Background / History

Following the Second Shinobi World War, Tsunade lost both her younger brother, Nawaki, and the man she loved, Dan Katō. Dan's death left her with hemophobia, seriously impairing her ability to treat patients and contributing to her withdrawal into drinking and gambling. She took responsibility for Dan's niece, Shizune, and kept her close thereafter 2 131.

Despite her reluctance to return to active duty, Hiruzen Sarutobi selected Tsunade to represent Konoha in its alliance mission to Sunagakure. She accepted the assignment and led Kiyoshi Uchiha, Asuma Sarutobi, and Kurenai Yuhi, testing Kiyoshi's medical ability and chakra control along the way 131 132 133.

Tsunade gradually recognized Kiyoshi's unusual medical talent. After he requested to become her disciple, she agreed to teach him the Yin Seal on the condition that he help train Shizune in practical medical ninjutsu. She subsequently acknowledged him as her newly accepted disciple and escorted him to Shikkotsu Forest for Sage Arts training 274 281 296.

During the conflict in the Land of Rain, Tsunade abandoned a diplomatic signing ceremony to investigate Konoha's connection to Hanzo and Danzo and to find Kiyoshi. She fought alongside Katsuyu amid the ensuing battle and later supported Kiyoshi's proposal that Akatsuki take over the Land of Rain 283 284 285.

Tsunade's relationship with Kiyoshi developed beyond mentorship. He gave her a chakra-infused ring intended to slow her aging, and she later accepted her pregnancy and agreed to stop drinking and gambling for the child. Their daughter is identified as Chizuko 431 472 551.

Personality

Tsunade is blunt and impatient, particularly when forced into duties she does not want. Her first interaction with Kiyoshi is marked by impatience, and she initially treats the Sunagakure assignment as an unwanted burden 2 131.

Her alcoholism and gambling are coping mechanisms rooted in wartime loss rather than a lack of ability. Even while avoiding clinical work because of hemophobia, she remains deeply knowledgeable about medicine and continues to respond when Konoha or her companions need her 131 132 235.

She is fiercely protective of Shizune. Her condition for accepting Kiyoshi as a disciple was primarily meant to secure Shizune practical training and a future independent of Tsunade's own limitations 274.
