Jiraiya is a renowned Konoha ninja counted among the Legendary Sannin. By the time Team 8 is assigned to escort him, he has completed more than one hundred S-rank missions and is considered powerful enough that even Sarutobi Hiruzen may not match him. Despite this reputation, he specifically requests three newly graduated genin—Genye, Asuma, and Kurenai—as escorts simply because traveling alone is boring and he wants company. 9

During the trip to the Land of Hot Water, Jiraiya questions Genye about what he would do with the power to change the world. Genye's answer—ending war before living peacefully with a family—inspires Jiraiya's writing. Jiraiya privately considers whether Genye could be the Child of Prophecy, though he initially judges the boy as unremarkable compared with Nagato. 9
