The antiseptic smell was so strong it stung the nose in Konoha Hospital's finest private room. Ling lay on the snow-white hospital bed, connected to several machines monitoring his vital signs. Their readouts flickered weakly but steadily. His face remained pale, his breaths shallow, as though they might stop at any moment. His wounds had been carefully treated and wrapped in bandages, making him look like a porcelain doll that had been shattered and clumsily pieced back together.
Naruto had dragged over a little stool and stubbornly kept watch by the bed, staring at Ling's face without blinking, afraid that if he looked away for even a moment, that faint breathing would stop. Tears still streaked the little boy's face, but something new had appeared in his eyes: a flame called responsibility, kindled by Tsunade's words, quietly beginning to burn.
Jiraiya leaned against the window with his arms crossed, his expression dark as he stared outside. Tsunade had been put in the room next door to rest. Her own injuries were serious, and she needed time to recover. The two Toad Sages, Fukasaku and Shima, had already returned to Mount Myoboku.
The hospital room door opened quietly, and Utatane Koharu and Mitokado Homura entered, followed by two guards. Seeing Ling's terrible condition, both advisers furrowed their brows.
"How is he?" Utatane Koharu asked the medic recording his readings.
"His vital signs are stable for now, but... his condition is very poor." The medic lowered their voice. "He has multiple comminuted fractures, severe internal injuries, and extensive damage to his chakra network. More troubling, his mind seems to have suffered a powerful shock and some kind of... erosion. It's a miracle he survived. As for when he'll wake up, or how well he'll recover... it's hard to say."
The two advisers fell silent for a moment. They had their misgivings about Ling's power and the Dawn Wind, but seeing him reduced to this state while rescuing his comrades and protecting the village's Jinchūriki stirred something in them.
"Thank you for your hard work. Do everything you can to treat him," Mitokado Homura told the medic.
Just then, the door opened again. This time, Shimura Danzō walked in. Leaning on his cane, he swept his one eye over Ling in the bed. His gaze held not a trace of emotion, as though he were looking at some inconsequential object.
"Danzō, what are you doing here?" Jiraiya immediately straightened and stepped in front of the bed, his tone hostile.
"I'm here to learn the facts, naturally." Danzō's voice was calm. "Uchiha Ling left the village without authorization, wielded the dangerous power of a Tailed Beast, and fought an unknown force, causing extensive damage. All of that demands a clear accounting. His Dawn Wind organization in particular must be thoroughly scrutinized for loyalty and potential danger at this sensitive time."
Every word out of his mouth was about "rules" and "danger," casting Ling's desperate rescue as a violation and a threat.
"An accounting?" Jiraiya was so angry he almost laughed. "If that kid hadn't fought like hell, Tsunade, the Nine-Tails Jinchuriki, and I would all be corpses right now! You want an accounting? Fine, I'll give you one. The people who attacked us were rogue ninja from Amegakure, calling themselves Akatsuki. Their leader has a terrifying dōjutsu we've never seen before, called the Rinnegan! There's your accounting! What you should be doing now is strengthening border security and investigating this organization, not standing here spouting nonsense over an unconscious kid!"
"The Rinnegan?" Danzō's one eye narrowed slightly, a flicker of surprise passing through it before his expression settled again. "Even so, merit is merit, and faults are faults. The rules cannot be discarded. Until he wakes, Dawn Wind must be fully investigated and supervised by Root, just in case."
That was his real goal. While Ling was unconscious, he meant to bring Dawn Wind entirely under his control—or... dismantle it.
"Don't you dare!" Naruto sprang up from his stool like an enraged little lion, spreading his arms to shield Ling's bed as he glared at Danzō. "You can't touch my big brother's people! They're good people! They saved the Pervy Sage and Granny Tsunade!"
Danzō didn't even look at Naruto. He kept his gaze on Jiraiya. "Jiraiya, you understand. You know what it means for Konoha to have an uncontrolled force operating outside the village's system, especially after Orochimaru and this latest attack."
Jiraiya clenched his fists until his knuckles turned white. He knew Danzō had a point. Konoha couldn't afford any more internal instability. But handing the comrades Ling had nearly died protecting over to Danzō for "investigation"? That was no different from pushing them into a pit of fire.
"Danzō." A weak but icy voice came from the doorway.
Everyone turned. Tsunade stood there, leaning on the doorframe. Her face was still pale, but fury burned in her golden eyes. "Cut the act. We'll deal with Dawn Wind after Ling wakes up. I'm in charge here now."
She walked into the room step by step. Her legs were unsteady, but the authority of one of the Sannin was unmistakable. She glanced at Ling on the bed, a complicated look flashing through her eyes, then turned to the two advisers. "Aunt Koharu, Uncle Homura, I believe our top priority right now is to stabilize the village, elect a new Hokage, and concentrate our forces against Akatsuki, the organization whose leader has the Rinnegan. We shouldn't be fighting among ourselves."
Her stance tipped the balance in an instant.
Utatane Koharu and Mitokado Homura exchanged a glance, each seeing the other's resolve. Tsunade's position mattered greatly, and she had identified the core issue at hand.
"Tsunade is right," Utatane Koharu said slowly. "Our immediate priority is to elect the Fifth Hokage and unite our strength. As for Uchiha Ling and Dawn Wind... given their contributions in this incident, we can postpone the investigation, but their movements must be restricted pending further action."
That effectively rejected Danzō's proposal to take over Dawn Wind immediately.
A cold glint flashed in Danzō's one eye. But knowing he couldn't get his way, he said nothing more. He gave the unconscious Ling a long look, glanced at Tsunade and Jiraiya, then snorted and turned to leave.
Watching him go, Jiraiya and Tsunade both breathed a sigh of relief, though their hearts remained heavy. Danzō wouldn't let this go.
"You two," Tsunade said to Jiraiya and Naruto in a tone that brooked no argument, "go get some rest! Especially you, Jiraiya. Your injuries aren't fully healed, so stop standing around here! Naruto, your brother needs quiet!"
Naruto looked ready to protest, but Jiraiya grabbed him by the collar.
"Come on, kid. Let your brother get some rest." Jiraiya sighed and dragged the reluctant Naruto out of the room.
At last, the hospital room fell quiet, leaving only the steady beeping of the machines.
Tsunade walked to the bed and gazed at Ling's pale, peaceful face. She reached out and rested her hand gently on his wrist, sending pure chakra into him like a warm spring, slowly nourishing his battered body.
"You troublesome brat..." she muttered, though it was hard to tell who she was scolding. "All you ever do is cause trouble."
But her hand moved with the utmost gentleness.
Outside, dusk fell over Konoha. The evening sun streamed through the window and fell across Ling's bloodless face, as though trying to lend him a little warmth.
With Tsunade's return and Ling's grave injuries, Konoha's power struggle entered a new phase. Danzō's ambitions had been temporarily checked, but they were far from over. The organization called Akatsuki and its mysterious Rinnegan hung over them like a Sword of Damocles, reminding everyone that the external threat had never disappeared.
