Appearance

Sengoku is a Marine officer with an afro beneath his cap and a braided beard. In battle, he can enlarge himself into a towering golden Buddha-like form. 282 302

  • Wears the Marine cloak representing justice while acting as Fleet Admiral. 302
  • His Great Buddha transformation makes him several times taller than an ordinary person and radiates golden light. 282
  • Keeps a goat in his Fleet Admiral's office. 391

Personality

Sengoku is a meticulous commander burdened by the instability of the pirate era, the conduct of the World Government, and the safety of ordinary civilians. He repeatedly seeks large-scale solutions—Buster Calls, worldwide recruitment, special forces, and war preparations—when the Marines face threats beyond their existing strength. 333 462 463 500

His commitment to justice is pragmatic and conflicted. He obeys orders from the Five Elders even when they require extreme measures, including targeting civilians during the Totto Land operation, but he also protects Zephyr from CP0 scrutiny and openly resists demands for an arrest warrant against him. 341 391

Sengoku is deeply wary of Uchiha Hanazuki, regarding not only his strength but also the unknown elements surrounding him as a strategic threat. His experience at God Valley and later defeats at Koldberg leave him convinced that Hanazuki cannot be approached like an ordinary pirate. 285 304 341

Background / History

During the God Valley incident, Sengoku served as a Marine Admiral. He ordered Marine forces to rescue every Celestial Dragon and Knight of God they could find while warning them to flee from Rocks Pirates officers rather than engage them directly. 282

Sengoku witnessed Uchiha Hanazuki kill Rocks D. Xebec with a single strike after the latter had already fought multiple powerful opponents. He became enraged when Hanazuki used God Valley's casualties as nourishment for a gigantic tree, then attempted to attack him in Great Buddha form. Hanazuki avoided the attack and extracted Sengoku's blood, identifying his Mythical Zoan's Lineage Factor as valuable. 285

By Gol D. Roger's execution, Sengoku had become Fleet Admiral. Roger's declaration about Laugh Tale convinced him that the pirate era would become uncontrollable, a concern later reinforced by the rise of the Four Emperors, Seven Warlords, and successive pirate threats. 301 302 391

At Koldberg, Sengoku led fifty Marine warships against Douglas Bullet and authorized a Buster Call. Hua Yue defeated Bullet before destroying the Marine fleet with Golden Wheel Reincarnation Explosion, leaving Sengoku severely wounded; Hua Yue then extracted additional blood from him for the Buddha Fruit's Lineage Factor. 303 304

Relationships

  • Monkey D. Garp — Longtime Marine comrade and frequent source of frustration. Sengoku relies on Garp's strength in crises but clashes with him over Ace, Dragon, and Luffy. 303 414 415 489
  • Uchiha Hanazuki / Hua Yue — Primary adversary. Sengoku witnessed his actions at God Valley, was defeated and harvested for Lineage Factor at Koldberg, and later mobilized a Buster Call against him at Totto Land. 285 304 333
  • Zephyr — Fellow senior Marine and former Admiral. Sengoku trusts Zephyr enough to shield him from CP0, though they disagree over investigating World Government secrets. 355 391
  • Donquixote Rosinante — Adopted son and Marine subordinate. Sengoku trained Rosinante and sought to imprison Doflamingo after Rosinante's death. 328 361
  • Donquixote Doflamingo — Rosinante's killer and a recurring criminal concern. Sengoku attempts to prosecute him while struggling with Doflamingo's former Celestial Dragon status. 361 414
  • The Five Elders — Political superiors whose orders Sengoku must carry out, despite his unease over their secrecy and their treatment of civilian lives. 334 391
  • Gol D. Roger — Pirate rival who temporarily fought alongside Sengoku during God Valley. Roger later teased Sengoku as “Resourceful General,” while Sengoku still threatened to arrest him. 285
