Background / History

Orochimaru was Sarutobi Hiruzen’s student and a teammate of Tsunade and Jiraiya. Hiruzen praised him as a genius seen only once in several decades. He became one of Konoha’s legendary Sannin and competed with Namikaze Minato for the Hokage position. During the Third Shinobi World War, he repeatedly fought Rasa without either gaining a decisive advantage 13 16 40.

His ambition was to learn every ninjutsu and become stronger than anyone else. Records of Hashirama and Madara’s power convinced him that ordinary bloodlines imposed limits that training alone could not overcome. He developed Living Corpse Reincarnation to obtain immortality and acquire stronger vessels, particularly bodies with bloodline abilities 40 41.

Orochimaru studied Tobirama’s forbidden-technique records and conducted human experimentation. With Danzo, he researched Wood Release in hopes of creating another First Hokage as a vessel. Most subjects could not withstand Hashirama Cells; the sole successful subject still fell far short of his goal. He also failed to master Ryūchi Cave’s sage arts because the White Snake Sage judged his mortal body incapable of bearing perfect sage chakra 13 40 41.

Planning the Konoha Crush

Danzo approaches Orochimaru with a renewed Konoha Crush Plan, arguing that Hiruzen no longer has Minato to support him. Orochimaru subsequently visits Sunagakure and exploits its declining funding and loss of missions to Konoha. Rasa agrees to cooperate if the Uchiha can be persuaded to participate 13 16 17.

Orochimaru suspects that Rasa accepted too readily, but dismisses his unease as paranoia. Unknown to him, Yan is observing events from behind the scenes 17.

Chunin Exam Attack

Konoha receives warning signs of Orochimaru’s return, but Hiruzen continues the Chunin Exams with heightened security and summons Jiraiya. Before the finals, Orochimaru kills Rasa and attends in his place 26 27 28 31.

When the attack begins, Orochimaru takes Hiruzen hostage and moves their confrontation to a rooftop enclosed by his subordinates’ barrier. He summons Hashirama and Tobirama and initially overwhelms his former teacher. Hiruzen seals the reanimated Hokages’ souls, then seals Orochimaru’s arms before dying from his wounds. Orochimaru escapes with his subordinates 31 32 33 36 37.

Capture and Public Execution

Yan tracks Orochimaru shortly after his escape. Orochimaru sends his subordinates away and pretends to surrender before attempting to seize Yan’s body through a Cursed Seal. Yan reveals that the entire attack was an illusion, seals his chakra, and brings him back alive 40 41.

His imprisonment in the Military Police prison becomes a point of conflict between the Uchiha and Konoha’s advisors. Yan also uses the capture to build public support for himself and the clan 42 43 46.

Before his execution, Orochimaru argues that the plan succeeded because Hiruzen’s death broke Konoha’s political stagnation. Yan acknowledges that they both benefited, but publicly condemns and beheads him. The execution consolidates support for Yan’s leadership as Konoha mobilizes for war 58 59.

Resurrection and Laboratory Work

Yan revives Orochimaru from Anko’s Cursed Seal and decides that his knowledge is more useful than another immediate execution. In exchange for access to Ryūchi Cave and Cursed Seal research, Yan offers a method to recover his sealed arms 87 88.
