Itachi applies for early graduation alongside Uchiha Gray and quickly recognizes that Gray had concealed his real ability. Their rivalry is initially driven by Itachi's pride as a gifted child, though he remains curious about Gray's motives 9.

During the battle examination, he defeats Akano Ryofu through shuriken tactics and precise prediction. He allows Ryofu to commit to a punch, then positions a shuriken near his opponent's head—demonstrating that Ryofu would have died in a real fight 10.

He later duels Gray with redirected shuriken and the Fire Style: Great Fireball Technique. Gray's vastly greater speed and chakra overwhelm him, but Gray also saves Itachi from his own massive fireball, changing Itachi's view of him from rival to someone worthy of trust 12 13.

Alliance with Gray and Shisui

Itachi comes to believe that Gray shares his wish for peace and opposition to the Uchiha Clan's radical faction. Though Gray intended this image to deceive Hiruzen's surveillance, Itachi and Shisui interpret his actions as evidence of exceptional compassion and foresight 10 14 17.

When Shisui is targeted by Danzō, Itachi accompanies Gray to find him. Gray's intervention allows Itachi to awaken the Mangekyō Sharingan and prevents Shisui's planned death from becoming permanent 49 50.
