Background

Yan was orphaned when his parents died in the war. Izumi's family supported him until he could complete missions independently. He was cultivated by the Uchiha Hawk Faction from childhood and became known as an exceptional prodigy, mastering Fire Release, Scorch Release, and the Three-Tomoe Sharingan at unusually young ages. 1

A year before the story begins, upon reaching adulthood, Yan recovered memories of a past life as a transmigrator and awakened the Killing System. The system grants him a choice of rewards for killing ninja, samurai, or summoning beasts. He retained his Hawk allegiance, believing that openly abandoning the faction would make him a target for elimination by both clan hardliners and Konoha's leadership. 1

Yan killed Root operatives operating against the Uchiha, dissolved their bodies with Corpse-Dissolving Powder, and concealed the sites beneath flowers planted in the Uchiha compound. His early actions drew Danzo's suspicion while remaining difficult to expose publicly. 1 3

After the Konoha Crush and Sarutobi Hiruzen's death, Yan exploited the resulting political vacuum to eliminate Danzo and Konoha's two senior advisers. He framed Danzo for the deaths of Shisui, Itachi, Homura, and Koharu, consolidating the Uchiha's control over Konoha before becoming its Fifth Hokage. 51 54 79

Appearance

Yan is a male Uchiha shinobi who commonly wears Konoha Military Police Force gear while on patrol. 1

  • Possesses scarlet Three-Tomoe Sharingan eyes when activated. 2
  • Possesses Mangekyō Sharingan, which he can use without apparent visual deterioration due to the Hashirama Cells in his body. 60 92
  • Carries standard shinobi tools, including kunai, shuriken, sealing scrolls, and a baton. 1 4 8
  • Uses the Uchiha clan crest attire while acting on behalf of the clan. 39
  • Wore traditional Uchiha attire while addressing Konoha's citizens and declaring the beginning of the Uchiha-led new era. 57

Personality

Yan is ruthless, calculating, and intensely loyal to the Uchiha clan—particularly to the ordinary clan members and followers he believes Konoha's leadership would sacrifice. He rejects compromises framed as peace or stability when they leave the Uchiha vulnerable, and he considers divided loyalty to be betrayal. 3 7 29

He thinks several moves ahead, manipulating both enemies and allies to strengthen the Uchiha's position. He forged suicide notes to conceal Shisui and Itachi's deaths, infiltrated Root through a Shadow Clone, altered Danzo with Kotoamatsukami, and falsely performed a search for the people he had killed. 8 9 21 22

After seizing power in Konoha, Yan became increasingly authoritarian and pragmatic. He values loyalty above competence, purges disloyal subordinates, uses propaganda and genjutsu to mobilize the public, and is willing to provoke wars, assassinate political opponents, and disregard established shinobi conventions to expand Konoha and the Uchiha clan's power. 56 57 67 86

Despite his brutality, Yan displays genuine care toward Izumi, Kurenai, his subordinates, and Konoha civilians. He comforts Izumi during clan tensions, takes care of Kurenai when she is drunk, directs Uchiha members to treat injured civilians, and intervenes against foreign ninja extorting villagers. 4 6 22 35

As Hokage, he also provides generous compensation to casualties of the Sunagakure campaign, distributes advanced ninjutsu to civilian ninja, and promotes capable or loyal subordinates such as Nara Shingetsu. These measures simultaneously strengthen Konoha, cultivate public support, and bind beneficiaries to his administration. 65 67 95

Abilities & Skills

Sharingan and Genjutsu

Yan's Three-Tomoe Sharingan grants ocular power described by Itachi as the most terrifying he has encountered. He can subdue opponents with a glance and use genjutsu to dominate stronger political and military figures. 2 3 4

  • Placed an Anbu operative under genjutsu after making eye contact. 2
  • Overwhelmed Itachi's Three-Tomoe Sharingan and trapped him in genjutsu. 3

  • Sealed Danzo's memories and implanted false information to conceal Yan's actions. 9
  • Was originally considered by Shisui as a means to control both Fugaku and Yan. 6

Sage Mode, Hashirama Cells, and Tailed Beast Chakra

Yan possesses Hashirama Cells and has mastered Ryūchi Cave senjutsu. The cells protect him from the usual strain of the Mangekyō Sharingan and moderated the dangerous natural energy he absorbed while learning Sage Mode. 8 92 93

  • Can fuse Ryūchi Cave senjutsu with the Yin Nine-Tails' chakra, producing an aura that intimidated the White Snake Sage and the Three Snake Princesses. 93

  • Employed Shuriken Shadow Clone Technique against Obito. 4
  • Prepared and deployed the Barrier: Silent Lotus Formation, which obscures activity and chakra within its confines. 8
  • Infiltrated Root headquarters with a Shadow Clone and exploited Danzo's Izanagi duration. 8
  • Captured Orochimaru alive after the Konoha Crush and returned him to Konoha as a political statement. 40 41 42
  • Led Konoha's elite forces through the Death Desert, bypassed Sunagakure's border defenses, and conducted a successful decapitation campaign against the village. 60 61
  • Killed the Fourth Raikage and his guards during the Three Kage summit, then forced Ōnoki and Mifune into granting compensation to Konoha. 97 98

Yan acquired sensory capabilities after killing Yamanaka Fu. 9

  • Eliminated Fu specifically because the sensory ninja could detect irregularities in Danzo after Yan's manipulation. 9
  • Selected medical ninjutsu from C's Killing System rewards after defeating the Kumogakure sensory ninja. 98
  • His Sage Mode provides sensory perception surpassing the sensory ability he previously acquired from Fu. 97 98

