Shisui’s Mangekyō Sharingan acquired 6 Tears out one of Shisui’s eyes to replace his blinded implanted Sharingan, which previously belonged to Uchiha Kagami. He later sacrifices Shisui’s eye to activate Izanagi against Yan 8 10.

Background / History

Formation of Root

After Senju Tobirama’s death, Konoha’s major clans placed their own personnel within Anbu, undermining the newly appointed Hiruzen’s authority. Danzo, Hiruzen, and other emerging leaders responded by establishing Root: orphans with clean backgrounds underwent brutal conditioning, while members of their own clans supplied additional manpower 10.

Hiruzen eventually reclaimed Anbu, while Danzo retained Root and performed work the Hokage could not openly acknowledge. Their partnership combined political cooperation with Danzo’s continuing desire to become Hokage himself 9 10.

Suppression of Political Rivals

Danzo continued Tobirama’s hostile policy toward the Uchiha. His targeting of the clan intensified after Kagami’s unexpected death, and he later drove their relocation to Konoha’s outskirts, where both Root and Anbu monitored them 29 30.

He also sought to disqualify Hatake Sakumo from contention for Hokage. A report in Danzo’s handwriting identified twenty-three supporting jōnin, warned that Sakumo’s samurai background could disrupt Konoha’s established power structure, and raised the possibility of his alignment with the Uchiha. Root then orchestrated public condemnation over Sakumo’s failed mission. According to Yan’s explanation, Danzo intended to ruin Sakumo’s reputation rather than cause his death, but failed to account for his attachment to honor 11.

Taking Shisui’s Eye

Shisui approached Danzo with a proposal to use Kotoamatsukami on Uchiha leadership to prevent a coup. Rather than trust him, Danzo questioned whether Shisui might eventually turn the technique against him and attempted to seize his eyes 6.

Shisui initially immobilized him with a basic genjutsu, but Danzo recovered, struck him, and tore out one Sharingan. He replaced his blinded Kagami eye with it, while Shisui escaped and was pursued by Root. Danzo subsequently berated the operatives who failed to capture the wounded Uchiha 6 7 8.

Manipulation and the Coup Plot

Yan infiltrated Root disguised as an operative, accompanied by shadow clones. After Danzo dispatched most of his personnel to find Shisui, Yan stabbed him through the heart. Danzo survived through Izanagi, sacrificing Shisui’s eye, but Yan isolated their ensuing fight inside a barrier that concealed sound, sight, and chakra 8 10.

When his Izanagi approached its limit, Danzo offered concessions involving Uchiha surveillance and Fugaku’s appointment as an advisor. Yan instead used Kotoamatsukami to amplify his ambition: Danzo would now remove Hiruzen and seize the Hokage position before dealing with the Uchiha. Yan also sealed his memories and implanted false information 9.

Believing Anbu had attacked him, Danzo suspected Hiruzen and ordered a probing assassination attempt. After it failed, he contacted Orochimaru and proposed overthrowing Konoha’s leadership. They divided recruitment duties: Danzo would approach the Uchiha, while Orochimaru would enlist Sunagakure 10 12 13.

Danzo secretly visited the Uchiha compound and later recommended Fugaku for the advisory council as proof of cooperation. Hiruzen rejected the recommendation, angering Danzo by invoking his authority as Hokage rather than debating the proposal 15 16 17 18.

Death and the “Suicide” Narrative

During the Konoha Crush attack, Danzo kept Root on standby while Hiruzen fought Orochimaru and the reanimated Hokage. He claimed this preserved Konoha’s elite forces and protected its future, while openly expressing hope for Hiruzen’s death 33 34.

Yan approached him disguised as a trusted aide and pierced his heart. With his body immobilized and chakra completely sealed, Danzo could not activate the sealing technique he intended to use for mutual destruction. Yan then subjected him to Tsukuyomi, imposing three perceived days and nights of repeated stabbing with tenfold pain sensitivity, before collecting his corpse 34.

