Background / History

Konoha and Defection

Orochimaru grew up in Konoha and lost both parents while young. A disciple of the Third Hokage, he became one of the Sannin alongside Jiraiya and Tsunade and earned recognition as a village hero through his contributions during the Third Shinobi World War 39 45 68.

He remains a Konoha shinobi at his first appearance, reuniting with Jiraiya and Tsunade at the former Senju residence. Their reunion is familiar rather than hostile, and his bond with Jiraiya is still strong 4.

The Third Hokage later confronts him over prohibited research. Orochimaru rejects remaining in what he calls a “rotting Konoha,” and Hiruzen allows him to escape despite Enma’s objections. He is subsequently declared an S-rank missing-nin, with the Anbu ordered to retrieve him because of the village secrets he possesses 39.

During the pursuit, Orochimaru fights Naraku and injures Yamato. He leaves an Earth Clone to receive Naraku’s fire attack and escapes 41.

Bloodline Research and Kimimaro

In the Kaguya clan’s territory, Orochimaru proposes a transaction involving a Sharingan eye, treatment of bloodline disease, and a possible solution to Naraku’s Mangekyō Sharingan side effects. Underground records and imagery deepen his interest in the ancestry connecting powerful bloodline clans 86 87 88.

He subsequently works to treat Kimimaro’s bloodline disease and prepare him as a vessel. Kimimaro’s reduced pain and improved Shikotsumyaku suggest that the treatment has some effect. Orochimaru also envies Jugo’s natural ability to sense and absorb natural energy 125.

After Kimimaro qualifies for Sage Mode training, Orochimaru accelerates his experiments. His projects include Sharingan eyes and blood from creatures cultivated using First Hokage cells 173.

By the time he returns to an abandoned laboratory near Sunagakure, he has taken over Kimimaro’s body. He tests his newly acquired bone powers against a berserk Jugo before resuming work underground 227.

Life-Force Experiments and Kabuto

Orochimaru obtains One’s Own Life Reincarnation from Chiyo and spares her after she cooperates. He then spends more than a month adapting the technique: repeated transfers consume his vitality and age him, but he eventually succeeds in taking a white snake’s life force into his own body 233 234 235.

Seeking an assistant, he returns to Konoha for Kabuto Yakushi, a talent he had identified earlier. Jiraiya and Tsunade allow Kabuto to leave after recognizing that his loyalty already lies with Orochimaru 242 244.

Fifth Kazekage

Orochimaru demands leadership of Sunagakure, threatening Chiyo and killing several shinobi. Under pressure from Konoha’s impending invasion, Chiyo and Ebizo eventually agree to his succession on conditions, including that he resist Konoha’s attempt to make the Land of Wind a vassal 268 285.

He completes the succession ceremony under Kimimaro’s name. Orochimaru views the coming war as an opportunity to earn the villagers’ trust and bring Sunagakure fully under his control. His successful resistance to Kakashi raises his reputation, and many villagers regard their new Kazekage as a savior 290 291 323.

When Naraku joins Jiraiya and Kakashi, Orochimaru deploys reincarnated predecessors against them. He ultimately decides that preserving Sunagakure is not worth risking his life or losing control of the First Hokage. He withdraws with Hashirama, leaving the villagers in despair 325 330 332.

Alliance with Zetsu and Akatsuki

After his retreat, Orochimaru works with Kabuto near Amegakure on a body intended to withstand the Rinnegan. Zetsu later proposes a broader alliance against Konoha and Obito. Orochimaru initially prefers undisturbed research, but accepts when offered access to the Sage of Six Paths’ bloodline 356 384.

Speaking through the reincarnated Second Tsuchikage, Mū, he negotiates with Ōnoki and obtains the Dust Release training method. He later abandons his promise to help defend Iwagakure, judging the village’s defeat inevitable and its usefulness exhausted 445 446 466.

His subsequent cooperation with Akatsuki includes helping secure the Four-Tails and abducting Killer B, the Eight-Tails jinchūriki. Neither Obito nor Zetsu fully trusts him, and Obito removes Killer B from his custody 491 521 522.

Orochimaru later attacks Itachi while investigating whether his Sharingan could grant control of the Totsuka Blade. Naraku and Shisui intervene, and Naraku proves faster and stronger than Orochimaru’s enhanced body. Orochimaru eventually retreats from the confrontation 525 527 531.

