For a month, the time felt both agonizingly long and fleetingly short as the village prepared for an exam that would decide its fate.
On the surface, Konoha was peaceful, busily preparing for the upcoming Chunin Exams finals. Invitations were sent to the feudal lords and dignitaries of various nations, and the village was decked out in festive decorations, brimming with a holiday-like atmosphere. Yet, beneath this clamor and anticipation, cold undercurrents were surging.
Uchiha Ling's life seemed to have returned to a fixed rhythm. By day, he still appeared at the Ninja Academy as a special student, but the lessons were merely a formality to him. He spent more time utilizing the school's training grounds and archives to further solidify his foundation, researching more complex chakra forms and nature transformations—particularly the deepening of his Wind Release—as he attempted to integrate it more perfectly into his use of the Flying Thunder God.
Night, however, was when he truly became active. Through the Flying Thunder God, he traveled frequently between Konoha and Tanzaku Town.
Inside the Tanzaku Town stronghold, the atmosphere was solemn and tense.
"Have you confirmed it? The final deployment of Sunagakure and the Sound Ninja." Ling looked toward Uchiha Izumi, who was responsible for intelligence integration.
Izumi spread several maps marked with complex symbols across the table. "According to the intelligence gathered by Haku and Zabuza, it is basically confirmed. Sunagakure's elite troops will be mixed in with the spectators, commanded by Baki. The Sound Ninja are primarily lying in ambush at the edge of the Forest of Death and near several key barrier nodes of the village. Their signal for an all-out attack is expected the moment Gaara loses control and the One-Tail Shukaku appears."
Ling nodded, his gaze sweeping over the red dots on the map. "The Konoha Crush Plan... so it is coming after all. What are our countermeasures?"
Zabuza cradled the Executioner's Blade, baring his teeth in a grimace. "As you ordered, the Uchiha survivors have been divided into three groups. I will lead one to provide support on the perimeter, while the other two, led by Izumi and Haku, will infiltrate the spectator stands and the areas near the village's vital facilities. Once the chaos begins, they are to prioritize protecting non-combatants and sniping the infiltrating Sunagakure and Sound Ninja. As for that big guy (Shukaku)..." He glanced at Kimimaro.
Kimimaro replied calmly, "I will be responsible for pinning it down, creating an opportunity for Lord Ling."
Ling pondered for a moment. "Not enough. Shukaku's power is extraordinary; the risk is too high for you alone. Haku, your Ice Release has a miraculous effect in restricting large targets; you will assist Kimimaro. Remember, your mission is to delay and restrict, not to kill. The true core lies in Gaara himself, and... the caster hidden behind the scenes."
He looked at Izumi. "What about the movements of Root?"
Izumi's expression turned grave. "Danzo has been active frequently lately. The movements of the Root ninja under his command are abnormal, and he seems to be setting something up in secret. Our people discovered that they appear to be quietly reinforcing certain ancient barriers beneath the village, though their purpose is unclear. Additionally, there are signs indicating he may intend to take advantage of the chaos to strike at you, or at the Nine-Tails jinchuriki (Naruto)."
A cold light flashed in Ling's eyes. Danzo truly refused to give up; he wanted to profit from the chaos, perhaps even attempting to recreate the "Nine-Tails Incident" and frame Sunagakure or the Sound Ninja, only to emerge himself to clean up the mess and seize power.
"If he wants to touch Naruto, he'll have to answer to the kunai in my hand first," Ling's voice was icy. "Notify all 'Dawn Wind' members: once any unusual movement from Root is detected, especially if it targets Naruto or the Uchiha, there is no need to ask for instructions. You may decide for yourselves, and you are authorized to use any means necessary to strike back!"
"Understood!" the group replied in unison, their killing intent chilling.
Having arranged the external affairs, Ling turned his attention back to himself. His greatest gain this month was not the proficiency of his ninjutsu, but the improvement in his fusion with the Nine-Tails' chakra. Stimulated by his clashes with Orochimaru and Gaara, and combined with his day-and-night communication and synchronization, his fusion rate had quietly risen to 12%. This meant he could call upon this power more stably and for longer durations, and his Tailed Beast Cloak had become more solid.
At the same time, he had not relaxed his exploration of Uchiha power. Although his single-tomoe Sharingan had not evolved, his use of its perception, replication, and even genjutsu capabilities had become more subtle and precise.
That night, while Ling was training in his small courtyard, an unexpected visitor arrived quietly—it was Hatake Kakashi.
"Yo, Ling." Kakashi still wore that lazy look, but the one eye he revealed held a hint of scrutiny. "About that curse mark on Sasuke's neck..."
Ling understood immediately; he knew Kakashi had come for the "gift" left behind by Orochimaru. He did not hide anything, informing Kakashi of what he knew regarding the dangers of the curse mark and his suspicions that it was related to Orochimaru (while omitting the part about his own direct confrontation).
After listening, Kakashi's single eye turned sharp. "So it was him... It seems this Chunin Exam won't be very peaceful. Ling, you... seem to know a lot."
Ling met his gaze calmly. "I am simply better at observing and thinking than the average person, Mr. Kakashi. After all, like Naruto and Sasuke, I am someone who must struggle to survive in this whirlpool."
Kakashi looked at him deeply and did not press further, merely patting him on the shoulder. "Protect yourself and Naruto. The storm to come may be quite violent."
After seeing Kakashi off, Ling stood in the courtyard, looking up at the starry sky. He could feel that the air in Konoha seemed to have frozen, filled with the oppressive tension of a coming storm.
Orochimaru's fangs, Sunagakure's ambition, Danzo's conspiracy, and his own plans with "Dawn Wind"... everything would collide with a roar that afternoon, just a few days away!
The calm before this storm was about to be completely shattered.