Danzo’s apparent activities after this point were impersonations. Yan’s shadow clone appeared as him during the struggle over emergency command; the later “Danzo” who confronted Homura and Koharu revealed Yan’s younger appearance beneath the disguise 39 50 51.

His corpse was subsequently displayed at Root headquarters beside a purported suicide note in his handwriting. The note blamed him for Shisui and Itachi’s deaths and the advisers’ murders. Shikaku recognized evidence of manipulation but publicly endorsed the account, helping legitimize the Uchiha takeover. Yan, not Danzo, had actually killed Shisui and Itachi 7 52 53 54.

Appearance

  • Uses a cane when walking and issuing commands 6 8 13.
  • Keeps his implanted right Sharingan concealed beneath bandages 6.
  • Has a bandage-wrapped right arm, which hangs limply beside his chair when his corpse is discovered 52.

Personality

Danzo is authoritarian and ruthless toward his subordinates. He reprimands Fu over losses caused by his own surveillance policy, calls failed operatives “trash,” and treats Root members as expendable instruments. Shisui’s submission pleases him even while he despises the Uchiha 3 4 7.

His ambition predates Yan’s manipulation. Kotoamatsukami amplifies that existing desire and changes the order of his objectives rather than creating an entirely new goal. He willingly abandons pride when cooperation with the Uchiha serves his interests, repeatedly presenting personal political maneuvers as actions taken “for Konoha” 9 18.

Danzo’s confidence often exceeds his actual control. He expects reinforcements during a battle concealed by Yan’s barrier and later declares everything under control immediately before being attacked by his supposed aide 8 34.

Abilities & Skills

Izanagi

Danzo uses Izanagi to survive a lethal stab and reappear behind his attacker 8.

  • Its active duration is approximately one minute 8 9.
  • Activation costs him a Sharingan; the eye taken from Shisui is expended during Yan’s first infiltration 8 10.
  • Yan’s killing system still grants a reward for the lethal strike despite Danzo’s survival 8.

Wind Release

  • Wind Release: Vacuum Bullets — Expels a series of transparent air projectiles from his mouth 8.
  • Yan evades the technique using his three-tomoe Sharingan’s dynamic vision 8.
  • Wind Release Mastery appears among the system’s available rewards after Danzo’s final death 34.

Implanted Sharingan and Hashirama Cells

  • Possesses an implanted Sharingan belonging to Kagami before replacing it with Shisui’s eye 6.
  • Carries Hashirama cells, confirmed by the rewards offered after Yan’s attacks 8 34.
  • Participated in Wood Release research with Orochimaru, whose objective was to create a powerful vessel resembling the First Hokage 41.
  • Although he acquires Shisui’s eye, no successful use of Kotoamatsukami by Danzo is documented before he sacrifices it 6 8 10.

Sealing Technique

  • Attempts to activate an unnamed sealing jutsu to take Yan down with him 34.
  • Cannot execute it because his chakra has already been completely sealed 34.

Covert Operations and Political Manipulation

  • Directs Root surveillance, pursuit missions, assassinations, and propaganda campaigns 3 8 10 11.
  • Maintains covert contact with Orochimaru after his defection 13.
  • Keeps archives documenting secret dealings with Kumogakure and the operation against Sakumo; the recovered files bear Hiruzen’s personal seal 9.

  • Uchiha Yan — Enemy who manipulates his priorities, kills him, and uses his identity and death to facilitate the Uchiha rise to power 9 34 39 54.
  • Uchiha Shisui — Initially a cooperative informant; Danzo distrusts his ocular technique, steals his eye, and orders Root to pursue him 4 6 8.
  • Uchiha Kagami — Previous owner of Danzo’s implanted right Sharingan 6.
  • Yamanaka Fu — Root subordinate reprimanded over missing operatives; killed by Yan to prevent him from detecting Danzo’s altered condition 3 9.
  • Orochimaru — Research collaborator and later partner in the Konoha Crush plot 13 41.