Appearance

  • Original body: Long black hair, pale skin, narrow eyes, pale golden pupils, and a cold, sinister presence 4 68.
  • Kimimaro’s body: A youthful, white-haired appearance; later descriptions include pale pupils and two red cinnabar markings on his forehead 242 290 356 522.
  • Active Byakugan: Prominent veins appear around his eyes 291 527.
  • Sage Mode: Golden markings surround his eyes, and antler-like horns grow from his head 302.
  • Bone armor: Can cover himself in hundreds of projecting bones, producing a hedgehog-like defensive form 304.

Personality

Orochimaru’s pursuit of immortality drives both his research and his willingness to cross ethical boundaries. He experiments with bodies, bloodlines, souls, and life force, even pushing his own body toward death while developing a way to steal vitality 39 234 384.

Despite his ambition, he is pragmatic about survival. He avoids clashes that would interrupt his plans, withdraws when Sunagakure becomes too costly to defend, and abandons alliances once their benefits are exhausted. He explicitly regards even Kabuto, Karin, and Jugo as people retained for their usefulness 330 332 466 491.

He values evidence over accepted explanations. After secretly studying Nagato’s blood and finding only Uzumaki ancestry, he rejects the claim that Nagato naturally awakened the Rinnegan overnight 384.

His coldness coexists with personal charisma and traces of nostalgia. Tsunade considers him exceptionally effective at winning lasting loyalty, while encounters with Jiraiya still evoke memories of their shared past 68 244. He also revises his judgments when confronted with genuine achievement: Kakashi progresses in his estimation from a talented junior to someone whose potential might exceed both his own and Naraku’s 66 480.

Abilities & Skills

Forbidden-Jutsu Research

  • Develops numerous forbidden techniques and is described as an exceptional practitioner of ninjutsu creation and mastery 233.
  • Studies Sharingan, First Hokage cells, Uzumaki physiology, clan ancestry, and bodies capable of bearing the Rinnegan 173 245 356 384.
  • Earns the Second Hokage’s recognition for research talent comparable to his own 514.
  • Obtains the Dust Release training method, but the supplied chapters do not establish that he masters it 446.
  • Remains unable to master the Flying Thunder God Technique despite his ninjutsu talent 233 480.

Living Corpse Reincarnation

  • Transfers his soul into another body; successfully takes Kimimaro’s body and its Shikotsumyaku 227 514.
  • The transfer damages his soul or mental strength, a weakness later overcome through life-force theft 233 290.
  • Combined with his modified life-force technique, achieves immortality “in another sense”; his body still ages, potentially requiring replacement every few decades 384.

Life-Stealing Hand

  • Derived from Chiyo’s One’s Own Life Reincarnation, which originally transfers the user’s vitality to another living being 234 290.
  • Uses black matter created by sacrificing his own life force to make contact with and seize another creature’s vitality 234.
  • Restores youth, vitality, and mental strength damaged by reincarnation 235 290.
  • Eventually strengthens his soul enough that Itachi’s Tsukuyomi cannot keep him suppressed 525.

Shikotsumyaku and Soft-Body Modification

  • Controls bone-producing and bone-breaking cells, along with calcium concentration, to create bones stronger than steel 227.
  • Produces bone blades, finger bullets, whips, spears, armor, and skeletal snakes 227 304 525.
  • Combines bone hardness with self-created soft-body modifications, allowing him to twist and stretch while controlling his body’s rigidity 300 301.
  • Benefits from Kimimaro’s innate healing abilities 233.
  • His bones are not indestructible: Naraku shatters blades that had been capable of breaking a crimson Susanoo 527.

Byakugan

  • Possesses a complete 360-degree field of vision without blind spots 301 527.
  • Inspects chakra flow and identifies Kakashi’s Eight Trigrams Seal 300.
  • Scans the surrounding terrain to locate White Zetsu clones 291.
  • Seals Gaara’s chakra points to interfere with the One-Tail drawing chakra 282.
  • Seeing an attack does not guarantee avoiding it; his body cannot keep pace with Naraku’s later movements 527.

Ryūchi Cave Sage Mode

  • Enhances his physical abilities, including speed, strength, and bone defenses 302 304.
  • Moves fast enough that Kakashi initially sees only a white blur despite using the Sharingan 302.
  • Breaks through Kakashi’s Lightning Armor and injures his chest 302.
  • Uses the transformation to interrupt Naraku’s attempt to seal the First Hokage 331 332.

