Background

Rocks Pirates

Kaido was an officer of the Rocks Pirates and was regarded as the crew’s newest officer; later accounts also describe him as an apprentice during that period. He had already amassed a bounty exceeding 100 million Beli. 271 272

On Beehive Island, Kaido challenged Hua Yue after the latter demanded a stolen pocket watch. Hua Yue trapped him in an illusion-like world where time, space, and mass were defined at will, causing Kaido to collapse without being physically struck. This defeat remained a lasting humiliation and later motivated Kaido to devise a way around Hua Yue’s gaze-based ability. 271 322

At God Valley, Charlotte Linlin gave Kaido the Fish-Fish Fruit, Mythical Zoan: Azure Dragon form. The new power ignited his ambition to surpass Hua Yue and become the strongest. 284

Rule of the Land of Wa

Conflict with Uchiha Hanazuki

More than a decade after their first encounter, Kaido confronted Uchiha Hanazuki at Onigashima. He declared that he was no longer the rookie Hua Yue had incapacitated with a glance and fought with his Azure Dragon and hybrid forms. 319

Hanazuki used Kaido and his officers as test subjects against ability-user Hollows. Kaido destroyed large numbers of them, but their regeneration and adaptation forced him to target Hanazuki directly. His Flaming Dragon Bagua was powerful enough to devastate Onigashima and melt the terrain into magma, but it also injured King and Queen through Hanazuki’s manipulation. 322 323

Kaido was ultimately stopped when Citus—identified as a Stussy clone—halted his kanabo with one finger and defeated him. The people of the Flower Capital captured him using Seastone, and he later awoke from a coma with a scar across his left horn. 323 326

Following his defeat, Kaido became determined to build an army of Devil Fruit users capable of rivaling Hanazuki’s forces. He pressured Queen to research Lineage Factor applications, accelerated weapons-factory construction, and pursued artificial Devil Fruit production. 326 356