Yan awakens his memories and the Killing System, kills a Root elite, and chooses an Earth Release chakra fragment. He resumes Military Police work with Izumi while covertly defending the Hawk Faction's interests. 1

Conflicts with Konoha and the Uchiha Loyalists

Yan intervenes in Naruto's mistreatment, intimidates Anbu, and clashes with Itachi over the jinchuriki and the Uchiha's relationship with Konoha. He defeats Itachi in genjutsu and becomes a major concern to Hiruzen. 2 3 4

Defeat of “Madara”

After recognizing Obito's false Madara identity, Yan challenges him in the Forest of Death. He wins the battle, leaving Obito blinded and badly injured, then gains Kamui through the Killing System. 4 5

Elimination of Shisui and Itachi

Yan kills Shisui after the latter entrusts an eye to Itachi, then kills Itachi and takes both men's Sharingan. He gains Kotoamatsukami and the Totsuka Blade and Yata Mirror, then begins a coup by eliminating Root surveillance around the Uchiha compound. 7

Root Infiltration and Danzo's Manipulation

Yan uses a Shadow Clone to enter Root headquarters, attacks Danzo inside a sealing barrier, then uses Kotoamatsukami to reshape Danzo's goals and memories. He retrieves Root files and kills Yamanaka Fu to avoid exposure. 8 9

Seizure of the Hawk Faction

While anticipating Orochimaru's move against Konoha, Yan presents himself as a “chess player” rather than a pawn. Setsuna transfers Hawk Faction command to him, allowing Yan to direct its members during the Chunin Exam finals. 17 29 31

Konoha Crush and Political Expansion

During Orochimaru's attack, Yan leads the Hawk Faction, defeats Sunagakure ninja, limits Uchiha casualties, and uses the Dove Faction to aid wounded civilians. After Hiruzen's death, he dismisses the elders' posturing and pursues Orochimaru. 35 38

Capture of Orochimaru

Yan tracks Orochimaru, defeats him through genjutsu, and captures him alive. Rather than immediately surrendering him to Konoha's authorities, Yan imprisons him under Uchiha control to make the clan indispensable to the village. 40 41 42 43

Elimination of the Old Guard

Yan exploits the struggle between Danzo, Homura, and Koharu. He kills Danzo, uses a Shadow Clone to impersonate him, executes both advisers, and arranges evidence that publicly attributes their deaths—as well as Shisui and Itachi's deaths—to Danzo. 48 51 54

Rise of the Uchiha-Led Konoha

Following the purge, Yan presents himself as Konoha's acting highest authority and rallies civilians behind an Uchiha-led “new era.” He uses the deaths of the Anbu Fifth Division and allegedly Sunagakure evidence to mobilize Konoha for war. 56 57 58

Destruction of Sunagakure

Yan leads Konoha's elite ninja through the Death Desert in a surprise assault on Sunagakure. Using Mangekyō Sharingan, Susanoo, and the Totsuka Blade, he dismantles the village's defenses, defeats Shukaku, and oversees the aftermath after Sunagakure's fall. 60 61 65

Reconstruction and Consolidation

Yan uses Sunagakure's wealth and resources to compensate casualties, distribute advanced ninjutsu to civilian ninja, and fund Konoha's reconstruction. He directs the construction of a new commercial district, school, and hospital near the Uchiha compound, strengthening the clan's social and economic position. 65 67 71 72 96

Akatsuki Negotiations

As Fifth Hokage, Yan confronts Akatsuki and compels Nagato's organization to accept a Konoha-centered arrangement for missions, medical assistance, food access, and the Land of Rain's mineral resources. He also exposes his knowledge of Nagato's hidden true body and disparages the masked “Madara.” 79 80

Nine-Tails and Ryūchi Cave

Yan revives Namikaze Minato through Orochimaru's work, obtains the Yin Nine-Tails in exchange for reuniting Minato with Naruto, and seals Kurama within himself. He then enters Ryūchi Cave, forces the White Snake Sage to teach him senjutsu, contracts the Three Snake Princesses, and kills Manda. 89 90 91 93 94 95

Three Kage Summit

Yan attends the Land of Iron summit with Hyuga Hiashi and Uchiha Inabi. After the Fourth Raikage challenges Konoha's employment of rogue ninja, Yan enters Sage Mode, defeats and kills A and his guards, and forces Ōnoki and Mifune to provide reparations and chakra-conductive metal to Konoha. 97 98

Subjugation of Kumogakure

Following the Raikage's death, Yan drafts a harsh ten-year treaty requiring Kumogakure to accept responsibility for the conflict, pay reparations, reduce its military capacity, and submit to Konoha's terms under threat of invasion. 99

Trivia

  • Yan's system rewards are obtained by killing ninja, samurai, or summoning beasts. 1
  • He plants flowers over the dissolved remains of enemies, turning a Root operative's disposal site into a small garden. 1
  • His harsh patrol reputation stems from beating troublemakers with an iodine-dipped baton. 1
  • He deliberately changes his public conduct after Orochimaru's capture so villagers see him as a reformed, law-abiding Military Police officer rather than a gratuitously violent enforcer. 42
  • Yan considers Orochimaru an “experience farm” because Orochimaru's various resurrection methods potentially allow repeated Killing System rewards. 59
  • He learned the Reverse Summoning Technique after studying Orochimaru's scroll only briefly. 91
  • Yan's reconstruction policy is framed as a “three-win” arrangement: the Uchiha profit from construction, civilians receive storefronts, and Konoha earns interest. 96