Impure World Reincarnation

  • Reanimates and controls deceased shinobi, including Tobirama, Hashirama, Mū, the Third Raikage, and the Second Mizukage 126 330 445 491.
  • Uses their abilities rather than possessing those bloodlines himself; controlled Hashirama supplies Wood Release and can activate Sage Mode 330 528.
  • Selects White Zetsu clones as especially suitable sacrifices 291.
  • The sacrificial body limits how much of a revived shinobi’s original power can be expressed 323.
  • Dividing his attention between personal combat and controlling Hashirama restricts his own performance; excessive power also risks loss of control 330.
  • Powerful barriers can weaken his connection to a reincarnated subject 340.

Snake Techniques, Substitution, and Elemental Ninjutsu

  • Hidden Shadow Snake Hands: Releases venomous snakes from his sleeves; later adapts the attack into Hidden Shadow Bone Snakes 66 236.
  • Evil Snake Wrist Explosion: Surrounds a target with giant snakes and detonates them 41.
  • Summoning: Calls giant snakes, including Manda, for combat support 66 122.
  • Orochimaru-Style Substitution: Emerges from his discarded body without hand seals, escaping otherwise severe damage 66 302.
  • Wind Release: Great Breakthrough: Disperses Naraku’s fire attacks and later counters Shukaku’s air projectiles with his strengthened body 40 64 283.
  • Earth Release: Uses Earth Clones, underground movement, and earthen walls for evasion and defense 41 126 325.
  • Snake messengers: Sends orders to followers and requests assistance from Zetsu 45 473.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Kusanagi Sword — Drawn from his throat and coated with wind-nature chakra; superior to Naraku’s early metal sword 64 66 122.
  • One’s Own Life Reincarnation scroll — Obtained from Chiyo and used as the foundation for his life-force research 233 234.
  • Dust Release training method — Acquired from Ōnoki through negotiations conducted using Mū’s reincarnated body 445 446.
  • Underground laboratories — Maintains research facilities near Sunagakure and Amegakure 234 290 356.
  • White Zetsu specimens — Used in biological research and as sacrifices for Impure World Reincarnation 291 356.

Relationships

  • Jiraiya — Childhood companion and fellow Sannin. Their shared history repeatedly makes Jiraiya reluctant to capture or fight him, but their opposing goals prevent reconciliation 68 242 332.
  • Tsunade — Fellow Sannin who understands his charisma and methods. As Hokage, she refuses to let their former bond obstruct her campaign against him 244 291 531.
  • Hiruzen Sarutobi — Former teacher. Hiruzen condemns his research but hesitates to stop him personally, allowing his escape before ordering pursuit 39.
  • Naraku Uzumaki — Martial nephew through Jiraiya, not an established blood relative. Orochimaru repeatedly tests his growth, later recognizing him as a serious threat 323 324 384 531.
  • Kimimaro — Pupil and intended vessel. Orochimaru treats his bloodline disease, encourages his Sage Mode qualification, and ultimately takes his body 125 173 227.
  • Kabuto Yakushi — Research assistant and devoted follower. Kabuto adopts Orochimaru’s experimental ambitions and secretly pursues related research 242 244 245 291.
  • Karin Uzumaki — Taken into his laboratory network. She recognizes his aura despite his changed body, and her blood becomes research material 227 245 262.
  • Jugo — Research subject and subordinate whose natural-energy absorption attracts Orochimaru’s envy; also used to test a white bone snake 125 227.
  • Chiyo — Source of One’s Own Life Reincarnation and reluctant political partner during his Kazekage succession 233 285.
  • Zetsu — Transactional ally who supplies research opportunities and coordinates assistance. Access to the Sage of Six Paths’ bloodline persuades Orochimaru to accept renewed conflict with Konoha 384 473.
  • Obito Uchiha — Distrustful ally in Akatsuki’s operations. Both regard the partnership as useful rather than secure 491 521 522.
  • Kakashi Hatake — Recurring opponent whose space-time mastery provokes envy. Orochimaru later considers his talent potentially greater than his own 301 480.
  • Itachi Uchiha — Targeted for his Sharingan and its possible connection to the Totsuka Blade; his Tsukuyomi fails to suppress Orochimaru for long 525.
  • Nakashita So — Fanatical follower who captures former comrades to offer as research subjects 45.
  • Nawaki — Former disciple whose loyalty to Orochimaru, according to Tsunade, exceeded his willingness to listen to his own sister 244.
