Background / History

Asuma was placed on Team 8 with Hyuga Xuanye and Yūhi Kurenai after graduating from the Ninja Academy. He already knew that their supervising jōnin would be Shimura Hofu because the team list had been prepared by his father. During introductions, he named shogi and training as his hobbies and stated that his ambition was to surpass the elder in his family. 1 3

Under Hofu, Asuma helped form the team through a practical assessment. He fought with trench knives and coordinated with Xuanye and Kurenai, but Hofu easily overwhelmed all three despite restricting himself to Chūnin-level strength. 4

Team 8's first mission was a B-rank operation against the rogue Konoha shinobi Luren Murata. Asuma proposed drawing Murata out with traps rather than risking an attack around the children in Murata's care. During the battle, he used Fire Style to block Murata's escape and later assisted in disposing of Murata's body after the rogue died. 5 6 7

After becoming Chūnin, Asuma received poison sacs from Hofu as both a congratulatory gift and a parting gift before their instructor departed for the front lines. 18

Asuma is depicted as a child with an unusually mature, “melancholic middle-aged man” air. He often keeps his hands in his pockets and is later frequently seen with a toothpick or twig in his mouth. 3 9

Personality

He admires powerful, unconventional heroes, initially holding Jiraiya in high regard before becoming disillusioned after learning of Jiraiya's behavior around hot springs. 9 He is also blunt and easily irritated by Xuanye and Kurenai's closeness, though his complaints are generally playful rather than hostile. 5 9 15
