Background

Tsunade is the granddaughter of the First Hokage, Senju Hashirama, and the granddaughter of Uzumaki Mito. By the time Kushina arrives in Konoha, she is twenty years old, a Konoha jonin, and Hiruzen Sarutobi’s disciple 1 2.

She lives with Senju Genma in a cottage assigned by Mito and helps raise and train Uzumaki Kushina after Mito entrusts the child to them. Though Genma frequently provokes her, Tsunade consistently worries about his safety and reprimands him when he takes reckless risks 2 6 7.

When war begins, Tsunade leads a medical-ninja unit to the front. She accepts the deployment as her responsibility despite disliking war, and later agrees to let Genma remain near the medical unit after he asks to stay beside her 14 21. She fights alongside Jiraiya and Orochimaru against Hanzō during the decisive battle in the Land of Rain 26.

Following Mito’s declining health, Tsunade wishes to delay Kushina’s Nine-Tails transfer so she can spend more time with her grandmother. Mito nevertheless dies after the successful sealing, leaving Tsunade grieving her loss 31 34.

During the Land of River conflict, Tsunade serves as Konoha’s logistics chief and develops antidotes against the Hidden Sand’s poisons. She openly condemns Danzō for sacrificing Konoha ninja through reckless command decisions 38 42. After the war, she accepts Shizune as her medical-ninjutsu disciple at Genma’s request 52.

Tsunade later supports Genma during the Fourth Hokage election and gives birth to their daughter, Uzuki 134 142.
