Background / History

Academy Years and the White Fang's Death

Kakashi is already considered a genius at the Ninja Academy when Kiyoshi joins his class. After Kiyoshi defeats Obito in a spar, Kakashi begins considering him a possible early graduate and mission partner 4 16.

His father, the Konoha White Fang, is condemned for abandoning a mission to save comrades and subsequently takes his own life. Kakashi responds by distancing himself from friends and embracing the belief that missions must come before everything else. He applies for early graduation and passes 32 34 35.

This outlook makes him difficult to work with. Nobuo Sakai and Toshiya Mizuno report that he abandoned injured comrades to continue a mission whose difficulty had risen from C-rank to B-rank. After repeated conflicts across teams, Hiruzen assigns Kakashi to Minato Namikaze alongside Rin Nohara and Obito Uchiha 58 65.

Chidori Research and Kannabi Bridge

Kakashi becomes absorbed in developing Chidori, increasingly neglecting his swordsmanship. During a rooftop spar, Kiyoshi defeats him and reminds him of his father's teachings. Kakashi subsequently resumes training both Lightning Release and swordsmanship 28 114 115.

After becoming a Jonin, he participates in the mission toward Hidden Stone. His premature use of Chidori leaves him vulnerable to Maziru, forcing Kiyoshi to intervene. Minato stresses the need for better control and teamwork 211 213.

Parallel-World Team Seven

In the parallel world's Konoha Year 62, Kakashi encounters Naruko Uzumaki, Sasuke Uchiha, and Sakura Haruno, who mistake him for their own teacher. He conducts a three-bell exercise and begins teaching Sasuke Purple Lightning, emphasizing prediction and emotional control rather than dependence on the Sharingan 549.

Naruko's treatment particularly troubles him. After discovering her loneliness, expired food, and poor living conditions despite being the Fourth Hokage's daughter, he decides to teach her the Rasengan 549.

Obito's apparent death deepens his guilt and isolation, but also makes him reconsider his father's decision to save comrades. His determination to honor Obito's request coexists with emotional withdrawal, secrecy about Anbu missions, and an increasingly violent reputation that worries Rin 218 219 231.

His later mentorship is more attentive. In the parallel world, he treats Sasuke's hatred as an obstacle to learning and responds to Naruko's neglect with practical support.
