Background / History

Following Root's attempted abduction of Uchiha Shingetsu, Fugaku personally questioned the injured nine-year-old in the clan hospital. He recognized the attackers' likely connection to Root, relocated Shingetsu to the inner clan grounds, and arranged protection for him. He also began treating Shingetsu as a valuable but vulnerable member of the clan rather than merely an orphan. 4 5

Fugaku initially responded to the escalating conflict with caution. He permitted Shingetsu to address the clan meeting but struggled to contain the anger of clansmen who saw the attack as proof that Konoha regarded the Uchiha as experimental material. He supported increased security and a public investigation while warning the clan against acting without orders or provoking Konoha recklessly. 11 13

As evidence of Root's infiltration accumulated, Fugaku became increasingly assertive. After the discovery of a long-used secret tunnel near the clan grounds, he preserved the scene rather than destroying it, then demanded a joint Uchiha–Anbu investigation recorded in full. This denied Konoha's leadership an easy opportunity to accuse the Uchiha of tampering with evidence. 24 25

He protected Shingetsu from being turned into a political figurehead when Uchiha Shinsuke attempted to promote the child as a replacement “voice” for the clan. Once Root ties were exposed, Fugaku ordered Shinsuke's arrest, investigation, and isolation, while publicly declaring that Shingetsu was the clan's future—not a tool to be pushed to the front lines. 35 36

Fugaku later authorized an operation to capture the External Liaison Office messenger connected to Root's manipulation. He personally stationed himself outside the clan grounds while Shisui, Tekka, Inabi, and Yashiro sealed the escape routes, ensuring that Shingetsu's bait operation had support and containment. 39

After the Night Owl Plan and Root's Sharingan collection were exposed, Fugaku confronted Konoha's leadership and demanded Danzo's public arrest, the return of Uchiha Sharingan, an investigation of Root facilities, and joint interrogation rights for the Police Force. 47 52

When Shingetsu exposed Black Zetsu's alteration of the Uchiha Stone Tablet, Fugaku demanded proof before accepting the claim. Once the evidence was established, he agreed to seal the tablet and preserve the truth of its manipulation as a high-level clan secret. 56 57

During later attempts to exploit the Uchiha's sealed archives and old internal grievances, Fugaku coordinated the clan's response, established barriers against Black Zetsu fragments, confronted elder Cang Jie, and remained above ground to maintain order while entrusting Shingetsu with the underground operation. 126 127 128 130

Appearance

Fugaku is a middle-aged Uchiha man whose presence is described as stern and oppressive even without his Sharingan active. 4

  • Short black hair. 4
  • Stern facial features and an authoritative demeanor. 4
  • Wears dark Uchiha clan attire. 4
  • Possesses the Mangekyo Sharingan. 4

Personality

Fugaku is restrained, observant, and politically cautious. Rather than reacting impulsively to provocations against the Uchiha, he weighs how the Hokage's office, Root, and radical elements within his own clan could exploit any response. His handling of the secret tunnel investigation—securing the evidence instead of storming it—reflects this discipline. 24 25

He is also deeply protective of the clan's younger generation, particularly his sons and Shingetsu. He recognizes Shingetsu's potential but repeatedly tries to keep him from being used as bait, a symbol, or a disposable weapon. 7 8 36

Over time, Fugaku becomes more willing to challenge old Uchiha customs and Konoha's authority when secrecy itself becomes a weapon against the clan. He authorizes public access to Naka Shrine and supports disclosing the Stone Tablet's corrupted conclusion, prioritizing the clan's survival over tradition. 89 90 95
