Background / History

Anko attended the Konoha Ninja Academy alongside Uchiha Hanazuki and Uzuki Yugao. Before graduation, she regularly tried to draw the lazy Hanazuki away from class with invitations to visit dango shops. She was alarmed when Orochimaru used snakes to menace the students during their bell test and apologized for Hanazuki's behavior to their new instructor. 1

She graduated with Hanazuki and Yugao as war preparations began. On her first battlefield deployment, the Fourth Raikage targeted her; the attack left her legs weak and caused her to collapse before Hanazuki intercepted it. After Hanazuki's later escape from the Raikage and Killer Bee, she carried him on her back despite calling him a show-off. 2 5 6

Orochimaru formally accepted Anko as his disciple shortly after taking Hanazuki as a student. Anko was loyal to Orochimaru but feared his anger, and she struggled to follow the political discussions between him and Hanazuki. As the war continued, Anko remained close to Hanazuki. She visited his home, tested his newly developed Blut Vene defense, and unsuccessfully tried to make him understand her feelings. After consuming liqueur chocolate at Hanazuki's home, Anko lost her memory of the night and woke beside him the following morning. Embarrassed but resolute, she declared that she would take responsibility and claimed Hanazuki as her man. 50

Following the Third Shinobi World War, Anko boasted to Kurenai and Yugao that she held an advantage in her relationship with Hanazuki. However, her embarrassment over the liqueur-chocolate incident prevented her from explaining what had happened. 58

When Orochimaru prepared to abandon Konoha, he attempted to leave Anko with a parting “gift”: an unstable three-tomoe curse mark intended to open the Sage Lock. Although the experiment had only a one-in-ten chance of survival, Anko endured the mark's pain and corruption. Hanazuki subsequently stabilized the curse mark by assimilating it into her Blut Vene, greatly improving her defense and chakra while removing its debilitating pain. This event shattered her remaining trust in Orochimaru. 74

By the time of the Chunin Exams, Anko had become a Konoha proctor and oversaw the Forest of Death's second examination.
