Background / History

Zetsu operates alongside Uchiha Obito within Akatsuki, working to gather the Nine-Tailed Beasts, complete the Ten-Tails, and cast the Infinite Tsukuyomi. Though he presents himself as Uchiha Madara's will, his actual purpose is the resurrection of Kaguya Ōtsutsuki. He has spent thousands of years cultivating Rinnegan bearers and manipulating events toward that goal. 102 201 229

Uchiha Gray identifies Zetsu as a potential danger early on, believing Black Zetsu possesses a hidden, limited-use Kekkei Mōra power capable of killing even an exceptionally strong opponent through a surprise attack. Gray therefore avoids prematurely confronting the Rinnegan-related plans Zetsu is monitoring. 62

As Gray's strength rapidly grows, Zetsu becomes increasingly alarmed. After learning that Gray alone defeated the forces of Cloud Hidden and Earth Hidden without Konoha's ninja participating, he regards Gray as a variable threatening the plan and urges Obito to accelerate their operations. 110 128

During Gray's battle with Nagato, Zetsu considers using the portion of power Kaguya gave him to assassinate Gray. He ultimately preserves it, judging that it can only be used once and must be saved for the final stage of the plan. Obito criticizes Zetsu for becoming unusually impulsive and chooses to delay their attack until the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path has consumed all Nine-Tailed Beasts. 170

Zetsu is shocked by Gray's expanding Susanoo and rejects Obito's suspicion that Gray has attained Kekkei Tōta, insisting that such power requires merging with the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path. 192 After Obito destroys the spatial passage between Earth and the moon, Zetsu briefly believes Gray can no longer return, relieving the pressure Gray has placed on him. 201

Gray eventually exposes Zetsu's true identity, leaving him terrified that Kaguya's resurrection may be thwarted. Zetsu attempts to kill Gray, but Obito—while near death—uses his own willpower to restrain him. Zetsu detaches from Obito, fuses with a White Zetsu, and escapes underground. 221 222

After Madara confronts him over the manipulation of his life, Zetsu admits his role before Madara kills him with Sage Art: Storm Release Light Fang. He survives the attack through Yomotsu Hirasaka, but Gray immediately pursues him and destroys him with a golden Light Weapon strengthened by senjutsu. 232 233

Appearance

Zetsu possesses a bizarre half-black, half-white body. His eyes are described as flickering with seven-colored light. 170

Despite his long-term caution, Gray's growth makes him fearful and increasingly impulsive. He repeatedly questions Obito's judgment, worries that Gray will dismantle the plan, and seeks opportunities to eliminate him before Kaguya can be resurrected. 170 201 213 221
