempted to remove Tsunade as Hokage, purged the daimyo's old subordinates, and installed Yutian as a more cooperative replacement. 289 However, he does not treat every opponent as an enemy; he spared Root members from the Nara and Akimichi clans when he judged that they lacked murderous intent. 59

His ambition is rooted partly in protecting those close to him. He repeatedly acts for Kushina's safety, entrusts Naruto and Haku to Tsunade when pursuing Obito, and seeks greater strength so he can protect Konoha against future Six Paths- and Ōtsutsuki-level threats. 99 424
