Background / History
Madara fought his way upward from childhood during the Sengoku era. Alongside Senju Hashirama, he became one of the era’s dominant shinobi. Chiyo remembers him single-handedly overwhelming the other four villages’ Kage and describes his strength as a foundation of Leaf’s early peace. He later left Leaf even though doing so meant abandoning his clan 5 168 202 216.
His younger brother, Izuna, died to Tobirama Senju’s Flying Thunder God Technique. The loss helped lead to Madara’s Eternal Mangekyou Sharingan and left him with a hatred of Tobirama that persisted through death and resurrection 225.
Near death from old age, Madara saved Obito during the Third Shinobi World War because he needed a pawn. He arranged for Obito to impersonate him and continue the work needed for his eventual resurrection. His manipulation included planting curse seals in Obito’s and Nohara Rin’s hearts and staging the circumstances behind Obito’s despair 109 211.
Madara believed Black Zetsu was an embodiment of his own will. In reality, Zetsu had targeted him since his Mangekyou awakening and altered the Uchiha Stone Tablet to redirect his pursuit of peace toward the Infinite Tsukuyomi. Madara’s development was intended to produce a suitable vessel for Kaguya’s resurrection 205 229.
Appearance
Madara emerges from his coffin wearing red armor; his revived body initially has hollow eye sockets before he implants Obito’s eyes 215.
- Sage form: His body and hair turn pure white, and he gains a black-and-white robe and an armor-like forehead protector with a small horn 219.
- Truth-Seeking Orbs: Nine orbs appear behind him after Ten-Tails absorption 219.
- Third eye: A scarlet Nine-Tomoe Rinnegan opens in his forehead after his evolution 223.
- After extraction: His face is pale, his gaze grows dim, and his eyes have reverted to ordinary Three-Tomoe Sharingan 253.
Personality
Madara is domineering, proud, and intensely drawn to combat. He initially dismisses Gray as a “grain of sand,” but recognizes his taijutsu and eventually acknowledges his extraordinary strength. His enthusiasm for fighting does not prevent him from attacking Gray during an unfinished evolution: achieving peace matters more to him than waiting for an ideal duel 124 216 224.
His methods are ruthless, particularly toward people he considers expendable. He saves and manipulates Obito, then dismisses him as a pawn after resurrection. Nevertheless, Gray recognizes that Madara’s underlying goal resembles Hashirama’s: peace, pursued through a radically different method 109 215 229.
Madara fiercely rejects anyone else’s claim over his fate. Learning that Black Zetsu manipulated his life shatters his confidence and turns his anger against Zetsu. Even while Kaguya takes over his body, he resists and takes satisfaction in having killed her son 229 232.
Abilities & Skills
Taijutsu and Combat Speed
Madara’s physical combat ability is formidable even without relying on Susanoo 216.
- His ordinary movement outpaces the Body Flicker Technique and rivals the Raikage’s Lightning Release Chakra Mode 216.
- After resurrection, Mei Terumi cannot follow his movements clearly 215.
- In Sage form, he counters Tobirama’s Flying Thunder God assault and pins him to the ground 225.
- Gray nevertheless surpasses his speed so completely that Madara cannot track his movements 229.
Sharingan and Susanoo
Madara develops the Sharingan through its successive forms before awakening the Rinnegan 168.
- Zetsu recalls his Eternal Mangekyou-era Susanoo as approximately 130 meters tall 110.
- His Susanoo remains a benchmark for overwhelming power, provoking Ōnoki’s memories of an earlier encounter 96.
- His ocular power ultimately regresses to Three-Tomoe Sharingan after he loses the Ten-Tails 253.
Rinnegan
His restored Rinnegan provide powerful offensive, defensive, and restraining techniques 218 224 226 227.
- Chakra absorption: Nullifies Minato’s Rasengan and renders the former Hokages’ chakra-based attacks ineffective 226.
- Shinra Tensei: Used against the defenders protecting Gray during his evolution 224.
- Limbo: Border Jail: Defeats Hashirama and is later directed against Black Zetsu 227 231.
- His initial revived state lacks his second Rinnegan and falls short of his peak power 216.
Ten-Tails Power and Regeneration
Absorbing the Ten-Tails transforms Madara into a Sage with a vast chakra supply and power beyond ordinary humans 219.
- His chakra pressure prevents some nearby shinobi from moving 219.
- Nine Truth-Seeking Orbs provide attacks capable of destroying an ordinary victim’s body and soul on contact 219.
- He regenerates within seconds after Gray cuts him in half at the waist 220 221.
- Gray identifies the initial transformation as unstable and potentially reversible after a severe injury or accident 219.
Sage Arts and Yin-Yang Release
- Sage Art: Yin Release Lightning Dispatch: Used against Gray and later prepared against Tsunade 219 224.
- Sage Art: Storm Release Light Fang: Used to kill Black Zetsu 232.
- Yin-Yang Release rods: Restrain Tobirama; Madara intends to torment and destroy his soul 226.
Infinite Tsukuyomi
Madara intends to impose peace by placing everyone in a dream world where their wishes can be fulfilled 227.
- The Nine-Tomoe Rinnegan gained through God Tree absorption enables the technique 223 229.
- He immobilizes the assembled ninja and draws upon their chakra as the God Tree blooms 228.
- Gray extracts roughly three-tenths of the tailed beasts’ power from him and uses it to release the genjutsu 229.
- The power is tied to Kaguya’s awakening rather than a complete attainment of Kekkei Mōra by Madara himself 229.
Planning and Manipulation
- Arranges for Obito to use his identity and prepare his resurrection 109.
- Uses curse seals and staged events to control Obito’s direction 211.
- His own plan is compromised by Black Zetsu’s falsification of the Uchiha Stone Tablet 229.

- Obito’s Mangekyou Sharingan and Rinnegan — Taken and implanted immediately after resurrection; Madara subsequently retrieves the second Rinnegan 215 218.
Relationships
- Izuna Uchiha — Younger brother. Izuna’s death contributes to Madara’s Eternal Mangekyou awakening and enduring hatred of Tobirama 225 229.
- Senju Hashirama — Long-standing rival who shares his desire for peace but rejects his methods. Madara defeats him with Limbo when Hashirama tries to intervene 124 227 229.
- Senju Tobirama — Hated enemy responsible for Izuna’s death. Madara seeks revenge against his soul after resurrection 225 226.
- Uchiha Obito — Rescued subordinate, impersonator, and resurrection pawn. Madara takes his eyes and violently discards him once revived 109 215.
- Black Zetsu — Supposed embodiment of Madara’s will, actually Kaguya’s agent. Madara kills him after discovering the deception 229 232.
- Kaguya Otsutsuki — The hidden beneficiary of his power progression. Her consciousness awakens inside him after God Tree absorption and takes over his body 229 232.
- Uchiha Gray — Uchiha descendant and principal opponent. Madara moves from contempt to acknowledgment, but Gray consistently surpasses him and exposes his manipulation 216 224 229 253.
- Tsunade — Hashirama’s descendant and Gray’s defender. Madara attacks her during Gray’s evolution, prompting Gray’s later declaration that Madara must die 224 253.

Trivia
- The masked “Madara” is Obito. His battles, Kamui use, and Akatsuki activities before the actual resurrection must not be confused with Madara’s personal actions 108 109 215.
- Villagers believe Madara died at the Valley of the End, although Gray explains that he survived long enough to save and manipulate Obito 109 202.
- Kaguya’s emergence does not mark his final confirmed death: Madara is later extracted alive 232 253.
