Background / History

Senju Hashirama succeeded Senju Butsuma as the Senju Clan Leader after Butsuma and Uchiha Tajima killed one another in battle. His accession placed him opposite the newly appointed Uchiha leader, Uchiha Madara, in the continuing clan conflict. 8

Before becoming clan leader, Hashirama had formed a significant bond with Madara. Madara reacts strongly whenever Hashirama is mentioned, while Hashirama’s letters repeatedly seek cooperation and an end to the chaotic era. 6 17 18

When Uchiha Madara’s clan captured Hashirama’s fiancée, Uzumaki Mito, Hashirama chose negotiation over retaliation. He personally wrote to Madara seeking cooperation and later agreed to send grain to the Uchiha despite Tobirama’s objections. 17 18

Hashirama later restrained the Nine-Tails after its escape, then accepted Madara’s proposal that the winner of their duel would claim the beast. Although he unveiled formidable Wood Release techniques, the Nine-Tails ultimately came under Uchiha Yang’s control rather than Senju possession. 30 31 32 33

After Senju Tobirama’s failed ambush on Uchiha Yang, Hashirama’s hoped-for alliance with Madara deteriorated further. The Senju Clan subsequently suffered military and political setbacks as outside clans attacked its territory. 37 41

During the conflict with the Southwest Alliance, Hashirama personally confronted Sarutobi Sasuke and Shimura Takeo. Rather than pursue their destruction, he offered peace and persuaded them to retreat through his vision of a village where clans could coexist. 45

Hashirama began reorganizing the Senju Clan around this vision, using both his charisma and Wood Release to secure support. He and Tobirama ultimately agreed to work toward building a multi-clan village, despite Tobirama’s continued distrust of the Uchiha. 47 48

Personality

Hashirama is an idealist committed to ending the cycle of clan warfare. He wants children to grow up without being sent to battle, and imagines a village in which people of different clans can live as friends rather than inherit hatred. 45

His compassion extends beyond his own clan. When Senju officials suggested killing civilians in devastated towns to avoid compensation and responsibility, Hashirama rebuked them and ordered personnel left behind to help survivors rebuild. 43

Although often gentle and conciliatory, Hashirama can assert his authority decisively. He invokes his position as clan leader to enforce humanitarian orders when his subordinates resist. 43

Hashirama remains determined even when his ideals cost the Senju Clan land, resources, and political leverage. He spares Kaguya Haruo and cedes the Bloodline Grass mountain range to the Kaguya Clan in pursuit of peace. 46
